Rib Injury

    Hi Guys,

A few months back I hurt my left side while playing sports. When I went to the doctor he sent me for scans and later told me I had a costochondral separation. Basically I tore all the cartilage between some of my ribs.

TBH the pain was pretty bad while playing sports so I was glad when he insisted on me taking it easy for the next few weeks. I told him I didn't want any painkillers so he gave me an anti inflammatory gel. He told me that it will always be a problem as cartilage doesn't heal.

Okay, sorry for the long backstory.

My problem is that now I have started back into running and rugby again and the pain is still there. It isn't so bad but I don't want to make to cause it to hurt like it did before.

Any tips or suggestion for dealing with this?

And also I have found that my fitness level has drop considerably while I took it easy. Where I couldn't have ran 3 miles with ease before this injury, I know can only do a half mile if I am lucky before the pain starts to build up in my side.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

How long had you "rested" for?
Looks like you could do with a couple more weeks more than anything else to be honest.

Before say this, there is a general rule that medical advice is not given out in this forum, so this isnt medical advice just my experience it may not work in your case.

But my experience with a similar injury was that the time out from activity i took caused the area to stiffen up a lot and when i went back playing sports it took a while for it to loosen out and the pain to lessen but it did and now its gone.

Sorry MonkeyBone but I had to close this thread as it is agaisnt the posting rules of Boards.ie to seek or give what could be construed as medical advice, See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/faq.php?faq=bie_faq_guidelines#faq_bie_faq_guidelines_medicalpro

The best thing you can do is ask your doctor if it is ok to resume exercise and if he can recommend anything for the pain/soreness.

    Best Regards,

    M
