This Is England 86

Was gonna put this in 'Television' but thought it actually seemed more apt here, seeing as it's spin-off of the Shane Meadows film from 2006.

It's a 4-part series (60 minutes each) which is being written and directed by Shane Meadows (which is a relief) and he's pretty much all of the cast back:

    this-is-england-86.jpg
It's 1986 - the year Chris de Burgh is at number one, Top Gun is filling the cinemas, VHS is trumping Betamax, the World Cup is raging in Mexico and over 3.4 million Brits are unemployed.

As Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) sits his last school exam, the realisation dawns that adulthood beckons and in mid-80s England he's going to have to find his own way in the world. Luckily life has dealt a surprise hand to his friends too and no one is quite where they thought they would be. Woody, Lol, Smell, Gadget, Milky - they are all looking for love, a laugh, a job and something that resembles a future.

This Is England '86 is a brand new drama coming to Channel 4 this September. It revisits the gang from the hit film This Is England three years on.

Seen the advert the other day, can't wait for it.

Considering Shane Meadows is consistently one of the most interesting directors producing movies today I will certainly be tuning in to see what he can offer us on TV.

Saw the advertisement for this on Film 4 the other night, looks interesting. I really enjoyed the film but if this is this is set 3 years on then
why is Milky in it? Didn't he get killed at the end of the film?

Was actually going to start a thread on this over in TV the other day :pac:

I only saw it mentioned through a quick glance in *shudder* Total Film (I had a few minutes to kill in a newsagents: that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) and was instantly intrigued. A great story, a great film-maker, and a channel that has a decent rep for stuff like this. Definitely interested!

Just read on wiki that Meadows confirmed that Combo would be back, great stuff, I really rate Steven Graham after seeing him in This Is England, The Street, and his minor yet great turn as Baby Face Nelson in Public Enemies.

His role as Billy Bremner in The Damned United was strangely comical too. :P

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't
he lying in a hospital bed at the end of the movie? it was never revealed whether he lived or died.

It's been a few years since I saw the film but didn't
the young lad's mother tell him that Milky was alright near the end?

    Yup.

Yeah.. Stephen Graham is a cracking actor.

I'm actually suprised to hear he'll be back.. and how exactly he'll come into the fold after "
    what he did to Milky
    ".

Shane Meadows can do no wrong.....and if he did....just throw a bit of Paddy Considine at it to make it right.

    I could be wrong..
but I don't think she said he was alright.

I remember it being left somewhat ambiguous.. I think she tried to reassure Shaun in saying "he'll be fine" or something to that effect.

Shane Meadows can do wrong. Thought his latest, Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee, was by far his weakest output. That said, I still think he's very good. This is England was good but not that good. Think he's done better stuff, Dead Man's Shoes probably topping the list.

Meadow's is one of the best filmmakers working today. And he never compromises. Thanks be to science we have Channel 4 and Meadows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

Ah yeah I remember now, I actually thought
    he was dead
after I first saw the film a few years ago but on reflection it's actually more of an open ending. Plus Shane Meadows confirms it in the bolded out quote below (not that it needed really needed confirmation as he was in the TV ad)...
On 6 January 2010, Meadows said on his website that the project would be called This is England 86.
    He said Milky was alive,
Combo would return and that Woody has a factory job and is about to marry Lol. The scripts are complete and filming is due to begin at the end of March.[17] He later added that scooters including Vespa and Lambretta will be used in the series - reflecting the Scooterboy movement in the mid-late 80's - and that it is currently scheduled to air in September 2010.

I suppose he could return like he did in the film
in the film did'nt he just come out of jail and 3 years have passed in the tv series so he could be just out.maybe he returns as a completely reformed character:eek:

I did not know about this, definitely going to be watching this! And jesus Milky has really bulked up!
Obviously doesn't want to be a slouch in a potential rematch with Combo!

Yes, saw this advertised for the first time last night, I've really high hopes. So far as I can tell, Shane Meadows can do no wrong.

It will be interesting, maybe he'll get a visit from one of the lads in prison, I'd say Shaun or Milky.

