    Hi All,
Can we use this thread for people to promote or request testing help for any appinventor apps?

I just started using it about 10 minutes ago, and have a app installed on my handset that will purr when i pet the picture of a cat or shake the phone.

    :-)

Lets also not forget the Mobile Application Developement forum too
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1277

That might be the best spot for help with app development

can we use it for requesting for apps being developed? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,265 ✭✭✭MiCr0

sure - it seems about has difficult as visio or powerpoint, so the only hard part is coming up with the idea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

Sorry the idea is already there...got mixed up with OS ;)

im sure alot of people would love a boards.ie android app too :)

have a look at XDA Forum app :) something really nice and simple :)

I'm working on something at the moment. I'll definitely post here for testing/feedback when it gets to that stage.

Surely the type of apps you can make with this are extremely limited.

"...instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app's behavior."

It's hard to see how you could get any useful/new functionality. I imagine a million more wallpaper and soundboard type apps flooding the market...

On the other hand the visual editor for building the GUIs looks nice, so if you could maybe use that as part of your development that'd be cool. While writing the implementation yourself...

Already doable. No need to reinvent the wheel.

That XDA app is basically a modified version of Tapatalk which is used across plenty of forums across the net. All we'd need is to convince the boards.ie admins to install the plugin server side and we'd be good to go.

Ok, so I put together alpha version 0.01 of LecPic this evening.

LecPic is an Android timetable app for Electric Picnic.

The app inventor is fairly intuitive but very limiting, therefore the app is so far very basic, there is an option to download the source though, so hopefully I'll be able to just edit the java to add anything that's missing, e.g Menu Icon or hardware back button functionality.

    img.php?s=5&d=http%3A%2F%2Fidirlion.org%2Fep%2FLecPic.apk

Obviously the stage times aren't available yet, so I'm limited thus far to just a list of the acts on each day.

Ideally, the final app (once stage times are confirmed in a week or two) will have a sub-menu for each day listing each stage and the times, and hopefully a list of all acts on at a certain time.

I'd like to add a search function (or even an alphabetical dropdown) to allow you browse acts and find the time and day they're on at. Might throw in a map of the site, but I'm not sure if I want to go playing around with GPS etc, batteries run out quick enough at festivals as it is.

Feedback appreciated. Anything else that would be useful in it?

I really only made it to try out the app inventor. It gets a thumbs up from me.

Sounds good! Have a look at the Pukkelpop app on the market now, I thought it was very impressive. You could include a map like in that one where it's just an image taken off the site, no need for GPS.

I don't plan on bringing my Desire to EP though... don't know what could happen to it!

I made a simple J2ME app for EP last year which I might update for this year. It's annoying that the timetable won't be put up until the 1st Sep though.

Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines would be easiest. Scrolling is automatic on the app inventor but I'll have to look into zooming.

True that. If the weather is any way bad my phone will stay in the campervan all weekend, wouldn't risk it!

Yep, I remember it well. Great little app. It's half the inspiration that gave me the idea for this.

I brought my Hero to Oxegen this year. Unfortunately I didn't have access to App Inventor at the time, so I used a webkit instead. I came up with this:
www.cad-monkey.net/Oxegen and from the feedback I got, people seemed to like it. (use the standard Android browser to view)

Obviously for next year I will try to have it as an app. I may mess around with App Inventor to see how easy it will be.

It is great having this tool, if only I had the imagination to think of an app!!

what about a "dude where's my tent" app for festivals? app inventor has gps libraries afaik, you just need an arrow pointing to an already recorded point and distance to it.

I think it'd be handy for finding the way back, specially in the dark and drunk...

im sure where did i park my car would do the trick :) works on the same principle sure :)

well that car locator app gives you navigation (e.j driving) coordinates based on maps, I was thinking more something like this:

Anyone fancy developing an app that lets you programme a working shift pattern into you calender or even a stand alone app that
will follow a specific shift pattern.
I think there is an iPhone app that has these capabilties

Would love to get my hands on this, have tried to create something similar but havn't really gotten to grips with the appinventor yet.

Link is a 404, I guess you've taken it down until the timetables are out?

