How would one go about getting a personal trainer and how much would you expect to pay?

Do you have to join the gym before you can get the personal trainer?

I'm near the Carlisle gym so was thinking of going there?

    Hi There

There are a few reputable personal trainers and sports/athletics coaches who regularly post on this forum. If you give your general location, folks may be able to suggest one in and around your area who you might like to contact.

Lots or personal trainers work privately, outside of a gym, but the thing is to find a good one who can get you the results you require. For this, word of mouth is the best.

I wouldn't be exactly sure, but personally I would think that you would pay anywhere between €70-€100 per 1 hour session, though I could be well wide of the mark. Also this is something that should be discussed between you and your trainer.

Mod hat on now: Please do not post the actual charges for any PT (whether they post on here or not) on an open forum!!!
    Mod hat off.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Best Regards,

    M

You'll pay anything in the region of 60-100Eur per session for a decent one. Whether or not you have to join a gym depends on the trainers agreement with the gym, but usually if it isn't their own gym/studio then you'll have to join to work out there, one exception being Transform who works out of Crossfit Ireland.

Well I live around Terenure, would be happy if anyone got in contact with me. I'm pretty much a fitness novice though.

Going down this route due to severe lack of willpower to do it myself

I saw Carlisle were doing 6 1 hour sessions for €125 somewhere, but Im guessing that it wouldnt be as good as it sounds.

    Hi There

Well on the south side of Dublin, two reputable Personal trainers that I know of are

    • Dominic Munnelly, Aka Transform (who posts on here)
    • Damien Maher (writes for the Indo)
Both of these guys are based in the Sandyford Industrial Estate. Transform works out of the Crossfit Ireland premises AFAIK and Damien Maher has his own fitness studio.

    Transforms Site is http://www.thetransformationcatalyst.com/personal.php
    Damien Maher's site is http://www.bfit4life.ie/index.html

Both PT's contact details can be found on their site and of course Transform could also be contacted via PM from this forum. Both of these guys have long lists of clients who have and continue to reach the goals, and both promote changing to a more healthy lifestyle rather than a quick fix to get to a target weight and then let you go back to your old ways.

These are the only reputable PT's on Dublin's south side, other may have other recommendations. I would advise having a chat with a couple of them and picking who you feel most comfortable with.

    Best Regards,

    M

Looking for personal trainers who would like to rent a space in a studio, the rates approx €250 per month and for this you will have unlimited access to a small gym for your usage. Premises is located on the south side of Dublin.

If interested please let me know

Must be an awful small space if you are only looking for that much. I have a place (2000sq feet) and €250 would not even get you part time renting space at mine (in Galway as well not even Dublin!). Ridiculously good offer if the place is anyway decent

Seems the going rate at the moment around Galway but there is less and less trainers around now. I still charge €60 for one off sessions but give deals that would reduce it to around 35/40.
I know a few trainers that are charging €15 which is ridiculous imo and actually demeans the business a little bit but I suppose they are just trying to survive at the moment

I'm just curious as to why you think charging €15 per session demeans the business. Surely by having an affordable rate woule have a lot more people inclined to go and get fit. Cant see how it hurts. I pay $25 where I am. I go 4 times a week and have done since August. If it cost $80 or something I would never be able to afford it and would still be unfit.

If a personal trainer has to hold your hand everytime you go to the gym, then they aren't doing a very good job

Not everyone wants to learn or be taught. Some people just want to go in with zero thought and be walked thru a session.

At the beginning thats fine, but not so great if they can't go to the gym at all without their trainer holding their hand. Having to pay 35 euro 3/4 times a week just to train.

Why not so great? If they have the means there is nothing wrong with having a personal trainer to guide them through all their sessions. Life doesn't have be done on your own and nearly all those successful people will say they have someone else there with them supporting, motivating and guiding them

The reality is that some people just want results and aren't concerned with that 'how's and why's. They just want to pay to be told what to do to get a better body, and it's a shame they don't have more of an interest, but that's their preogative.

G86: I get what you mean, I just meant from a money point of view, paying a PT every time you train will be beyond the average person. However it would be good to see your PT once a week and they could help organise your training.
Meh I want a personal cook, would be the best thing ever

    G86 and JJayoo,
Having a personal trainer doesn't have to be expensive (to you) and I know of a few that work around peoples budgets. It's great to be able to go to the gym and train yourself and feel super motivated and know every lift is dead on perfect each time but not everyone can do that and seek assistance from qualified people to help with the above.

Here you go, how to get a personal cook :)

Be careful what you wish for. As probably the most internet famous person on the planet, Charlie Sheen is both all the way there and not there at all!

1st - decide what you want, what you are willing to pay, are you willing to travel, do you want to be tied to having a PT in 1 gym
2nd - meet with local PTs, use boards, use google, use the yellow pages
3rd - interview them, see who meets your needs, who is going to help you get your goals, who will force you to get your goals, who would you like to spend time with
4th - take your choice down to 2 or 3 and re-interview them
    5th - make your choice

PTs sometimes are no more than glorified jocks. PTs sometimes can be absolutely fantastic at what they do.

You are going to be paying these guys €50 - 80 per hour (in Dublin). Thats your hard earned money. Make sure you get what you want rather than what they are willing to give.
If you were going to get your house decorated, you would get more than 1 quote before giving the cowboy builder down the street the job.

Have some fun, because at the end of the day, you are paying their wages. So interview them.

Training with a PT 3/4 times a week isn't having them 'holding your hand'.
If you are serious about working out, surely you know that you need to challenge your body and change up your routine.
I could meet with a PT for a couple of sessions, learn some squats, lifts etc and stop with the PT. Now that I've learned a couple of things I go to the gym 3/4 times a week on my own and repeat the same sequence of exercises for the next few months.
Result: not much because my body has become used to the exercise and doesn't progress.

    Sometimes thinking before typing helps.

Yeah exactly, cos a few weeks doing the same exercises aren't of any benefit.

I can highly recommend the physio (Leo) from Irishfit.ie.

I recently looked into private training sessions after good few years of failed attempts to achieve the fitness level I would like to. I kept overdoing it, doing it wrong or getting sick and it’s frustrating when you put so much time and energy into it.

Few weeks ago I went for gait & injury assessment in Irishfit and I am impressed by the service they offer. Few days after the assessment we had a training session and we went over the exercise plan, he also gave me the plan with pictures, description and links for videos for each exercise – great for referring to if in doubt. He designed the plan to suit my needs, the equipment I already have at home (gym ball, dumbbells, step that can be used as bench). I am to come back to them in another 3 weeks (6 week total), and I hope he will continue making training plans for me – it’s great to have someone so knowledgeable to look after your training needs.

A good trainer that takes off the guesswork, can work with the needs and time you have is well worth paying for. The way I look at it – it saves me money, time, and disappointments.

I hope they will continue doing plans for me but if they don’t, I will definitely look of getting a private trainer to work with. I think paying for a plan once every 4 or 8 weeks, is well worth the money! I regret not searching for one sooner.

I won't discuss what I was charged, but for the time he spend with me and without me to make the workout plan - bargain! I had to contact Leo with questions few times since - response is quick and informative.

Someone here recommended Damien Maher - I read his articles in Irish Independend, good read.

edited to add - and I wouldn't go to a gym only because it's close to be honest. I tried the gym near work and their trainer. Her program was all over the place, she wasn't at all able to adequate assess my fitness level, the workout was long and felt random. She did show me exercise well – but wasn’t able to put together suitable routine.

(few weeks of same exercise, are better then no exercise or the wrong exercise!)