Not strictly a film, but a TV series "sequel" to a film soon to be aired on C4.
Shane Meadows is taking up the tale of Shaun and his mates again, 3 years on from the original film.
"When I finished This Is England I had a wealth of material and unused ideas that I felt very keen to take further audiences seemed to really respond to the characters we created and out of my long standing relationship with Film4 and Channel 4 the idea for a television serial developed. Not only did I want to take the story of the gang broader and deeper, I also saw in the experiences of the young in 1986 many resonances to now recession, lack of jobs, sense of the world at a turning point. Whereas the film told part of the story, the TV serial will tell the rest."

I quite enjoyed the film itself, with the exception of the ludicrous girlfriend subplot, so it will be interesting to see what they do with a four part series.

Starts on Tuesday at 10pm on Channel 4.

Got out my copy of 'This Is England' and watched it this evening. Girlfriend had never seen it and thought it'd make a nice change from the Twilight twaddle she normally watches.

I think she enjoyed it.. as she had the same reaction I did when I first saw it - sat in silence for the deeply affecting final 5 minutes. Looking forward to Tuesday.

Gonna try her out with 'Dead Man's Shoes' this weekend.. she might actually develop some taste in modern cinema! :)

looking forward to this one, right up ch4's street!

My GF hasn't seen loads of the popular modern films so I've been showing her the likes of Alien / Aliens, Terminator 1 / 2, The Thing, Leon, etc...............get her out of that Twilight crap :pac:

I'll have to show her this film, too.

Channel 4 Listings Monday 6th September

For anyone who doesn't own a copy of the film, C4 are showing it on Monday night at 23.00.

I'm not saying you can't watch '86 without having seen the film but I definitely think it would make a difference and enhance the series.

    Channel f*cking 4?

Anyone see the movie and looking forward to this? Just thought I'd remind peeps in case they weren't aware it was on. The film was gritty (one particular scene was verrry hard to watch) but very good none the less.

Hope Milky managed to survive. Stephen Graham was excellent in the film and is back for this 4 part series.

Film was excellent. Top class acting and direction with a cool soundtrack.
Based on past experiences of TV 'spin offs' though I'd be pessimistic about it living up to the standard of the movie.
Obviously I'll still watch it though:)

I actually put a thread about this in 'Films' a few weeks ago.. as I thought it would probably be more suited there but yeah, looking forward to it.

Can't ****ing wait. Going to some serious music in it hopefully. The film soundtrack is one of the best. Just watched the film tonight on C4, first time watching it without crying my eyes out (well I shed a small tear)...the ad's rather gave away the cliffhanger for me ie.
Milky is in them so he clearly didn't die, I was always under the impression that he did.
Having a party tomorrow night for it, button up shirt and Toots and the Maytals album are ready!

yea i cant wait to see what combo gets up to next and if hes a changed man. its centered around woody girlfriend Lol as far as i remember reading in a magazine so it will be interesting to see a girl as the focal character and she would get it rough of me must i add well fit ;)

Yeah I was full sure he was dead at the end of the film. Getting a bit more serious and a bit of substance now.

looks like he might be getting more than a smooch off Smell!:D

Cracking stuff... a bit more light-hearted than the film but very well written, with some hilarious bits in it!

Found the scenes with Flip to be hilarious.

    Looking forward to more!

Indeed, a great start. I found the scene between Shaun and Smell very moving as it showed us just how much of an impact Combo has had on him. Can't wait for more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,193 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Smell still looks the exact same.. waaay too creepy!

Was interested to know how the scene between Shaun and Combo at the start in the car came about.. judging by Thomas Turgoose's youthful appearance, it must have been a deleted scene from the movie or something.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭Tomohawk

Enjoyed that, no vespa's though! Only those silly bikes the gang had, that was funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,193 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Gonna get the thread from the Films forum to be merged here as I've already put my point across there.

yeah it looks good, although i'd imagine watching all episodes together would be a lot better than having to wait a week for each episode.
also the soundtrack was pretty decent again, until it got to that last song thats used on the car crash ad here
