So sc2 refuses to boot up for me this morning, after a few attempts i get to main screen, try to continue campaign and then it crashes over and over again, i sent off the resulting erroe message to blizz.
I then go through the repair process 3 times and it still happens.
Im now reinstalling the game,im confident my progress will be saved with my account but this is a major pain.
Has anyone else had to do similar?

Ive had the game since release and only today have i got problems for the first time.

Is there anything in the event log about why the application crashed? A corrupt game or driver file?

    No nothing in event log.

It worked initially after a reinstall but started happening again.
Ive since tried this suggestion and it seems to be ok
    now.

    http://eu.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_GB&articleId=42816&parentCategoryId&pageNumber=1&categoryId=7042

I cant understand why its been fine since release up until today.

    Crashing again :(
Official forums are swamped with similar stories.

Graphics card type? Is it overheating?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

I have frequent crashes too. I've tried replacing ram but it doesn't seem to help. Its frustrating tbh because I've lost about 20 games from winning positions due to crash to desktop.

I meant to update this thread.
No overheating whatsoever, my rig is fully up to date etc.
Ive tried everything suggested by blizz with no joy.
Its mostly crashing when i play the campaign, over the weekend it refused to continue the campaign and just crashed every time when loading last played campaign point.
So i decided to reinstall, i then ran into yet another issue when it refused to reinatall, i tracked down the issu that many are having and had to delete registry files [very sloppy by blizzard tbh]
After eventually reinstalling i could continue campaign but since then its crashing while playing cinematics before missions [ive tried the suggestion incase i was getting the overheat bug] which im sure i wasnt getting anyways.

So i decide to sit on it until blizz address the crashing issue since it seems a widespread issue according to official forums.
Thinking to myself i can be happy to play multiplayer until they address the campaign crashes, now when i get matched for a MP game the map loads but im getting a "Desync!" message ingame and the game is lost with only an option to view the score screen.
Again upon research the official forums are awash with this issue too.
Seriously this insanely sloppy from a games company i had infinite confidence in for years.

Hey OP, did you try the repair function? And if that doesn't work try deleting the variables.txt file in your SC2 documents folder(check documents it's in there). That seemed to fix my problems with random crashing to an error report.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Yep ive done so multiple times, but thanks.
I kid you not ive tried every suggestion out there, ive researched extensively.
Ive reinstalled windows this evening so might get a chance to try tomorrow if it helped, actually gone back to Windows 7 32 bit instead of 64 bit.
    Ill test it out tomorrow.

Strange issue, hope you get it resolved.

How old is your harddisk? Mabye the files are being written to a damaged part of the disk, the windows reinstall will help i suppose, but maybe defrag your machine, then stick a couple movies on to fill the damaged area, then reinstall the game to a new area of the hard disk. Worth a shot.

Personally, I'm thinking its something to do with windows 64bit. Alot of the people with problems are using it. Not all obviously, but a substantial amount to make me ponder it.

I defrag every week, ive checked for HD errors, the HD is 2 years old, good HD Samsung Spinsoft.
Going back to 32bit W 7 seems to have helped, i could play the next mission on my campaign, could load it and view the cutscenes too which i couldnt before.
Im 99% sure my HD is/was fine, all fingers point to W7 64 bit at this stage as Kirby suggested.
Hope to get time later to test some more.

Interesting. Though both me and my flatmate use windows and vista 64bit and don't have this issue.

That is bizarre, i'm running windows 7 64bit, have had no problems at all, so it could be a whole bunch of things clashing, such as gfx cards and drivers, hope the 32bit OS solves the problem, but you've gotta sacrifice a faster machine just to play, which is lame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

Everything had been going so well. :p Had gone a day without any crashes and gotten to number 1 in my ladder. :D Then bam, crash to desktop halfway through an online match. grrrrrr.

Is there really that much of a difference?
I installed a few more of my games just now and they run every bit as good as 64 bit.
Ofcourse i lose on on almost 4 gig of ram but so far theres no difference to the gaming, maybe if i have a lot going on with other programs etc i might notice but so far no difference.
Ill see how things go, if i notice performance loss ill go back to 64 bit asap, should be quick enough process just upgrading.

eh,defrag everyweek is not really a good thing, right? i remember i heard some reason about that back in the day i was in the computer lecture:pac: a 2 years old HD can be the problem.

if i were you i will do a complete clean format since win7 can be installed in less than 30mins. currently running myself on win7 64 has no problem at all.