I can't find it on my milestone. Any chance you could either have a look into it, or throw the apk over somehow? I know the Milestone occassionally has market bugs which stops apps showing up..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,297 ✭✭✭Ron DMC

I've updated the app a bit (including the name)

Added an option to save the location of your tent by GPS and get directions back to it later (still buggy, seems to save location ok, but force closes on launching maps. I haven't fully tested it on my Galaxy S 'cos GPS is ****e as it is, will work on it tomorrow evening).

And also, I'm including links to the Arena and Campsite maps, so far just the Arena Map.
(The maps load by linking to an image online as the Android App inventor doesn't allow zooming. Still trying to figure out a way to load the image locally to prevent data usage, open to ideas).

Once the times go up tomorrow, I'll throw together a better list divided by stage etc tomorrow evening, so keep an eye out.

I've hosted the apk here in case the qr code doesn't work for anyone.

Note that you can't upload App Inventor apps to the market so you won't find it there, and you'll need to have Unknown Sources ticked in Applications Settings.

    Don't think so.

And even if I could, twenty five bills, feck off. I wouldn't ever get that back, ads or selling it. It's not even nearly good enough to pay for. The app inventor is still very, very basic. Can't even upload a launcher icon. It has potential though for making handy apps like this. Let's hope google don't abandon it prematurely like they did wave.

Yeah, you'll need to re-download when I make updates unfortunately. Trying to keep data access to a minimum to save battery and cost. Hopefully we'll have a bug free final version before we all set off on friday morning.

I said I'd throw my J2ME app up here for anyone not bringing the smartphone to EP.

Sorry man, didn't get a chance to look at it last night -was busy sorting out tents and camp chairs.

Threw in the times this morning and removed the gps functionality that wasn't working anyway. Link above is updated of you just re-download.

The times all look ok to me but I haven't checked every single one. If you notice anything missing or even a stage I missed, let me know.

EDIT: Just realised I forgot to remove the button for gps. I'll tidy it up later and make any final changes, font size for times etc. In work now, so it'll have to wait to be perfect.

Ok, mathew found a bug. It seems sunday times are being pulled in at all. Easy fix, but I dunno when I'll get a chance. There's a few unsupported character bugs as well in some act names.

I've now fixed the Sunday times and the bad text.

Also removed the defunct GPS functionality (anyone that still wants that can just download the where's my car app).

And I've added more maps to the map menu, good idea to load these before you head down to cache them so that you can switch off data onsite.

Anyone know if the market will be open to paid for apps soon? Google continue to be fairly tight-lipped about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭crimsonfire

Hmmm I know a few folks who work in Google. Might hassle them to find out.

In the meantime there's always this. Whack the apk file on your SD card and install using market and your away in a hack. Must be rooted though. Enjoy! ;)

I've had access for a good while now, haven't really gotten my head around it yet, all i really want to do is create a simple app that will allow me to pull in content from my websites database or RSS feed and display it in a useful format potentially breaking it up by category.

I dunno why i can't get my head around it. i'll have to sit down with the tutorials properly now and see what i can make work

But surely an app to read in my RSS feed, and maybe offer category choices to limit what the are seeing should be possible no?

    Yes, that is possible.

Do the tutorials. You will get a good idea of how the system works in them.

I submitted the day of the announcement :o

1 month after my last post here and still NOTHING.

btw guys the compass app i have on my phone allows the use of GPS so whereis app might not be needed. haven't tried it yet but i assume it points you to the desired point from a list of recorded ones or something.

I know it's a bit late for elec. picnic :o but might be useful for other outdoor activities, or while going abroad and so.

Looking at it, if this is the case, I think this is what will make it useful for the development community - as a UI design tool - as this is what I personally find most awkward and time consuming about Android.

In itself, I think the blocks concept is very good for simple apps, but quite limited. Ultimately, the business logic behind most applications can't really be reduced to a few pretty coloured blocks, and this would limit the scope of such an IDE.

I've been playing with this a bit, haven't made anything useful but just testing different things. BTW you can't download the java source code so you're stuck with whats on app inventor
