Out of contract so I'm a free agent. Due an upgrade. Disappointed with reports of iphone 4 esp. antenna issues as reported in Ireland.
Ideal iphone 5 = 4 inch + screen. 8mb+ camera. NO reception issues. I'm beginning to wonder if the next leap with phones will happen outside apple.

Where are you hearing reports of the iPhone 5 spec. Are you sure they are reliable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

You can wait and wait for the next best thing and you'll end up with nothing.

If you want an iPhone 4 now go for it, the antenna issue isn't THAT bad. If not..... *cough* Android *cough* ;)

    *Awaits angry mob*

I heard a rumour that the iPhone 5 will be 4G ONLY, so it will only release in Sweden and Finland.

Get a Galaxy S 4 inch screen, same processor as iphone4 as Apple bought it of Samsung the only thing is it has a 5mp camera not 8mp + ..... buy a digital camera

I'd wait for reports on the iphone 5 performance from the early adopters before comitting. Ivor Callely is always ahead of the curve on such matters, so we can expect some written evidence soon.

Seriously if you think the iPhone 4 has antenna issues "as reported in Ireland" iPhone is not for you. If I was you I would look elsewhere.

Sounds like a great idea for a new thread; "As reported in Ireland"

Not sure the Iphone 4 antenna is worst than iPhone 3 or any other mobile phone, from what I heard it may be even better.

I got the 4 and no signal issues, I have it in a case though. Better signal than my 3GS.

I don't understand. You're out of contract but DUE an upgrade? I would assume that means now? So you can't get an iPhone 5 just at the minute. I think you might have to consider something else unless the 5 is being released next week. You got some inside knowledge there?

Am sticking with my 3GS and will wait til next gen - not a significant hardware upgrade for me in iPhone 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,077 ✭✭✭3DataModem

Yes I also heard one of the features was "no reception issues".

I wonder will that be in the ad.

Seriously - you want a phone then buy the phone you want. Don't friction worry about the next model. It's thinking like that keeps the car and yacht business in business.

I heard they are pulling IPhone 5 due to laboratory signal issues and moving straight to IPhone 6. I think I'll wait for iPhone 6, it's rumoured to have an optional screw on antenna.*

I heard only the 5 richest kings of Europe will be able to afford it, hence the reason it's called iPhone 5

    Agreed.

In the interim there are some good alternatives in the upcoming HTC Desire HD and Windows Phone 7.

Interesting range of responses! I will establish a thread in AH for those who like the parallel universe thing. Now back to business...

There are issues with antenna of iphone4 listed in this forum which are more relevant than the US ones. It gives pause for thought. I'm in no rush at the moment: I waited past the 3gs for iphone4 but I'm disappointed. Mobileme constantly falling over in its calendar sync every time theres an upgrade to iOS is another headache. I use the iphone for a lot of work related stuff too so the bigger screen for docs and emails is getting to be more essential.

I don't understand what you mean by this?

I think people are making silly replies because they don't understand what you are getting at either.

Look, there is always something better around the corner. The iPhone 5 will be better than the iPhone 4. But then the iPhone 6 will be better than the iPhone 5. And so on. You could be perpetually waiting for the perfect phone.

I think you are honing in on the non-issue that is the antenna/bars problem to the detriment of making a choice.

i've had a 2g since they came out in 2007, i "downgraded" from a n95 which at the time had a 5mp camera and flash but i decided to forfeit that for the beauty that is the iphone.

iphone 3g (and 3gs) were never a big enough hardware jump for me so i held out for the 4.

i thought it was everything i wanted, the iphone os but with a camera/flash that is standard in phones nowadays.

however, i am hugely dissapointed that Apple have cocked up the design with their antenna problems. there is defo a problem, whether it completely drops your calls or not is not the issue - i do not want to spend $$$ on a phone which has a design fault. but i'm so desperate for a camera flash on my phone i think i'm gonna bite the bullet.

    damn you apple!

I think that the current screen size of the iPhone is perfect. 4 inches is too big IMO. As for the camera megapixels aren't everything.

True, I've been told many times before it's not the size that matters it's what you do with it.

So am I correct in saying you don't actually have the iPhone 4 yet?

If not, how can you speak with such authority on the "design flaw"? Have you read the posts/comments from other users on this forum?

Most, if not all, actual users, including me are verifying that while you may see some bars drop the call quality is far superior to the 3G or 3Gs. My 3G was never great but I would say my 4 is better than even my old Nokia 6233 which was very good.

Also bars are irrelevant on a digital phone. They were designed for analogue uses but when its digital you either have a signal or you don't.

Not on mine there's not. Do you actually have one?

I had one, definite signal issue. I live in an area with bad coverage, but still could use a variety of phones(iphone 3g, 3gs, htc desire, numerous nokia models) with no issues or dropped calls...

Unfortunately, I can not say the same for the iphone 4. While fine in areas with good coverage, it can not be relied upon in areas with poor coverage- unless you have it in a case, or so I heard.

How so? You need to know how good your signal quality is or your "signal" would be useless for voice/data transmission.

Back in Analog the quality would suffer if you had a low signal. Now the quality of a call doesn't suffer. It just cuts out.

I have followed reports on the apple media devices forum since ip4 came out and its a mixed bag of reviews. The antenna issue is reported by Irish users too.
That now established, what I'm thinking about is whether the advantages of ip4 outweigh it. Where does the balance of opinion lie?

I can't answer that as I don't have an iPhone 4. Why not start a poll? Get a clear, definitive answer once and for all.

Heard another rumour that NASA were getting involved with Apple to develop space age technology for a phone called mPhone :D

    Holy mother****ing god

Get a cheap bumper, antenna issue solved. Calls get dropped in areas with poor reception shocker.

A new iPhone just came out and you're seriously considering waiting until next year? For what? A slight hardware upgrade to a non-issue? The iPhone 4 is great, if you can afford to buy one you can afford to buy a cheap bumper to fix the antenna issue.

But if the antenna issue is too big a deal, then just wait. You obviously don't need a new iPhone so spend the money on something worthwhile.

i'm no expert in phones but was reading about the sony ericsson xperia x10 on a uk website. is this worth getting in ireland or would people consider the iphone4 a better buy?

i read something about google and the android market which isn't available here.
