Why do GAA fans start shouting and screaming before the National Anthem is finished?

Why do people do this? In no other sport do you see this happen. At any rugby or football game the crowd waits until the anthem is over before cheering/ applauding etc, or if an Irish athlete/ boxer etc wins a gold medal, the Irish people present in the crowd do likewise.

Why is it different at GAA games?

Maybe it's just me, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I find it quite disrespectful to the anthem, and it drives me mad anytime I am in Croke Park.

Its a tradition and it goes back as far as i can remember, some people believe that cheering their county's name first brings good luck

To say it is disrespectful to do this, having impeccably observed a minutes silence for whatever reason, then to observe the entire anthem bar the last few words is a bit silly imo

    Excitement? Encouragement? Happiness?

It's really not an issue man, let it go

Actually I can see why it is done.

The crowd tends to start cheering during/after the following lyrics:

Le gean ar Ghaeil, chun báis nó saoil
Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar,

    Translate that into English:

In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal,
’Mid cannon’s roar and rifles’ peal,

Historically it must be some sort of Anti-British thing. Seems a bit much to still be doing that in this day and age though.

Ever watch Ferrari win a Formula One race?
The tifosi go mad, air horns throughout the anthem and especially at the end.

Well I meant, in no other sport in Ireland.

The Chicago Blackhawks Hockey fans cheer the US anthem instead of sing it. It sounds ridiculous.

Fair enough, the Irish only part wasn't in the your OP

It happens all the time at Irish soccer matches aswell, so it's not just GAA fans. It's something that annoys me too.

Maybe annoy is too strong a word. It does irritate me slightly though.

Dont think it is exclusivly a GAA thing. At the Football they are cheering around the same point on Wed night in the Aviva. As for the Rugby they dont even show enough respect for hte anthem to only sing it after they have done that Phill Coulter tosh?

Bothers me a tad but no where near as much as the scum that wrap the Natonal Flag around their waist and dragging it off the ground/ sitting on it for a game.

This really annoys me as well as the last line of the anthem is the best.

Le gean ar Ghaeil, chun báis nó saoil
Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar,

means nothing without Seo libh canaig amhrán na bhFiann.

In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal,
’Mid cannon’s roar and rifles’ peal,
    We’ll chant a soldier's song.

They sing that Phil Coulter tosh AFTER the national anthem. I'm nitpicking I know but so is this whole thread!!!

I think the people who fought for Ireland would turn in their graves if we DIDNT roar on our county toward the end of national anthem. there's even a little pause to accommodate the roaring.
if any of them soccer games across the pond had half the atmosphere of a gaa match they would be far more attractive. Even the smaller GAA grounds have a fantastic atmosphere and probably better then most premiership grounds and thats only for allianz league games.

Thats absolutely rubbish, it happens at every Ireland Rugby and Soccer game too and has for a long time. Everyone tries to get in with their shout first, really annoying but it's no different in any other sport. The whole premise of the thread is bogus.

There always seems to be a big roar, but I don't know anyone who does it and rarely see people around me burst in screaming at the end of the Anthem.

That does irritate me, but what really gets me going is when a small group of idiots shout 'Up Tipp, C'mon the Dubs etc.. during a minute's silence. The worst case I remember was the 2005 league final and there was a minute's silence for 2 young GAA players who died in a car accident in Enniscorthy and some Armagh idiots on the hill started shouting, 'C'mon Armagh' and more joined in and it seemed that they were all shouting before the minute's silence finished.

A minute silence is quite simply disgusting. No excuses for that and i don't limit it to one county but rather an ethnic tribe of morons!

It has a pause specifically for the roar, so people roar, and it sounds great, go pick on the rugby for not playing it at all.

Cheering etc in the minutes silence is very bad form alright but i cant understand why so many are annoyed by cheers in the last few seconds of the anthem. Very little to worry about if thats something that stands out!

Compared to cheering during minutes silence its nothing at all. I remember one of the Dubs qualifiers this year and there was a minute silence and there were still people singing.

I think you are referring to the Tipperary game. In which case the singing was coming from the fans entering the stadium who werent aware there was a minutes silence on. This happens quite often and you cant really blame people for singing outside the stands who don't realise theres a minutes silence on.

We were up the very back row of the lower cusack and the noise from the bar with chattering and laughing was unreal, but in fairness these people didnt know there was a silence either on so we can't be too harsh.

There was most definately nobody on the hill or in the stands singing during any minutes silence before Dublin games this year.

Doesnt happen at Rugby games. Been to many of them down the years and the crowd waits until the actual anthem is finished before roaring. At GAA games the roaring begins DURING the 2nd last line (sometimes the 3rd last line).

Oh and people stop taking it so seriously. Its a bit of a light hearted thread. Just a pet-peeve of mine and was interested to see what others think!

Funny actually, I recall my Irish teacher back in school from a good few years back telling us that the last couple of lines in the anthem are about rebelling against those awful brits, and people traditionally cheer those lines of the anthem at Croke Park as a result.

Its a bit mad to be honest. I mean it was 90 years ago! Time to let go perhaps. Or maybe people just do it out of habit now.
