Not one and I have no intention of buying any for the forseeable future.

One would need a blu ray player and a HD TV in order to get the benefit.

I have neither. I will probably skip Blu-Ray and go straight to digital storage. The end of discs is nigh - music is already halfway there, within 15 years only the denialists will be buying physical media for their movies & music.

Used to have 89. Jumped on BD last January, by May I was selling them (& my player) off. "Digital Storage" for me. HD is great, but BD is not worth the extra funds. Sell them off & get yourself a popcorn hour instead.

There's also a number of titles in the wild that have yet to receive a BD release but which hare already in HD such as the Star Wars & Indiana Jones sagas... I already have the DVDs of these, upgrading would be ludicrous.

20 something, there are some movies which benefit hugely from the format, TDk, speed racer, pixar movies etc, but I'm not too pushed about buying stuff again when I already have it on dvd.

none, lol it took me about 6 years to get into the whole dvd thing (from video) from when it started so im guessing blu ray will be the same or more!

I've got quite a few. I tried to get nito keepnig all my movies digitally, but I jsut prefer having the disks, and I'm a demon for the extras!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

Me too, theres something impersonal about having all your media on a hard drive, handy, convenient, but I like my special edition cases and carboard boxes (until I move, then I curse having a collection lol) I do have a lot of stuff on my PS3 but thats mostly tv shows and rips of dvds I can just chuck on to have something on in the background. I havent bought a cd in about 5 years, I'm moer of a movie fan than a music one so I like having some kind of physical media for that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,595 ✭✭✭bonerm

29 atm. I'm impressed with the format but haven't gone wild with buying them as
    a) I think disk based distribution is a dying medium.
    b) I have practically every movie I've ever wanted on DVD already so it has to be a new release or something I know I'm gonna watch repeatedly before I'll even buy on BD.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,489 ✭✭✭iMax

I love having physical media, love the artwork etc, but it's got to the point where I've too much, I have over half my collection in storage in the attic because I've no more room for cases.

Having them on a hard drive is fat more efficent. I use YAMJ & I have a perfect on screen display sorted any way I want, in seconds. I get the movie poster, synopsis, genre, cert, cast & crew, all displayed, all instantantly accessable. I can sort movies by year, director, actor, genre, title, studio etc. Far better & it's an exact replica of the disk. As for extras, you can have them too if you want, but I've got to the point that I've too much to look at without seeing extras also & even at that I only ever watched them once.

Same here. I just prefer having the disks. I have no problem buying music digitally, bit when it comes to video, I just prefer the disks.

Have maybe 40 or so blurays. Admittedly, some I have wondered why I bought on bluray rather than DVD (Leon, The Lost Boys), but overall, most blurays I've bought have been for special effects or extras (recently bought Chasing Amy 10th anniversary bluray even though I have it on DVD or the extras)

Stopped buying DVDs years ago unless it was something really special that was unlikely to be on TV, such as concert DVD releases. I've no intention of ever buying Blu Rays.

None. I don't have a TV capable of doing them justice, and it will be a long time before I have the space or the budget for a decent HDTV setup. I just don't feel I need it. 3D is even further off.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. Yep. Vinyl is niche now, the sole domain of purists. Vinyl also occupied the pinnacle of music delivery for at least 60 years, which means that they have a very sentimental value for a lot of people. VCR, DVD nor Blu-Ray can claim such an honour.

I agree with the gist of your post. I'm sentimental about VHS, but not to the point where I want any of it around me in 2010. Likewise I'm not going to be backing blu-ray if I can easily download better-than-blu-ray content from the internet in time.

I think music fans take their "possession" of the music more seriously than movie fans do in general. For one thing the idea itself of "owning" movies is a relatively new phenomenon for the mass market (25-30 years) whereas ownership was always part of the music for the masses distribution model (even going back to when the charts consisted of sheetmusic sales rather than records).

I don't have any Blu-rays yet and I haven't bought any DVDs in years. I've been holding out to see what would happen. But tbh I've given up on legal digital downloads. They are too expensive, too compressed, too locked down and there's not a lot of choice. They are improving but very slowly. The content providers aren't going to come around any time soon.

I love the idea of digital downloads, but it will be a long time before they replace optical media. Sure, you can download a 4GB film in 720p but it is still heavily compressed and is a fraction of the quality a full Blu-ray disc can offer. This might be good enough for most people as Steve Jobs says, but not everyone. I'm not paying more for a digital download when I can get it for less on a disc in far superior quality.

But the fact is most people are acquiring their digital downloads illegally. So of course digital downloads seem great. In addition to everything else, you are getting them for free. But if you have to pay for them you might think twice about the benefits.

