Ideas for Weight Gain shakes ?

    Hi guys,

I'm on a bulk up diet at the moment, and drink a home-made shake every day to help. I can't eat dairy so that rules out pretty much all the mass gainer supplements available. The shake I'm making at the moment is:

    200ml soya milk
    40g oats
    4 teaspoons of peanut butter
    1 teaspoon of honey
    1 banana
    20ml olive oil

It's fairly tasty and gets the job done but I'm looking for some other ideas as it can get boring drinking the same shake every day. Switching the banana for 100g of strawberries is nice too but they are expensive! Anything else I could add ?

    Thanks !

Get some frozen berries from Lidl or Aldi. You can use orange juice in there too.

I make one of these every morning.

    Banana
    Orange juice
    Greek style yoghurt
    Peanut butter
    Frozen berries
    Honey

You can get soya yoghurt too, horrible stuff but I would it's grand in a smoothie.

Thanks for the suggestion, I never thought mixing orange juice and banana would be nice but I'll give it a shot!

Are those frozen berries usually in the ice-cream section of aldi/lidl, or some other section?

Yeah I think the ice cream section or near the frozen fish etc., one of the freezers anyway.

    Hey guys,

I think if your trying to bulk you, try eating more calories then your OH, giving yourself more food for example, we all know that males need more calories then females, oh and mc donalds is a good idea also, Twirly fries, and normal fries have a huge calorie load.

    Hope that helps mate

That's some strange advice there johnbon1963 but I might take it on board, twirly fries are around 500 calories and so are large fries so that sounds like a good option. Also yes males need more calories than females, around 2500 compared to 2000, so whoever told you that is correct and knows what they're talking about.

    Ok...

Get peanut butter... Get spoon... Eat with spoon

Optional: large glass of full fat milk... Awesome...

Not half bad for you either!

Except if you read the OP the poster cannot eat dairy.

30H!3: try eating mixed nuts (not roasted or slated). 100g of mixed nuts is circa 600 calories.

Johnbon1963: Are you taking the p1$$? We try to promote healthy eating on this forum. Not sure twirly fries are even real potato, never mind healthy. There are losts of healthier options to help bulk other that fast food.

Double whopper from Burger king. Throw away the buns & enjoy.

Or you could throw away the whole lot and eat the polystyrene packing. Probably equal in nutritional value and just as tasty :D

Even cheap as chips battery farmed chicken breasts are superior to the majority of stuff that these food outlets serve. If anybody thinks that frozen burgers are made from prime cuts of meat, then they are living in la la land.

Honestly folks, it is not that expensive to eat healthily.

Who said anything about expense being an issue?

I wonder how they get all the protein and nutrition out of the beef before they give it to you?

Also, when did we evolve past being able to eat non-"prime" cuts of meat?

Who's we. If someone wants to know how to gain weight I'd send them straight to the nearest McD's. When it comes to food gaining weight is easy, forget protein, forget fats, just eat more and there's no easier calories than a double quarter pounder meal with a milkshake and a sundae.

When it comes to weight gain calories>>>nutritional value.

The only stipulation required to state that a product is 100% pure beef is that all the ingredients come off a cow. Did you ever see how "Chicken" nuggets are made?

Don't have to bother taking the protein and nutrition out of something if there is not that much there to begin with ;)

Frozen burgers are mainly skin, cartilage, connective tissues and fat.

    Chicken nuggets are skin.

Give me a homemade burger any day.

For me personally I don't believe in the See food diet. I don't see the sense in eating all around you just to increase a figure on a scales. I would want lean mass gain as opposed to simply weight gain.

Last year I gained 14lb over 11 months. Little over 1lb/month. Not the quickets gain I grant you. But I went from 11st 2 @14 % BF to 12st 4 @12% BF. No going on a big cut to get rid of all the fat weight as I didn't gain much/any.

Also the rule I follow regards food is that if my grnadparents would not recognise it as food, then I don't eat it.

Of course we are all different, If someone wants to get the calories from cream buns or drinking gallons of vegetable oil, well that's their choice. Each to their own

    Best Regards,

    M

    Seriously for a second though.
If it came from a cow its edible, I don't know where we became such pussies about our food but we survived long enough by eating ALL the cow.
What do you think off-cuts are made of anyway?

