Hi I am new to boards,:) but hoping some one can give me some advice. I need minor surgery, My dr has said I have to loose weight, I lost a stone in the past 9 months by health eating and exercise, but He say's I need to loos another 80lbs,:(
he has advised lipotrim, for rapid weight loss. I am very reluctant as I have read lots of bad reviews, I want to loos weight for good but the reports on long term success are fairly negative, on the other hand it could take me another 2 years to loose the weight I need. A friend has suggested Alli. Am I mad should I just do the lipotrim till I loose the weight and then try keep it off???????

I am somewhat surprised at a doctor recommending lipotrim. Do you mind me asking you your current weight? You can be honest, nobody here will judge you.

Is it a case that you need the surgery sooner rather than later but also need to have the weight off in order to have the surgery?

Your Dr may feel you are not losing the weight quickly enough. Perhaps you could start on the food diary section.

Can you please tell us what your current diet and exercise regime looks like. Losing a stone in 9 months is very a very very slow weight loss and could be quickly accelerated with the right approach.

A general consensus seems to exist that losing about 2 lbs a week is a good rate of weight loss. Therefore, you could lose your 80 lbs in 40 weeks (or probably less if you were dedicated).

Forget Alli. In clinical trials, the prescription strength version Xenical, caused weight loss of 6lb per year more than placebo. Clincally significant, but hardly what you need. Alli is half that strength, so you could logically expect 3lb weight loss over dieting alone.

Also, Alli demands a very low fat diet, or you'll have to wear dark trousers and spare knickers in case of "Alli accidents" www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XGxiUKZMsA

Low fat diets tend to be high carb, which makes it very difficult for anyone who is apple shaped to lose weight on.

I strongly recommend that you do some reason on low carb diets. There are several around with a good track record. Try looking at Atkins, South Beach, Idiot Proof (good for women!), etc and seeing what would work for you.

    hay, Thanks for the replies,:D

I am 95kg and 5"1. :( yes it is a case of needing the surgery sooner rather than later.
currently I go to the gym 4 days per week doing step and kickboxing class 2 of each. I really enjoy the gym and enjoy going after work it also offers stress release. I go through great phases of steady weight loss then it seems to stall for a couple of weeks. The stalling is where I struggle most to keep motivated, with the eating, and can often put on a couple of lbs, this is because of the portion size. I am aware I am a emotional eater.

I think the food diary is a good start, I haven't done one in a long time. usually I have oats for breakfast, with full fat milk, cause I cant stand skimmed milk it is the only time I take milk, lunch is usually a chicken wrap, or salmon bagel, Dinner is quite late in the evening about 9pm after I have gone to the gym, and usually consists of veg stir fry with meat and noodles or rice, or potatoes, veg and chicken. I usually have a ham sandwich adout 1 hr before I go to my class.

Low carb diets can have rapid results if you follow them to the letter. In fact low carb caused more weight loss than a low fat diet plus Xenical (the stronger, prescription-only version of Alli) in a recent study.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

If you have weight to lose quickly i would not do lipotrim - you will end up with the weight back on. Low carb is very effective like temple said above and the weight falls off rather quickly. Idiot proof diet can be read in a matter of hours and you can decide from there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

Stalling is common and happens to everyone. Sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and tough it out.

I'm delighted to see that you're a regular at the gym. Fitness will make a big difference.

Looking at the food you listed, I think you would see a lot of progress if you went low carb. You have a high carb component in every meal, and while oats are a good carb, bread, bagels, wraps, rice, noodles and potatoes are all a waste of calories. The nutrient to calorie ration on all of them is very poor.

Try having a couple of eggs for breakfast, and add some mushrooms or leftover veg to bulk them out. For lunch, keep the salmon or chicken but eat it with a big green salad instead of the bagel/wrap. Stirfry for dinner is good, just drop the noodles etc and eat a load more veg. And perhaps swap the ham sandwich for a tub of cottage cheese?

