    Hi Lads.

    Some advice please!

What exercises can be used to work on the muscles that go from the top of your shoulder to your neck (apologies dont know the muscle group name!)

Do you mean traps? Then dumbbell shrugs can be good, does exactly what it says on the tin, you take a weight in each hand, standing up straight and then shrug your shoulders from as low as they go to as high as you can get them (if you get what I'm saying).

Since I dont know what sorta strength you are I cant really advise a weight, so either you know yourself roughly where to start or start small (maybe 8kgs each hand)

To be honest, 8kg is very light. Most people will do a lot more than this due to the small ROM.

I know, yeah, but given that I don't know who I'm talking to I'm erring on the very light side to be on the safe side, chances are they'd be well able for a lot more but all they need to do is try it out and they'll know themselves if 8kg is too light and they can move up. My guess would be that they have a fair idea of where they're at, was just mentioning a small weight in case they were a total newb to gym

Yeah, I know. And generally, for the likes of squat, bench etc I'd agree as there is a risk of injury. But its not quite there for shrugs, if they try to grab 30kg dumbells and can't shrug them, then they can just change down to a lower weight. They aren't going to injury themselves by just holding them

also, if 8kg is all they can manage, then they don't need to worry about doing shrugs for a while
