I found these two outlines of the rescue plan for the guys in the mine in chile

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38807555/ns/world_news-americas

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/interactive/2010/aug/23/chile-san-jose-mine-trapped-miners

Both diagrams show a collapse half way down the main circular tunnel but i'm wondering why they are building a 700 meter long lifeline tunnel when it might be an option to go down the existing tunnel and start digging a by-pass tunnel from the face of the collapse to the next level of open tunnel below. I appreciate the newspapers don't have the geology reports of the actual mine, and the scale of the collapse could be larger than shown but wouldn't digging out the existing collapse from a lower position still be an option?
