I've set a goal for myself to do cycle on the Oct bank holiday weekend (12 weeks time). The route will be Dublin-Laragh-Blessington-Dublin. its a good 7 to 8 hour cycle at a guess.
Currently I do about 2 hours jogging per week and the last 2 weekends I kicked off the cycling and did a 2 and a bit hour cycle from Dublin city to Enniskerry and back.
For time reasons and to avoid boredom my preference is to do one cycle per week but build it up to 3ish hours and concentrate on packing in as much height and build up the speed. maybe the last week or 2 might go for a cycle 2 days in a row. With the route I'm doing most of the effort height wise will be in the first half
I'll keep up the jogging as well and will add to it as well, So does this seem reasonable? and any tips to get the most out of it and enjoy the ride on the day?

You're not going to improve very quickly doing one cycle a week.

Here is the link to the 160k training plan from the Sean Kelly tour site which would be about the duration that you are estimating. You could probably try starting at week 4-6 and see how you get on.

Maybe take in an organised cycle like the Sean Kelly 90k as a mid point to your training. It is closer than your target goal and may provide more motivation than a cycle that is 3 months away, as it is easy to let those ones slide and endo up wrecking yourself as you try and build up 3 months work of prep in 2 weeks!
