Making the tea, do you add the milk after the bag is removed or while the bag is still in the cup.

I do it while the bag is still in the cup, so I know how strong the tea will be. Sometimes I have forgotten to take the bag out doing it this way..

The bag stays in the cup untill the tea is drank.

I'll only add milk after i take out the teabag.
Used to work with a lad who did the opposite,it used to put me off my tea for some reason..

+1 for this. My work mates say it looks like there is a dead mouse floating in my brew.

Its simple - teabag into mug, hot water, stir, remove bag, add milk
    :D
leaving the teabag in, although adding flavour, looks horrible and puts me off my tea :|

I don't get it, It's all the same. I can tell my the Colour mix when it's strong enough. I got sick of having weak tea doing it the other way.

Read George Orwells Essay on a "Nice Cup of Tea"

    http://www.netcharles.com/orwell/essays/nicecupoftea.htm

by putting the tea in first and stirring as one pours, one can exactly regulate the amount of milk whereas one is liable to put in too much milk if one does it the other way round.

Obviously bag out before the milk. Tut tut, no manners the lot of you...

Fifthly, the tea should be put straight into the pot. No strainers, muslin bags or other devices to imprison the tea.

    'Imprisoned tea' :D

so which goes in the cup first? milk or tea?

Or do you just drink it straight from the pot?

Tea you fool. Then add sugar while the water is a max temperature. And finially add a drop of milk.

Whatever about the before-or-after debate, I think we can all agree that sugar in tea is plain wrong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭Precious flower

Ewwwwwwwwww why would you leave the teabag in the cup when pouring the milk??!! It's wrong I tell you, WRONG!:p The teabag is always taken out before I add the milk!! And if I have sugar (which isn't too often) it's added before the milk because then it dissolves fully and tastes far better that way!

This might freak some people out but its how I does it y'all! I get my cup, put milk in first, then I put sugar in and stir, then I put the tea bag into the sugar milk and stir till dark and then I add the boiling water and remove the tea bag at the end, stir and enjoy my homies!

    Its a simple process:

Scald the pot if more than two people are having tea or each cup if less than two people
Insert Tea bags (Tea leaves are better but we won't argue that point)
    Reboil the kettle
    Pour in Boiling water.
    Stir the Tea.
    Remove Tea bag from cup.
    Add Milk.

At no point should sugar come into the equation unless by means of a nice biscuit.
Dunking isn't allowed for fear of a soggy biscuit in the cup!!!

You must not put cold milk in first.

Black tea brews properly within a very narrow range, close to boiling point.

This is why tea at high altitude tastes rotten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,112 ✭✭✭Dacelonid

Personally I couldn't care less what order things are added to the cup, it all tastes the same. My mam on the other hand has a cardiac if she sees me making her in anything other than the prescribed order (sugar, milk, teabag, water). She claims it tastes different, but yet she can't tell the difference if she can't see me make it.

I prefer Douglas Adams' "reflection" on tea-making:
One or two Americans have asked me why it is that the English like tea so much, which never seems to them to be a very good drink. To understand, you have to know how to make it properly.

There is a very simple principle to the making of tea and it's this - to get the proper flavour of tea, the water has to be boiling (not boiled) when it hits the tea leaves. If it's merely hot then the tea will be insipid. That's why we English have these odd rituals, such as warming the teapot first (so as not to cause the boiling water to cool down too fast as it hits the pot). And that's why the American habit of bringing a teacup, a tea bag and a pot of hot water to the table is merely the perfect way of making a thin, pale, watery cup of tea that nobody in their right mind would want to drink. The Americans are all mystified about why the English make such a big thing out of tea because most Americans have never had a good cup of tea. That's why they don't understand. In fact the truth of the matter is that most English people don't know how to make tea any more either, and most people drink cheap instant coffee instead, which is a pity, and gives Americans the impression that the English are just generally clueless about hot stimulants.

So the best advice I can give to an American arriving in England is this. Go to Marks and Spencer and buy a packet of Earl Grey tea. Go back to where you're staying and boil a kettle of water. While it is coming to the boil, open the sealed packet and sniff. Careful - you may feel a bit dizzy, but this is in fact perfectly legal. When the kettle has boiled, pour a little of it into a tea pot, swirl it around and tip it out again. Put a couple (or three, depending on the size of the pot) of tea bags into the pot (If I was really trying to lead you into the paths of righteousness I would tell you to use free leaves rather than bags, but let's just take this in easy stages). Bring the kettle back up to the boil, and then pour the boiling water as quickly as you can into the pot. Let it stand for two or three minutes, and then pour it into a cup. Some people will tell you that you shouldn't have milk with Earl Grey, just a slice of lemon. Screw them. I like it with milk. If you think you will like it with milk then it's probably best to put some milk into the bottom of the cup before you pour in the tea*. If you pour milk into a cup of hot tea you will scald the milk. If you think you will prefer it with a slice of lemon then, well, add a slice of lemon.

Drink it. After a few moments you will begin to think that the place you've come to isn't maybe quite so strange and crazy after all.

*This is socially incorrect. The socially correct way of pouring tea is to put the milk in after the tea. Social correctness has traditionally had nothing whatever to do with reason, logic or physics. In fact, in England it is generally considered socially incorrect to know stuff or think about things. It's worth bearing this in mind when visiting.

    I thought it was common knowledge how to make a cup of tea, but obviously not, so here it is (assuming a single cup using regular teabags);

Empty kettle and fill with fresh water.
    Boil water.
    Place teabag in cup.
Pour in hot water almost immediately after it boils.
Stir around a bit with a spoon.
    Leave for 1 minute.
Squeeze the teabag against the side of the cup, then remove.
*Add milk to taste while stirring.

*If you must add sugar then do so after removing the teabag, stirring to ensure the sugar completely dissolves.

I puts my teabag in then take it out after a minute or so then 1 level spoon of sugar then a drop of milk. That is my routine. Sometimes when times are good I will dip my chocolate digestive into.

One thing that drives me silly is people who only half fill a cup with tea and then add another half cup of milk in on top of it.

I used to work with some Brazilian guys and when they made tea they honestly put more milk than tea into the cup.

You obviously teabag first, then milk.

If you milk first, there's little point in teabagging at all.

What's with all the sugar haters?
Any tea connoisseur would scoff at those that use bags, so bag users scoffing at those who put sugar in can't really talk.

At home it's from the pot, milk and 2 sugars in the cup first, then add tea after it's drawn for 5 minutes. Adding milk to hot tea slightly sours the milk and leaves a dodgy aftertaste, for me at least.
If I'm in work it's bag in the travel mug, with milk...add water, allow to draw, remove bag and add 2 sugars.
