Just picked up a second hand wii with 3.3e firmware, I think this should be easy to mod with no games needed, am I right? I've never modded a Wii before but I'm handy enough with modding and flashing and have done psp's, xbox dvd drives, iphones etc. before so I feel confident enough. What's the safest and easiest way to do it? Can someone point me to a tutorial that takes each step slowly? Thanks in advance!

Start with the Bannerbomb exploit, then install the Homebrew Channel. Someone also mentioned Pimp My Wii before here too.

If you've done the above consoles then this should be a breeze to you :)

ok, i've got bannerbomb and the homebrew channel working, I also installed some homebrew apps, but i need to install a new cios or something, it seems more difficult than what I've done so far. I've also installed bootmii, should i back up my nand?

Backup your nand as the next step. Did BootMii install as Boot2, or as an IOS? If it's over Boot2 then you can easily recover your Wii if you brick it.

Regards the cIOS files, they are needed for certain things. To be honest I find the amount of them confusing too, & with all their variations. Just take it one step at a time, there should be a list of the most needed ones somewhere.

ok, backed up my nand and had boot2 working so that's going grand. got the new cIOS installed, but what I'm trying to do still doesn't work..is there a way of updating my wii without losing the homebrew capabilities? I think maybe what i want to do won't work because it's on 3.3

I used Waninkoko's 4.2E updater at the time. They don't recommend updating to 4.3 at all, so stick to 4.2

Actually over at Wiihacks there is a guide for 4.3 but personally i'd stick to 4.2 .

guys, do you think there's any point upgrading to 4.3 or should I stick to 3.3e? Half of me feels like further tinkering, the other half feels like if it ain't broke, don't fix it :p Is there anything good on the wii shop?

I'd upgrade to 4.2E if I were you. You'll get SDHC support, and a few other bits n pieces. 4.3E has NO advantage over 4.2, the only changes are homebrew protection related.

Sorry for the mild hijack here...

Just a quick question regarding Wii modding, can all Wii's still be modded or is there a newer official firmware on newer models that stops it somehow?

    Cheers

Yea they can all be modded. The newest 4.3 requires u have a game in order to mod it.

Nice one, i wasn't totally sure, haven't had a Wii for ages! :pac:

Ok everyone. I've been playing Mario Galaxy 2 non-stop so haven't been doing much modding. I did install the homebrew directory and then from there install a load of emulators and the wiimedia player. It's a brilliant program the way you can select what you want on the wii and it downloads and unpacks it for you. I was pretty impressed with the n64 emulator, particularly the way it can use the tilt functions of the wiimote to control games. I still haven't upgraded but I'm planning it soon so I can use SDHC. Can anyone recommend any other good homebrew apps? I've been using the wii internet radio a lot as well. It's a powerful little box considering all the things you can do on it, I'm already more impressed with than my 360, but I'm sure if I had a jtagged 360 I'd feel differently.

There's an app called Homebrew Browser, which lets you sift through all the good homebrew via the Wii, with which you can download straight onto. Very nice little app

Just a quick update, used 'Pimp my Wii' to update all the IOS and system files on my wii, pretty much makes sure everything on your wii is up to date and remains hackable. A very handy program indeed!

    Huge +1 for that

I've heard nothing but bad things about pimp my Wii bricking Wiis, but I have to say the test mode did help me work out what I still had to do to get mine up to date. If you do use it, use it with caution!!!

One thing I'd highly recommend is Priiloader - takes a bit of faffing about (you'll need to find your own hacks.ini file), but lets you do stuff like block disc and internet updates, and you can also set it to auto press "A" for you at that annoying starting screen (and mute menu music/clicks etc)

    Hi
I just got my wii (not even opened the box yet) and want to mod it. Is there a good upto date guide to doing it anywhere?

    Thanks.

You can block online & disc updates through Priloader, it's all in the tut anyway!

You shouldn't update via nintendo after softmodding.

    One more question.

It has firmware v3.4E....should I update it first or just leave it as it is?

I think it might be better to upgrade to 4.1 if you can, i'm not sure how you'd go about that though cos if you do it through Ninty, they will just put you straight onto 4.3 which you don't want.

Up as far as 4.2E is fine, 4.3 is do-able but needs a specific game/s...so for simplicity sake - stick to 4.2.

How do I update to 4.2 and not 4.3...have tried moddind but a lot of the installs fail...still working tho1

I used Waninkoko's 4.2 updater to do mine, but 4.2 was live at the time. I'm not sure if the updater is used in conjunction with Nintendo's own servers or he has his own, but worth checking out.