    Hay Guys

Thanks for the advice, after carefull consideration  and a long chat with my Gym I have decided to ditch the dr's suggestion (for now). Plan as of monday is
    1) keep daily food diary (including weight and portion size)
    2) cut down on carbs
    3) increase water intake reduce coffee and alco.
    4) continue to do classes, and my instructor is redoing my programme to compliment the classes, and a mini programme for after the class to boost my weight loss, aiming for 2lbs per week (MIN)
    6) exercise diary
    5) weekly weigh in at the gym including BMI
I am giving it 6 weeks and returning to my DR for chat!:D

Fair play, sounds like you're doing great already, maybe we can help keep each other on track! All your gym workouts are really good, I'm just doing walks and cycling coz the budget won't stretch to the gym at the moment, although it's defo something I'm going to get into in the next few months, or sooner if my weight loss continues to be difficult! Lots of luck! :D

youve all giving great help to the other lady regarding lipotrim
i need help or tips on how to loooe weight in 2 weeks as ive been asked to a wedding i was thinking about taking lipotrim to help with the weight loss.
is this a good or bad idea?

Very bad idea, it really is a last resort for people whose weight is such an issue that the side effects of such a severe diet are not as bad as their own immediate health problems (i.e. a very small percentage of people). I know a girl who did it a few months before a wedding and ballooned in the months afterwards, textbook yo-yo dieting

There is a very long thread about lipotrim here, but worth a read

    Hay water chick,

How much weight are you hoping to loose? I wouldn't do the lipotrim for the wedding. I looked into all the pros and cons and I realy dont think it's worth it. You have 2 weeks, if you stick to a strict diet, lots of water and exercise you can easily loose a few lbs.

Try low carb high protein, exercise and lots of water. Failing that buy a good set of contol underware

So tempted to.................... weigh myself today

I picked Saturday for my weigh day but I am so tempted to have a sneek preview!
I have been very good since monday,:D even avoided lots of temptation yesterday, a very well meaning husband offered me ice cream cause I am doing so well, I said "no", wine cause we are both off today again I said "no" finally when I was going over to the shops later last night asked for crisps which I happily bought for him, and let him eat and wasn't even tempted to try.

Had a healthy breakfast this morning (25g oats will 100mls of milk). I than had a long chat with him about my struggle and the need for him to keep it in mind. He was very understanding but I was firm I need to see him put it into action.

I feel go but just want to reafirm for myself that I am doing well

Two stone in two weeks? Don't be silly. Even a stone in two weeks means losing two pounds a day, every day. That means a calorie deficit of 7000 calories a day, which means not eating anything, and running two marathons a day. If you think that you're going to look good at a wedding after that, I've got a nice bridge to sell you.

Seriously, eat a good balanced diet, cut out the junk, and buy an outfit that flatters you at your present weight. Get some good underwear, including a sheepdog bra, and practice good posture, and a model walk.

    Hi Wellie

I had to do something similar earlier this year.

The waiting time on my operation was cut short, due to various symptoms rearing their ugly heads, requiring my surgery to be scheduled sooner than any of us originally expected.

So after assuming we had a year to lose 100lbs, suddenly I needed to get as much as possible off as quickly as possible.

My GP prescribed Xenical...which was further endorsed by my consultant, my surgeon and the hospital's dietitian.

With a combination of Xenical, twice daily Wii Fit Plus, sporadic cycling & regular nagging from the dietitian *we* lost over 3 stone in less than 3 months.
Xenical is magic in my books...if nothing else it keeps you honest :D ....but it doesn't/won't do the job on its own. You need to make more effort than just popping a blue pill at meal times. However, if you do qualify to be prescribed it, I would recommend discussing it as an option with your GP.

I didn't hit the magic target my surgeon wanted me at, as the op came sooner than expected...but it went well, with no complications, and the anaesthetics team were happy enough with the weight I had managed to lose and my fitness levels.

