Can Motor oil for a Petrol car be used in a Diesel car?

Lads here's the situation.I purchased oil for servicing 06 Passat 2.0TDI 5W40 full synthetic but I noticed when I got home it's not specific for diesel.I remember before that I purchased the one for diesel engines. My question is, is it okay to use this oil in my car? Thanks

The answer to the side-issue spec question probably depends on the distance/time between changes, imo - i.e. lower spec oil with (much) more frequent changes => not much of a problem*.

* No, I won't define 'problem'.