Are people manufacturing cows from plastic now?

Just because it looks messy when its made, does not mean its not edible.
Your grandparents probably ate the stuff that goes into burgers.

That's fair enough, that's your choice, I just thought using "we" to speak for a public forum and put your own opinion across was a little much. Either way works and if someone finds it hard to gain weight I'd say just eat more, worry about the details when your closer to where you want to be.

Last year I also put on a stone, I ate lots, including fruit, veg, lots of milk, pasta, lean meats and a good bit of fast food. I put on little fat nothing to be worried about and now I'm a little leaner at the same weight without cutting either, I just lost some fat as I continued to train hard with a normal diet.

There's nothing wrong with going by the scales either, if you compete in weight divisions then you better be checking the scales. If you just want to look a certain way then judge yourself by appearance it doesn't always have to be one way or the other.

To be fair a lot processed meat includes pieces of bone, claws, pretty much whatever you can get away with. If you check ingredients things like chicken in breadcrumbs, a lot of the time your not getting a whole lot of chicken either.

Had some homemade burgers yesterday, they are so delicious.

My mate has a lucrative business exporting chicken feet to eastern asia for human consumption.

Raw Fish Eyes are a polynesian delicacy.

Just because its not steak/chicken breast, doesn't mean its not edible.

In fairness, it's not a matter of whether its edible or not. Why in gods name would you spend money on offal when you can spend the same money on lean cuts? There is **** all protein in a claw, kneecap, ear or whatever random bit of animal is in a frozen burger.

You want to eat offal? Grand, go buy some liver, kidneys, tongue or heart. At least you know what you're getting. Plus it's tasty.

Not saying it's inedible just that you can't be sure if your getting what your think you are.

Just so I'm not completely killing the thread....

If you have a good Asian Grocers around you can get cartons of good quality coconut milk relatively cheap. Less than 2 Euro a litre IIRC. Less english on the package the better.

IMO it would be better than Soya milk, due to the lower levels of grossness.

Thanks for your reply, anyway it just so happens I buy and consume a lot of coconut milk! Chaokoh brand mainly and some other one that is 82%, I use it in cooking but have tried drinking it before and it's actually not that nice on it's own.. whereas with soya milk I have been drinking that for years now and become used to the taste. Rice and almond milk are other good alternatives too.

    Cool.
I was suggesting it as an ingredient in your shakes though.

I've never tried it so would want to suggest a brand, but any shop I've bought from has sold it (although I don't live in Ireland at the mo)
check out some of the online shops listed in the supps thread, myprotein.co.uk should stock it

to OP, when you say you can't eat dairy is it because you are allergic to dairy? or because you're lactose intolerant?
Dairy allergy is quite rare (if you're northern European descent) and if you are just lactose intolerant then that shouldn't prevent you from taking whey protein (quality whey isolate doesn't contain lactose). Also, you can drink lactaid milk if it's the lactose that is the problem.
If your issue is with a dairy allergy, you should try goats milk.
As another option, you can get variety of alternative protein powders from myprotein.co.uk (rice, egg etc) and these could be useful as an addition to your shakes.

Personally I tend to avoid soy based protein/milk because there are unresolved concerns about phytoestrogens (they function like oestrogen and are not ideal for men). Also soy products = bye bye Amazon :(

A nice recipe for a gainer is:
Oat flour + coconut milk + pineapple juice + unflavoured protein powder
It tastes like a piña colada :)

In reference to the discussion on processed meat. Yes, there are all kinds of mechanically recovered meats in some products. There are also plenty of products that mention the beef/chicken origin as being from prime cuts/breast etc. Check your labels. But from a nutritional point of view it comes down to protein, fat and carbs. Just because the protein is mostly connective tissue (collagen) doesn't change the fact that it is protein that your body will break down and use just as effectively as if it were muscle.
Besides BK double whopper is tasty and the meat is Irish :)

I actually considered that whey isolate might not be an issue, but wasn't sure of the facts so left it out. Thanks for clearing it up.
