I'm new here but this place seems to be riddled with it.

    "Himself"

    "The Other Half"

    GTFO.

    jealous much?

It's just easier to use abbreviations.

    My OH thinks so anyway.

Happily in a relationship, not jealous at all :)

Often laugh at these terms with her.

I fúcking hate it. Despise it. Fúcking loathe it.

This may or may not be related to recent personal events.

    Still. Cúnts.

'Partner' is just as bad.

'Partner' is just about acceptable if you're gay.

OH is flat-out unacceptable, and borderline offensive.

I never really gave it much thought op.

Just thought about it there and nope, i don't hate it. It doesn't affect my life in any way.

If I was going to start a thread about things i hated, it would be about overpriced alcohol and picky women.

It's not a yin-yang type deal really in our house.

I don't particularly like it but find it tolerable. What's utterly moronic is "DH" (darling or dear husband), "DS" (son), "DD" (daughter). I've never seen "DW" because no man in his right mind would use that abbreviation.

"Myself and "DH" (not "my DH", just "DH") have decided to build an extension" - huh?! Wtf?! Stop pretending to yourself that others use/are familiar with such gobsh1tery which includes using a bra-cup size to denote your daughter and games console to denote your son!

    All terms for your "other half" are pretty sad... when you're "courting" you have a choice of;

-boy/girlfriend (which is the only good one, but not great if you are over 25 as it sounds a bit childish)

    - other half (sh*t, as the OP pointed out)

    - better half (a lame attempt at making "other half" sound funny)

    - partner (what? business partner? partner in crime?)

    - f*ck buddy (too much information)

Maybe, that's why people get married - "husband" or "wife" is so much simpler.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Apparently they're mostly to be found on yummy mummy websites, but occasionally they pop up here - not on AH though.

Nice summation of the situation there StarBelgrade.

Here's an idea. Let's just refer to them as my "Ciaran" or my "Aine".

Christ, yes! "OH" is mildly annoying, but anyone who describes their husband/son/daughter as DH/DS/DD is an "FC".

Similarly, whenever I see someone referring (in text) to his wife/partner/whatever as "the missus" or "herself", I automatically dismiss that person as a bit of an idiot.

I once used 'husband' on one of those sites and I was advised in a bitchy way that they didn't use that term (husband), it was 'DH' or 'H" or 'SO' only. Bunch of nasty whiners anyway, I didn't hang around.

I don't care for OH either but I've used it on occasion when I don't know if the poster is married or not.

And here I think is the sole reason some people have problems with these terms.

The more of these daft acronyms I hear, the more acceptable 'partner' gets.

Lol - so people in relationships wouldn't have a problem with them? They sound and read unfeasibly lame is all.

I don't think so. I mean, somebody could spam the place with cheerful photos of themselves and their happy families, etc, and I honestly wouldn't bat an eyelid... until they start throwing the cringe-worthy pet names around. Urgh.

Same for me. Actually love seeing mates' kids and family photos on facebook, but if they start with that OH ****e I'll hide their feed instantly.

    I'LL HIDE YOUR FCUKIN FEED.

    What the f*ck?!?!

My wife has called me lots of things.... most of them, caring & loving words. Some of them, I would not care to repeat & a lot of them involved expletives, but they were deservedly so at the time.

Either way, I love her deeply & would do anything for her & would defend & protect her, to within an inch of my life. And I would never, ever do anything to purposely harm her.

However, if she ever referred to me as 'Darling / Dear Husband', I would probably punch her in the face & leave her for dead.

    :D

No, I don't think so, just a bunch of bitches who thought they owned a board and had their own rules that newbs were expected to follow. Not sure if I should say which one, but it's American.

I use Oh because it's the least offensive to me.

This DH DD DS business is just wrong.

To quote an earlier rant I had

Why the fcuk do some women post on message boards about their DH (Dear Husband) DD (Daughter) DS (Son)

What the hell?? You can't seriously be all sappy about them all the fcuking time!

Would you still call them that when the poilce bring your DS home for attempted arson , your DD catches gonorrhea, and you discover your DH is riding the secretary.

    FFS!

I have a dilemma, I don't know whether DH or "me bird" irritates me more...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,458 ✭✭✭CathyMoran

Am guilty of using the term "hubby" at times...for our son I just use the term "son"...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

Dont really get whats wrong with OH tbh... like what are ya supposed to say? As someone else pointed out, boy/girlfriend can sound a lil kiddy-ish, partner is a term i would associate with formality/gay couples and otherwise youre kinda stuck with sh*ite like 'me fella' / 'me bird' and if anybody called me their 'mott' or whatever that is I would be a lot more pished off than em sayin OH :)

Give me a decent alternative and I wil stop saying OH :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭D-Generate

I simply hate the DS, DD and DH thing. So completely and utterly stupid. Why do they have to be prefixed by an adjective.

I don't mind OH so much but its not for me. Nothing better than the old doll or the missus, ball and chain, herself, etc. Purely used because the old doll hates them.
