Queries before buying a boat

    Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a small boat second-hand, but have no previous boating experience. The nearest lake to me is Lough Ennell, so that's where I'd use it. I have a two queries before I move ahead with this though.

First off, what sort of questions should I ask the seller? Do I need him to prove it is watertight and that the engine works? Are there requirements that I need to check before I hand over my money?

Secondly, does one need a licence/permit to keep a boat on Irish lakes (i.e moor it at the dock)? And when I'm on the lake, are there regulations about where I anchor or for how long?

    Thanks,

    Antilles

Hi,If the boat has a engine over 15hp and is used on inland water ways you will have to register it with "waterways Ireland" they will send you out a bit of info and your number for free.If you are going for a powerboat you may need to do a course to get insurance on it other than that there is no licence.
As for mooring check out some of the local clubs and talk to some of the other boaters they can fill you in on safe places to anchor and moor.
If you are buying a boat from a free add you will find most are sold as seen,on bigger boats I would look for a engineer's report this will tell you if the boat is safe to go on the water.
If your not sure about boats find someone that is and bring them with you when you go and look at it or buy from a boat dealer, remember you will be putting your life in this boat so buy the best you can and dont skimp on safety.:)

Make sure you get a mechanic to check out the engine..

Been out of the water for 6 weeks now due to a corroded manifold.
