He aint The Dude any more and he looks more likely to shoot you than to abide and things are certainly looking rather different for Jeff Bridges' latest go around with the Coen Brothers.

It's hard to imagine something much more different from The Big Lebowski than True Grit and yet it's Grit that brought the trio back together and Paramount have just released the first image from the Coen's adaptation of the Charles Portis novel. Here's how Amazon tells the story:
Charles Portis has long been acclaimed as one of America's foremost comic writers. True Grit is his most famous novel--first published in 1968, and the basis for the movie of the same name starring John Wayne. It tells the story of Mattie Ross, who is just fourteen years of age when a coward going by the name of Tom Chaney shoots her father down in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and robs him of his life, his horse, and $150 in cash money. Mattie leaves home to avenge her father's blood. With the one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Marshal, by her side, Mattie pursues the homicide into Indian Territory. True Grit is eccentric, cool, straight, and unflinching, like Mattie herself. From a writer of true cult status, this is an American classic through and through.
Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper also star.

This can't be anything but brilliant. Apparently they're not approaching it as a remake but a more faithful adaptation of the book.

I loved the original film with John Wayne and Robert Duvall so I'm really looking forward to this. :)

If this is a success, do you think they'll also remake the sequel, Rooster Cogburn? If so, they'll need to find someone to replace Katharine Hepburn, which is a mighty tall order. The obvious choice would be Cate Blanchett, who played Hepburn in The Aviator, but I'm thinking Sandra Bullock could do it.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I'm not so much of a Jeff Bridges fan having seen "Men who stare at goats". Man that movie was a fúcking travesty.

I read the book "the men who stare at goats" and I thought Jeff Bridges got the character spot on. Now I realise that the film is (very) loosely based on the book, but still, I thought his character was great. Film was pretty crap though:D.

Must admit I got a bit excited when I read about this, it will hopefully live up to what we have come to expect from the Coen's.
Am also happy that it isn't a remake as there is too much of that in hollywood at the moment

Any chance Robert Duvall might do a cameo?

When I first heard of this, I wasn't too hopeful (The Duke's finest role IMHO). However, that trailer really makes me want to see it, & could bring the western back again.

    Thanks for posting the trailer.

I'm sh1tting myself for this one - can't wait, looks amazing!!

I was a little hesitent about the idea of a remake, but I've read that it's actually a more faithful adaptation of the book. That settled, the Coens and The Dude are all I need to know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,560 ✭✭✭✭Kess73

Am looking forward to this one. I liked the John Wayne version, but love the book.

So a more faithful adaptation of the book with the Coens, the Dude, and Josh Brolin (that man should be forced to be in any western being made nowadays :)) sounds like my cup of tea.

That looks bad ass, that's both The Fighter and True Grit now coming out in December over in the US, what's the chance we get them in that same month? :(

    Great new trailer.

Oh Matt Damon! such a joker:D

It's probably more like "Retribution: Sometime in Jan/Feb around the Oscars" for us but I am officially excited!

Love the fact they have the shot of Cogburn firing with both guns whilst still on horseback in the new film.

Really looking forward to this film.

More likely to be a case of Retribution: on Oscar Screener mid December.

Saw the new theatrical trailer today, can't wait for this one myself. Coen Brothers can't go too far wrong, and Jeff Bridges was amazing in Crazy Heart

Looks promising for sure, you gotta be careful of Harry Knowles reviews sometimes though, if he's chummy with a director or anything he doesn't tend to give bad reviews, seen him gush over some awful ****e films in the past. The other reviewers on the site are better and they seem to be sharing the same sentiments for this, so fingers crossed it's as good they say :)

I think what you mean is that if a studio gives Harry a free mug he'll call their film the greatest thing since sliced bread but if they refuse to fly him to set he'll repeatedly attack the film until that is they send him a free DVD of the film and suddenly he re-evaluates the film as an unsung classic.

Its amazing how much sway a fat nerd with a laptop holds these days with studios

Brokeback didn't do it for ya no?:D

Dunno if everyone in here is a Western fan but for those who are 3:10 to Yuma is a must see IMO.

Have high hopes for True Grit, The Coen's have always been a bit hit and miss for me but im feeling good things for this. The cast is fantastic visualy it looks spot on and seeing as its not their original story it might not be that ****ed up!:P Saying that though, can't wait to see what unsuspecting scene this movie ends on!

I saw it, not bad...decent acting, i thought the use of dialogue was rather good, as in how the characters speak and the words they use. It wasn't epic but very watchable stuff. That young girl....she's one to watch out for!

Thought it was a highly enjoyable flick myself, definitely won't go down as an epic as not enough gun battles etc in it, but the dialogue was sharp and there was some excellent performances from Bridges and the girl (forget her name).

Hasn't been enough westerns over the years so good to see someone take a stab at it.

Watched it last night, 1st half was excellent. It seemed to just stall then take a dive after that. Things got wrapped up too easily and too quickly maybe.

I was expecting a (no pun intended) a grittier movie and maybe a more violent one. The performances were very good especially the girls dialog in the first half with the guy about the horses, I did laugh out loud at that. And when the 3 guys were having their last words they just hooded the indian :D

Am I the only one who struggled at times to understand Jeff Bridges in this  I almost wanted subtitles :D

Is this out in Ireland yet? Can't see it on any listings, thought it was supposed to be released on friday.

EDIT: Accepted that it hasn't been released yet, but can't find a solid release date for it. :/

Another EDIT: Gah 11th of Feb from imdb, there go my plans for tomorrow night.

FACT: The last decent Western was The Long Riders in 1980.

Agreed on each to their own opinion, which is why people shouldn't start statements of their opinion with the word 'Fact' which is clearly an abuse of the word. Pet hate of mine.

Thought it was enjoyable movie. Although sometimes when I wasn't sure what Bridges was saying :o

Have watched a lot of westerns down through the years, it is probably one of my favourite genres so I was really looking forward to this one.

Thought it was very solid but just missing that something that makes a western epic. I thought Bridges was excellent in it.

Looking back the last decent western I saw was 'The Assassination of Jesse James' still no classic but it is severly underated. It is also lot darker than 'True Grit' which gives it the edge in my book but then both films have a completely different style.

Up against the classics I don't think 'True Grit' stands a chance though, so I understand how one poster considered it 'forgettable'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,741 ✭✭✭✭Ally Dick

I didn't like it. I thought Bridges mumbled too much. It was incredibly slow for the first hour and then it bombed through the exciting bits. It wasn't different enough to the John Wayne/Kim Darby version. That little girl has a good chance of a best supporting actor though. Overall I was disappointed

Open Range - Never saw it
    Tombstone - OTT but enjoyable
    Dances With Wolves - excellent
    3.10 To Yuma - decent
    Unforgiven - very very overrated
No Country For Old Men - disappointing, especially the ending

My favourite western of all time is still The Outlaw Josey Wales

Thank God somebody else said it! Hugely disappointed by this flick... Tombstone, Young Guns II - my two fav westerns ever.

Thought it was enjoyable enough, good performances all round.

What about the original 1969 version though eh? I had a look at the trailer and it looks so crappy (the acting as well as the production values), can't believe it's supposed to be considered a classic, it looks more like a kid's movie. This new remake is definitely way better.
