They are the same as the gi weights, just 3kg taken away from each category.

Good call too peter, i think the closer we keep the weights and rules of tournaments here to the IBJJF ones, the better prepared people will be for bigger competition.

    :D

Was thinking this was a great idea, then realised no matter what weight divisions are organised I'll be thrown into an Absolute division anyway! :)

Good luck with this one Peter. I agree the more we do under official guidelines the better however once again I feel sorry for lads who are in the upper and lower weights who more often than not get no one to go against.

I'm holding an amateur MMA tournament in my gym that day so won't be making it myself but I'd be there in a heartbeat otherwise. I'll try to get some o the lads up to it, it's only 2 hours up the road.

sorry now if somebody already asked this but is there a website with the rules of the competition on it?

is it the same rules as a D class MMA fight(grappling point of view) or what?

if you have to ask that question you might need to run it by whoever is coaching you that you are thinking of competing...

    quick question,

from what i can see - there will be two cats: advanced and novice (-1yr).

Does the brown and blackbelt rule set apply to the advanced categories?

    Any advice appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

the usual rule set apply to the advanced section mate although the usual heel hooke etc will be banned for this event.Considering there will prolly be no brown or black belts competing I dont see why we should allow the subs that apply to that level. However,if we do get some brown belts/black belts we might arrange a superfight type category.
I'll arrange a quick rules meeting on the day before each section starts so that people are clear on what they are allowed..in saying that,I would expect all coaches to have had a couple of sessions with their fighters so familiarise them with the rules. As Alvaro told us at the refs meeting,BJJ tournaments are the only events in the world that the fighters turn up with no idea of the rules!!!!

one week before the entry closes for this tournament and I havent had a single application come my way.......Im stressing the point that there will be no entry on the day as I would like to have everything [ bracket wise ] sorted in advance so that the fighters will know how many will be in thier group.

what is the catogeries for u14s ? is it weight or age ?

Sent you my entry form just there peter.

I presume weigh ins will be done before your first match?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

under 14s will be matched by age/size/and ability.we want the kids to have an enjoyable day without being put off by getting run over by someone who is far better than them.We run a section for kids at the northern Irish bjj open and it went down very well.I have two very experienced kids instructors taking care of that section so they will sort all the kids out on the day.I will however, trust the coaches that if they have a 13 year old phenom then they will make the refs aware of this so that they can be matched against someone of equal ability.

why dont you use the full rules when it comes to leglocks in the advanced section, its a nogi event not a bjj event so belt color doesn't come in to it...

What do you consider "full rules"?

If it's regarding heel hooks, it's because it is a Nogi BJJ event run under IBJJF rules. At no belt or experience level from white to black under IBJJF rules can you do heel hooks.

As far as i'm aware the only major tournament in the world in which heel hooks are allowed is the ADCC.

You don't get a warm up area at the mundials.

    There was scales.

there wasn't scoreboards but they aren't exactly necessary.

    what was disorganized about it?

    yeah this is true actually.

but i think that was more because at those other tournaments it was the fact that there was no weigh ins and a myriad of other problems. players put in wrong divisions, unsafe mats, bad refereeing, disorganization etc.

it's definitely difficult to run a tournament, and people are still getting the hang of it since the sport is still relatively small, so i think the odd slip up is forgivable. tournaments that consist entirely of mistakes and disorganization however should definitely be highlighted.

but since this wasn't one of those, lets keep the thread more positive! :D

Firstly thanks to everyone that turned up and took part in the event yesterday.I hope you all enjoyed the day.
I must opologise for the chaos that surrounded the weigh ins but to be honest there was little room to move in the hall the centre provided and I was under the impression that everyone had weighed in.I know that the guys from Dublin all checked their weights on the way in as well as most of the Belfast clubs so I imagine that if there were some guys not cjecked they were in the minority.
In my opinion,on a positive note,we had good refs, the scores, although not displayed, were being tallied by the tables so were there if anyone wanted to check after they fought or by thier corners as the fight went on.One bug bearof my own was again, fighters turning up expecting to fight on the day, some clubs sending fighters down that I had no notice off and guys wanting to change weights. Also, some guys had registered...even some of my own guys....and didnt turn up!!I will deal with my students in house but this didnt help when we were trying to arrange brackets...also guys arriving late.
Apart from that,as I said,I hope all who competed had a good day and I look forward to seeing you all in January at the northern bjj open.