My dietitian explained that whilst the lower weight would make things easier for the anaesthetics team....it was more important to be "heart healthy", so even if the weight isn't coming off as quick as you or your medical team want, make sure you keep up the fitness stuff.

Depends on your body shape and budget. I'd go to a big department store, find the assistant in that section and explain what you need. She'll be able to tell you better than I would.

Unfortunately it's not a question of how long it will take to come off ( it will come off pretty fast if you stick to lipotrim to a t. the heavier you are, the quicker it will come off) but how quickly the weight will go back on when/if you resume regular normal eating patterns.

    Hi Water Chick,

Taking on board what you're saying about wanting to be 'wedding fit', I would echo the suggestions of low carb diet and lots of water. The lower carb, the faster the results usually. Look at the food diaries for inspiration.

Keep your food 'clean' (i.e., prepare it yourself) and move a bit. The latter will not only help you burn energy, but it'll keep you out of the fridge. ;) Anyhow, if you do the above for 10 days, you'll be a new woman (inches down, no bloat).

To answer the underwear issue... I hate doing this, but I know from experience... bring the dress into the best lingerie dept near you and try the lot together. If you're in Dublin, head to BTs and try EVERTHING in the spanx range and check out Yummie Tummie and Walcoal too. (Like Eileen says, your body shape will determin the best thing). And try the 'bodies' and control stuff in Marks and Spencer. I swear by their bodies - wear them every day, depending on level of 'control' needed...

If you can bear to ask for help from an assistant, they're so knowledgable on sizes and solutions and will speed up the process and can give you 'insider tips' (like pinning your bra to the top of your extra high-top pants, to stop them rolling down, etc)

It really is a case of trial and error though. And bring your shoes too. They make such a difference to 'finished result'.

Good luck! (and most importantly, enjoy the wedding!)

    hi all,

Well finally reached my 1st weigh in day, Had a pretty good week stuck to the food plan, diary and water, only got to the gym twice because I ended up with an infection and 3 days off work.
the results:......... Lost 4lbs.:D Very happy and looking forward to next week.
I have done out my shopping list and planned all next weeks meals.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Best laid plan gone to pot.

Well I am not going to dwell on it but I need to type it and get over it. Very happy with my loss and done my weekly shopping.
Instead of sitting in we decided to go out for the afternoon some thing different, break the habits, so off we went to a local fair, ran into some old friends and ended up having dinner out. last minitue and wasn't planned. I didn't have starter or dessert, Only had water for the whole time we were out, 3 pints! for diner I had poached salmon, with veg and baked potato,(no sauces/filling) only used 1/2 of the 10g of low low for my potato. I really enjoyed it.
After dinner we decided to go back ours for drinks. I had about 6 mojiots with slimline tonic, lots of Ice and mint. during the evening I felt hungery, I know I shouldnt of been hungery. I ended up serving mixed nuts and (more) Salmon, with low fat cream cheese (.2g of fat &61cal per 100g)on melba toast with chives.
Can any one give me advice on what is sensible restruant food and nibble for those nights out. we have a few "social" events over the next couple of months. Over the past number of years I have shyed away from going out cause I always felt concious of my size. But part of all this is getting some self confidence back, and start living again. I am also planning on using each event as a millestone to look better. Think it will keep me motivated.
P.S thanks for reading my rant.

Hi I did Lipotrim about 1.5 years ago. You have to go to a pharmacy to get it and the pharmacist weighs you in each week.

Okay firstly the bad things;) - the shakes are totally disgusting but after 4-5 days of holding my nose I was able to stomach them. The bars that you can eventually graduate on are the worst tasting things in the world (that is unless you love solidified marmite :(yuck!)

I was so weak I was hardly able to walk up and down my stairs at home without stopping for a rest - no energy.

Around 3-4 weeks after I came off the shakes my hair fell out (majorily - in clumps!!)

