What ever you're looking for, you wont find it in AH.

Brummytom is looking for a ride for the last 3 years and hasnt found it here yet.

OP, if you are between the age of 17 and 24, and you are worried about finding yourself - dont.

I think finding yourself is learning to be comfortable with who you are in terms of personality and attitude towards life...deep

I know yeah, especially when it involves travelling somewhere ridiculous! Did you really think you would find yourself in Thailand? The only way you'll find yourself in Thailand is if you go there so that you will then be in Thailand! What have you accomplished? Wild goose chase imo

Does anyone really say to themselves on their deathbed "ah bollox, I wish I had found myself, what a waste of time"

The trick to finding yourself is time, it takes a lot of time.

And testing yourself. Try as many different styles of life, of thinking, of careers, of education as you can get your hands into. It can literally be a process of elimination.

You won't find anything though, you'll just find out whether you like France or not.

Think of the last place you seen yourself and work from there.

Seriously though, not too many people have a life plan. Just go with the flow and do what makes you happy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

OP, you'll drive yourself mad trying to find your place in this world - one of the most beneficial things in life for me has been the realisation that "que sera sera". And here's a line from another twee auldie song by some country chick: "Teach me to take one day at a time" rather than worrying about e.g. five years' time. You can't predict where you'll be then, so why formulate a plan which requires such foreknowledge?

It's a good thing to have goals in life (although if a person is more inclined to just wander along aimlessly, all good if that's what they prefer) but a rigid plan is only applying needless pressure to yourself and setting yourself up for disappointment. If you don't know what you want to do career-wise, study-wise etc, make a list of what you're good at and try to match these up with potential courses/careers.

    1) wear a red/white striped jumper
    2) get some randomer to take pic of you in background of busy place and publish pic online
    3) profit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭franklyshocked

You'll experience doubt every now and then in yor life but it up to you as a person to realise that life moves on, who you are and who you'll be in five years, ten years from now are entirely different people.
So if you're fundimentally a good person then you'll grow to accept the good in you and have a good time, or if you're a bad person then you still and have an opportunity to try and make yourself a better person.
Everybodys experience is different. I can only tell you mine. You'll find your own, one way or another

How the f*ck does that work?

    - Spend 6 months being a buddist & part time fireman whilst studying biology
    - Spend 3 months being a Muslim drug dealer
    - Spend 1 year as an undercover CIA agent & study part time as an architect
    - Spend 2 years working in the porn industry while using the money to fund community services for underpriveledged kids in Sudan & taking a course in organic gardening

Then realise, that after all that, you were happier being John, the postman from Carrick-on-Shannon & go back to your normal life.

"Finding yourself" is just a poxy americanism for idiots with nothing better to do than think up different terms for boll*xology.

Just don't get into a mindframe that your course defines you, finish whatever course it is that you are doing and once you're in the door of college you can go on to more places and a varied CV is pretty useful

In short, shut up, take whatever course you were offered, shag your way through collede and then worry about what to do cos no one knows

OP, put this whole business of "finding yourself" out of your head and chase worthier pursuits, who in this day and age makes a conscious decision to "find themselves" anyways? it's not a question that can be answered satisfactorily. find yourself buried in a damn good book or woman and you'll be sound

What does it mean to "find yourself"?

To find yourself - it means - to find your purpose in life.

IMO - life comes in two halves.

The first is what you do.
The second, is who you are.

They both tie together and are interdependent.
The strength of one is based on the strength of the other.
When one lags, so does the other..

(I'll just post in small doses to avoid writing something long only to find I've been banned)