For all these reasons, I'm probably going to make the jump to Blu-ray soon. Prices have come down enormously. Like CDs, I can't see anything replacing Blu-ray. Digital downloads are certainly the future, but it will be a long time before they offer the same quality as Blu-ray. And it will be a future in which you can't lend movies to your friends or sell them on Ebay when you are finished.

The "nor" there negates the "can". Syntactical nuance really, I do mean that none of the video media have been around for particularly long.

Agreed, people often associate music with some degree of spiritual or personal connection and because it's intrinsically something your listen to over-and-over, people want to own it. Movies aren't the same - most of my DVDs haven't been watched in over two years and most of them have only been watched once.

After digital storage, the only delivery medium left really is the cloud - video and music on-demand, from any device, without storing it on the device. This will work for movies as people don't mind really paying for a movie and then being allowed to watch it three times. But people won't tolerate any kind of "limited play" when it comes to their music. They want to have possession of the music to play when, where and how often they see fit.

Your timing is beautiful. :) I reread your post and spotted the 'nor' just before you posted your explanation. Accordingly I went to edit. However I wasn't quick enough and the mistake will now be around forever .... just like CD's.

I have about 35. See I have a rake of DVDs and almost all of them i refuse to re-buy; and there's a lot of new films that i like (ie i'd only ever watch once) so there's not much point in buying the blu-ray. I'm sure i'll buy the Harry Potter, Star Wars and SAW boxsets on blu-ray when they're affordable.

Otherwise i'm a huge fan of digital storage.

I have about 200 or so at this stage of which only a handful are ones I all ready own on DVD. People can argue all they want about the merits of digital downloads but there is no way in hell that a 700meg or even 4g file will ever look and sound as good as 25-50g blu ray disc.

    I have about 10 ,
I have a few hundred dvds that i wont be replacing unless its something that looks and sounds amazing on bluray.
To be fair i think bluray will have the disc market locked down for a good while .
As for all these people saying digital storage is where its at , you should know that some blu rays come with a digital copy of the movie that you can save to comp whenever you want, so by getting the blu ray your getting the best of both worlds.

Best looking blu rays i own are avatar and dances with wolves , must pick up pixar movies onnbb

I have over 150 blu ray discs, over 20 of which are concerts. I for one certainly appreciate the quality of both audio and video over dvd, with a lossless soundtrack there is no comparison. The only downside is the amount of bad transfers like the Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan releases which were remedied with better transfers. I am obviously a double denialist as I continue to buy CDs as well and will continue to do so as I love the entertainment industry and I want it to continue to release movies and music which I want to hear and listen to. I will support the industry by buying the releases which I want.

When I look at the awesome pile of eighty DVDs that is my collection, I feel proud that I have such brilliant taste in movies. I just don't think the extra quality really matters to a lot of films. I can't see Fargo being more enjoyable if it came in a blue case and had a crisper picture quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

In the past I felt the need to build up a collection of dvd's then progressed to Blu Ray-expensive then, cheaper now.It was about having something tangible, I prefer now to store my movies digitally-takes up no space which keeps the other half happy.I'd recommend the new release of Gladiator on Blu Ray though. If anyone has the original Blu Ray you can swap it for the new one, thread on it here on boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,551 ✭✭✭Goldstein

    Agree with zerks,

I don't own any. I skipped this iteration of the media arms race after doing it with video and again with DVD. Then I became disillusioned with the industry during the HD-DVD Vs Bluray war. How many times should you have to buy the same thing anyway? They'd change the format every couple of years if they thought people would go out and buy everything again.

I think the time of having half the room full of discs and boxes is beginning to pass with media players & servers slowly taking over as the interface through which people consume their audio/visual media. Especially now with interfaces like xmbc / boxee getting all relevant meta-data from the web - Everything is integrated in a way that the physical medium just can't match in terms of user experience. Granted the physical discs have an advantage in quality & sound but that difference is diminishing rapidly.

As for blu-rays, have about 15 myself. They've gone down massively in price in the last year so I'll probably start investing in more soon enough. Delicatessen is out soon on it, hope it's full of good sh*t and is good transfer.

Even the new series Samsungs have a built in USB port & media player (not a huge fan of the interface, but it's pretty cool that they have it). The new boxee is fascinating, coming out later this year, has full web & itunes integration & flash support. Will look closely at that one.

I disagree, I compared the BD, a 12gb MKV rip & a 3gb mp4 rip of avatar on a 46" in my mate's place & there was no discernible difference in the quality, all three were stunning & had full surround sound.
Thats the theatrical version of the lotr please tell you me didnt buy it ! hold strong until the proper extended editions are released.

Could be dead by then !! They're stunning.

The rest I simply "Leech" and they sound and look just as good as the real thing.