    The weightloss didn't last :(

The good: I am 5ft4" and was 10 stone 3 lbs. In 5 weeks I got down to 9st and looked even slimmer

As I totally lost all my taste for all food I started craving mad things - apples, raw peppers, brocolli - I never ate these before and still eat them today.

In my opinion I wouldnt recommend it. It's alot safer to just up your exercise and eat lots of small meals with veg, pulses, protein and wholewheat carbs. I am doing this at the mo and have never eaten so much food - and I've lost 4lbs last week already:)

    Best of luck

Hi, I've been reading through a lot of these threads lately, as I've been at my wits end about losing weight.

I need to lose about 3 stone realistically. I have a bmi of around 30...

I tried lipotrim a couple of years ago (I was a bit heavier than I am now) and it was the same as any other crash diet I've ever done. Absolute torture! I stayed on it for 6 weeks -that's no solid food for 6 weeks. I felt weak, my face was pale and i looked sick all the time, then I came down with the flu, yada yada yada. the stuff is horrible, and the bars are horrible too, but I actually got excited about them because at least I got to eat something!

I've also been reading through a thread about xenical, the prescription weight loss drug, and Alli, which apparently makes you incontinent if you eat any foods with fat in them, the thought of these things alone is enough to make anyone poo their pants!

So anyway, I can't believe it took me this long to discover THE SECRET!
the secret is, there is no secret. losing weight takes hard work and most of all, Patience (which I was not blessed with!). For years I've been trying all of the quick fix methods, and have failed every time, all because I was just too impatient to go with the old tried and tested "healthy eating & Exercise" and actually stick to it for more than a month.

I've now embraced the hard work and patience thing, and I'm so much happier, because I know that if I keep at this long enough, it will work. I'm not going to be kylie Minogue next week, but I'll be happy and comfortable with myself if I just keep going.

What I'm doing is eating within 1200 calories per day (low fat and steering clear of bread & pasta) and going to the gym 4-5 times per week. I've been doing that for the last few weeks, and today my sister noticed a difference. Also I'm much happier, and my skin is bright and healthy looking, so it's totally worth keeping up and just being patient :)

I hope I don't sound patronising or anything, but I really feel it's the only way for me, ditch the impatience and it will happen.

are you male/female and what height are you?

I'd just be a bit sceptical of going both low carb and low fat If I were to choose I'd go low carb. 1200 calories seems very low but that may depend on your height and other things

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 bunchiz

I'm female, 23 years old, 5 ft 3", and I currently weigh 12 and a half stone (it had been going up to and over the 13 stone mark lately, so a change was in order).

The reason I'm avoiding bread and pasta is because I think I have a bit of an intolerance to them, they make my tummy all bloated and sometimes I get heartburn from bread. When I say low-fat, i mean replacing milk and butter with skimmed milk and spread etc. But I am having a little bit of oily fish like mackerel as part of my meals.

Oh I forgot to mention, I've been taking this supplement I got in the pharmacy, called Pharma Nord CLA booster, which is supposed to just help burn fat and build muscle -if you're already working out and eating healthily that is. It has green tea extract in it. I bought it around the time I was looking at all of those diet products, and the pharmacist said I wouldn't qualify for the ALLI thing (thankfully!)

What do you think of my little regime anyway?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 5,620 ✭✭✭El_Dangeroso

Just so you know dairy fat is a rich source of CLA you're paying the same amount of money for low fat dairy with the fat and therefore CLA taken out and then paying for a supplement to put the (synthetic and nowhere near as effective) CLA back in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 bunchiz

 oh... I had no idea to be honest....
I just had the supplement tablets in the house from when I went to the chemist looking for some sort of miracle!

I am trying to watch the calorie intake though, so that's the reason I've been getting skimmed milk and other lower calorie alternatives when I'm doing the shopping.

But I'm really happy about deciding to give it time and have patience. That was the only thing holding me back before, I was my own worst enemy. I think once I stick to it and keep doing it, i'll get where I need to be. I think the attitude change is a lot more useful to me now than CLA booster supplements. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

What's your daily food intake like? post a day of what you eat

Unless you're eating huge quantities of milk/butter I can't imagine having low fat versions makes much difference.