I have done a clean format and full reinstall, havent you read my posts lol.
There are issues with W7 64 and SC2 according to posts on official forums.
Your one of the lucky ones to have no issues with it :)

As for too much defragging ? first i heard of this.
Also a 2 year old HD is not the issue, ive had HDs for 6 years in the past without issue.

woot didnt really follow all the posts :pac: about the HD caused' i always have 0 confidence on any non-Western digital harddrive that i owned after 2 years:P since i am a typically bit torrent user haha

strange i have several friends on win7 64bit have no problem running sc2. Is it Win7 Professional? Thats the version we have anyway.

and ya, too much unnecessary defrag can be bad for HD, i quick google for ya! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006030914977
while tbh i have only seen people with crazy torrent usage broke their HD, i will only defrag my HD once in a while.

    I have W7 Ultimate.
It must be said i had about 10 days hassle free SC2 from the day i bought the game on release day.
I was running 64 bit W7 ultimate at the time.
I made no changes to pc setup or new software etc since then previous to the onset of crashes.
Also to update i played a couple of MP SC2 games just the last hour and got my first SC2 crash since going with 32 bit so it seems its not win 64 issue for me afterall.

Did the crashes start happening after one of the SC2 patches?

What a utter load of bollocks. Have you looked at the read and write lifespans of hard-drives and the usage required to hit this number?

just going to add my 2 cents to this,

im using a 4 year old harddrive, 200gb western digital drive.
I do a full defrag once a week for the last 4 years, and i use advanced system care which defrag's certain files every few hours when the pc is not busy.

Im also using windows 7 64bit, and i dont have any problems.

however, ive just finished building my brother's computer, and i was doing some testing to find out what was causing his random bsod / game crashes.

it turns out 1 of his ram sticks is faulty after running memtest.

so i took my ram, put it in his pc, and it worked perfectly for 24 hours.
i then put the working 6gb in, and it started to crash.

i put all 6gb working ram into my pc, and it caused sc2 to crash to desktop a lot.

when i lowered to 4gb, it worked fine!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Thats is interesting royale, a couple of months back i got 8 gig of ram that a mate wasnt using and replaced my 4 gig with this 8 gig.
My system was rock solid previous to this but now that you mention it i started getting some BSOD every so often but nothin major.
btw my SC" crashes are not BSOD, just CTD.
I wonder if this new ram is causing an issue.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

well my brother had 4gb of 2 x 2 gb ocz gold ddr3 ram. 1 stick is fauly as it causes bsod in my pc aswel as his.

but with the working 6gb 3 x 2gb ocz gold sticks we have, it crashes to desktop if there is more than 4gb in either pc.

*bump*for menu crashing problem, right after Raynors face and the planet rings the menu freezes, sometimes the password screen but still freezes, the music keeps playing but have to Ctrl Alt Delete and kill the process.

Installing latest drivers (Forceware 259.xx -> 260.63) didn't help, I added the two lines to variables.txt as linked above, didn't help.

    Any ideas?

    Core 2 Duo, GTX460, 4GB RAM, Win 7 64-bit.

yeah, seems the same all over, battlenet fourms are offline too. it seems we should wait it out before re-installing or anything. see what blizz say when they come back online.

Same happening to me too. I'm guessing that yeah, it's something to do with Battlenet being down for maintenance atm.

I'm getting random crashes with the game when i alt tab and sometimes it just crashes

Annoying, accounts for easily 10-15 of my 1v1 losses.

Alt tabbing from any game is usually a nono, right? Just avoid it!

Works no problem for me. It's a big nono for me if you can't alt-tab from a game

Yeah its a pretty big deal for me if you cant alt tab considering I like to do like 20 things whilst in a game : /

Sarcasm detector just exploded! I just find it handy to alt-tab to irc rather then start the whole game up every time.

i like alt+tab cos on tuesday nights when we have the irc league, its really handy to quick alt tab when a game is over etc

have you tried running the game in fullscreen windowed mode?
makes alt tabbing out alot easier and quicker

O sorry if that was mis-interpreted I wasnt being sarcy or anything, I genuinely freak if a game cant alt tab.

Like modern warfare 2, freaks me out big time! :)
