Don't join any societies unless you want to descend into the unvirtuous and facile world of student politics. If you are interested in history and literature then read history and literature; if you wish to find like minded people to talk about these things to then you will find them regardless of whether you join a society or not.

    Indie music: DUAMS
History: History Society (not the Hist)
    Literature: Litsoc
Sports: there are many sports clubs, it depends on what you like.

Here's a list of the societies, for your perusal, and here's a list of sports clubs.

Joly, Enviro or Geog Soc; small societies, field trips, pub crawls and table quizzes.

    What PurpleFistMixer said.

But also, just head in for Freshers' week and see what takes your fancy.

    Ignore denerick.

Head in on monday and have a chat with people at each stand.

Give them a chance to persuade you to join their club. Try to keep an open mind too. For all we know, Jugger is a fantastic sport!

    In fairness he makes a decent point if you ask me. I would join;

-Comedy Society, for cheap tickets to comedy gigs
-Players Drama Society, for cheap tickets to any performances they do or host,
-Hist(Historical Society) / Phil(Philosophical Society) for cheap use of the pool rooms in the GMB.

Don't go joining everything, its a waste of time and money. A lot of the clubs are really too small to have any major impact anyway. If you're involved with the people you'll be involved with the club, simple as.

    Ignore Gearoid.

Head in on monday and have a chat with people away from each stand.

Don't give them a chance to persuade you to join their club. Try to maintain a position of distinguished disregard. For all we know, Jugger is a paedophile ring.

    What yer man says above.

I'd get involved more so in a sport than a society though..

I tried joining Jugger last year! Abject failure, not nearly enough people to make the society work. But it does sound like a fun sport if they do have enough people.

Try the Theology society for History and Literature too, it's built out of love! That said, one of the guests coming up this year is Peter Singer. Guaranteed fun, the ultimate controversial ethicist. He's covered animal rights, abortion and even euthanasia...

Possibly a bigger name to come too!

But this is beside the point.

If there's interest, I can write up a fairly objective opinion of societies and sports clubs. Most of them are obvious, though some have expanded into other fields (Sci Fi now does gaming, MSISS now do poker)

Don't you know that the Statutes of 1799 banned shillelaghs from Trinity grounds? Blame that Tone rascal.

sorry, what is this about? since when was the point of a club "to have an impact", clubs are about meeting new people and having fun. The only impact the HIST or the Phil have is on the amount of stupid posters we have to look at walking through the college.

What about the Entrepreneurial Society, that any good?

I mean they're too small to achieve the aims that they (presumably) set out in their own charters. With very small societies theres a risk of it being monopolised by a group of 5-6 people who are happy to leave the purpose of the society by the wayside in favour of having a laugh with their friends.

The clubs all have seperate specific purposes, thats why they're here. They must prove the neccesity of that very nature to the CSC before they can even exist. Its not just about having fun and meeting new people, although it does help.

I'd appreciate an example here, fh. I don't know of any society which do nothing but sit around and chat to the detriment of their actual aims. You're giving a misleading impression of college societies.

I don't think it would be a good idea to do that. But you'd be right if you thought I had a particular society or two in mind. Doesn't take a genius to figure out which ones, especially if you've ever dealt with them.

Go through the smallest societies and see which ones you've never heard of, never seen do any events, run events poorly or even cancel events or be generally undependable to fulfill commitments, then you'll find them.

I looked through the list, and so far the societies I've found who I've never seen an event by are: Anarchist (surely a requirement for them?) and the course socs. PM me names, maybe?

    Course socs?

The anarchist society had at least one event 2 years ago. That's all I can say.

I am involved in the Entrepreneurial Society this year and I can honestly say we have a lot of big things already planned. You will hear more about them during freshers week.

Course soc's generally just bring in speakers for seminars and host receptions at least for science anyway. Bigger ones like Physoc, Mathsoc, DUBES and Engsoc tend to do more for their courses. DUBES having a particularly strong presence from what I can see.

Course socs, i.e. Engineering Society, archaeological society

And the anarchists seem like friendly chaps.

Yeah right. A few hacks will have the wind up their sails for freshers week in order to get new members and ergo funding, after that the society will degenerate, chewing on the carcus of the societies budget, smugly confident they've outwitted the system.

Would you believe, there's actually a very good reason we don't have a Ground Quidditch team...

Far too much effort to train in Santry.