If you're avoiding the carbs I don't think you'll need to worry about them anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 bunchiz

Breakfast - piece of fruit, apple or grapefruit or both, depends!
Lunch - salad and tuna or mackerel.
    Dinner - 1 potato, frozen mixed veg/broccoli, chicken/fish
snacks - fruit or those go-ahead yogurty thingies, or a low fat yogurt.
a few cups of tea during the day with milk... and a couple of bottles of water.

do you think I should give up the CLA boosters and go on full fat dairy?

Ok at your height/weight & age an online calculator is telling me your BMR(amount of energy you use by just being alive) is 1604 calories

But you say you exercise at the gym 4-5 times per week

So to calculate an approximation of how many cals you use up I'm using this
    Harris Benedict Formula
To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2
    If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
    If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
    If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

So that means you're burning at least 2486 calories a day ie a net deficit of almost 1286 calories a day which leaves you at losing 2.6 pounds a week. I think that's a little excessive personally. So I def think youd be better off with real butter as its much better for you than the lo-spreads.

If you had 1400-1500 cals per day you'd still lose 2 pounds per week at your current weight. Of course as you lose weight the amount of calories you need a day goes down but I still think you could do with eating a bit more.

Do you feel full with your diet? is it hard to stick to? I think you should have scrambled eggs for breakfast and the fruit as a snack somewhere during the day instead

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 bunchiz

Wow, thanks a million for working that out for me! I never would have gone into that kind of detail on how many cals I needed. I'll definitely do the scrambled egg in the morning and an extra bit of fruit during the day.

I'm not extremely hungry as it is, but I do have to go to bed a bit earlier to stop me wanting to eat at night. Portion control has always been a problem for me so I thought I'd be really strict on myself, but maybe that's not the best approach for a long term solution.

Have you done the big weight loss thing before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

No worries its fairly straight forward with that website I've linked. And to convert stones to pounds just stick it in google.

I was about 1.5stone overweight before. I think you're definitely on the right track with patience and honesty. I think what crash dieters really miss out on is the gradual improvement in how they look.

The lighter you get the slower the weight comes off. So if you lose lots of weight fast you end up disheartened very quickly.

God:D it seems so long a go I considered that no food option wasworth consideration. I didn't take the fast fix option. I returned to the gym, kept a food diary and got my head down. I lost 15lbs which wasn't as much as I wanted but it was slow and steady. I get frustrated some times as I think I am still missing something Dr sais I my weight loss is to slow. I currently go to the gym 6 days per week, Monday 45 mins kettlebells,30 min spin, 55 mins tone and cardio. Tue 45 mins kettlebells, wed 45 mins rebounce 55mins tone and cardio, thur 45 bootcamp(cardio), off fri, sat 45mins spin, sun 3km jog/run 5km cycle. Eating is okay I think, banna or porriage for breakfast, homemade soup and sandwich for lunch and dinner veg, meat and patatos (3 scoops) or rice or vrg stirfry. 21/2-3 lts water a day, dont drink milk or eat yogurts dont eat between meals. only have alco every second week. my gym instructor says I dont have enough protin in my diet and my body is not resting enough.at this stage it has become a habit and I enjoy the classes it helps me de-stress after work. one problem I have so much energy when I get home I can't sleep. I am converted no more fad diets. so any tips on what I can improve on would be welcome.

I'd say cut back on cardio and do more weights in the gym. Should help with sleeping if you push yourself hard enough.

I'd cut the carbs down a lot. Maybe have eggs for breakfast with a little bit of bread. Though porridge is good too. Lose the banana have strawberries instead

Lunch don't have a sandwich, have a salad with meat/fish/cheese. For dinner don't have potatoes(not regularly anyway) increase the meat and compensate for the carbs with veg. Have brown rice for carbs but not a huge portion.
