I cant find any thread for this years run (feel free to delete this if there is!) although looking at thread for last years it seems a well run event.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055673630&highlight=waterford+half+marathon

€22 is great value for a half compared to some others i was looking at. I assume this is running the same route as last year? I tell myself that I would probably prefer not running back over the same route but once im running I find I could probably be runnin anywhere as long as i get to the finish line! Finishing on a race track will be something different i suppose. Negative for me is the extra .35miles, as if 13.1 isnt enough! Only passed through waterford once before so will be able to make a weekend out of it with the other half. Anyone else doing this?

Hope to do this too. If it's of any use to you, the Tower Hotel had a special offer on rooms for competitors last year, so you could make a nice weekend of it with your girlfriend.

Route wise, it's a pretty flat run, and got great reviews last year. €22 is fantastic value (I didn't realise it was that price!).

Was a cracking race last year. It was the proper 13.1 distance, guess the mapping isnt following the exact curves in the road.

On the out and back nature of it, didn't bother me at all last year, its a loop that brings you to the turn back not a 180 on the road so you don't really notice it.

It is the official half marathon distance,no need to worry there.

    Was waiting for this thread..........

Missing Longford through injury and this is my next focus.

Sosa is it a flat route ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

There is no such thing as a totally flat route in Ireland,Elvis...but it is very fair.
The first 4m are flat,in around the city and out towards the tramore road, then you have 2 slight inclines over the next 2m...you have a nice downhill then which brings you to the turn back in the tramore road, flat again for 3m then about a mile of an incline but then the last 4m are downhill and flat with a nice finish on the track.

I personally could not imagine a better route for a PB in the country.

So its out to Tramore and back really ??? Does it finish where Waterford city play ?

Not a bad route at all, i've driven it many times !

I did the one ini Clontraf in July and it was VERY flat to be honest.

Looking forward to this as i like running in the winter cold !

    Thanks for starting this thread.

I'm hoping to do this. It will be my first Half Marathon. Only started running in Feb so talk of it being flat(ish) is helping my nerves!! I'm doing the Hal higdon 10 mile novice plan at the moment and hoping to switch to the Half Marathon Plan in October.

Is it a good idea to book accommodation for the night before? I'm coming from Dublin. I reckon I'd prefer to come home that evening and wake up in my own bed stiff and motionless the next day! What do people normally do?

It means we still have our Saturday night of the weekend. If it was the Sunday, the whole weekend would be ruined!! :D

Says you can on the runireland site, €30 on the day or €22 in advance.

I had the email address of the person dealing with queries & they confirmed you can enter up to 10am on the day.

Anyone on here thinking of doing this? Seriously thinking of it now, last time I 'raced' properly was the Dublin half last year so I'm overdue putting in a proper performance in a race. Date is almost perfect for me too, couple of weeks errr...rest type activities before launching into a HM plan.

Yeah I have been targetting this one aswell. I'll be able to go all out at it, i held a bit back at Enniscorthy due to marathom training.
Hopefully I can go sub 1:35

    What's the route like Sungod?

    http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/waterford/713621615501

its not bad RQ its basically from waterford(Reigonal Sports Centre or RSC, where waterford united play their home games)to tramore and back.
there is a slight interlude towards the city centre before heading out the tramore road, the profile would be undulating with a few drags but no major hills.
its not flat but could be PB course given the right weather conditions especially no wind coming back in the tramore road.
i cant compare it with other halfs as its the only half ive done.
what i can guarantee is is a well organised and marshalled accurate race.

    have i sold it yet?
did i mention im doing it?
its in the sunny south east?...ok its december but i'll see what i can do
    we have blaa's...mmmmmmmmmmm
well are ya in? are ya? are ya?:D

Will you have a nice cup of tea ready for me when I arrive in Waterford?

Seriously considering it, accommodation down there is pretty cheap so it would be easy enough to sort it all out. Only drawback is my sister is due on the 13th and it wouldn't look very good for me to be pissing off to Waterford as she goes into labour with the first baby. Then again, I've never been very considerate, it would be silly to change the habit of a lifetime...

New motorway open so it's even quicker to get from Dublin to Waterford or
back to Dublin if you need to get there quickly!!

she'll need the rest after the baby is born or before to keep all the energy for labour ! i think you would be overly considerate to register , speaking as a mother of two ;)

Never raced anything other than schools cross country, but i run a good bit for fitness, so i'm thinking of going for this . . .what i generally run is just 10km in 40mins, just for fitness but this is only 20 mins away for me so i might go for it . . .how long would i need to be training hard for it??

I'm seriously considering signing up to this one, it will be my first half marathon and get to go home for the weekend and still have my saturday night.

I'm in. Not training specifically for it though, it will just replace a usual LSR. Just figured my one and only Half of 1:53 is due an update

And you haven't even mentioned those fabulous home-made cookies that were on offer after the race. I (unashamedly) took 3, they were so nice.

Count me in for this one too ;).
Nice wooly hat in goody bag which is nice as the quality of the running tops being given in most goody bags is dodgy at best :(.

Im doing this one also. It will be fair chilly out I'd say! I'll also be a HM debutante btw, it's comforting to see I'm not the only one!

I hope to get to Waterford again this year, a bit of a hike from the west but well worth it in my opinion. Last year's half was as enjoyable and as well-organised a race as I have run, and the cookies/coffee/sandwiches afterwards were great!
