BMI 40.1, seriously need to lose weight.

I weighed myself today (haven't done so in a long long time), did the calculation and it turns out that I have a BMI of 40.1 (Height = 179.9cm (5'9" inches), weight = 129kg (285.8 pounds)). I'm a 19 y/o man and when I realised that with this BMI it meant I was 'severely obese' (after doing a quick investigation online) I was really taken aback, I mean I always thought that 'severely obese' people were the ones who literally couldn't walk (thus was my ignorance until now). An article I read said that if you have a BMI of 40 or above then the average failure rate for non-surgical methods of weight loss reaches 100%. This really blew me away; not only would it be hard for me to lose weight but I could be dead before I reach the age of 40.

Anyway, that's the background. I really don't want to take the surgical root, so can anyone give me advice on how I can lose weight in a conventional manner. Like how much exercise I should do a day so that I won't put pressure on my heart., etc..?

    Thanks!!

My guess would be that your diet is not good, you do eat a lot and snack a lot, as well get very little exercise.

Sort out your diet you need to eat healthy, read the stickys at the the top of the forum.
In order to lose weight, you will have to be in a calorie deficit i.e. burning more calories than you take in.
The website fitday.com is very useful as you can keep a food diary on it and keep track of your nutrient and calorie intake.
For exercise, due to your weight, it would be important not to do too much too soon as it can put excessive stress on your knees particularly. Something like a crosstrainer or an exercise bike would be very good in this case as it takes pressure off the knees.

    Start small and constantly improve.

As an aside, many people see themselves the way you used to, they see the pictures of the morbidly obese people who have documentaries made about them and tell themselves that they arent as bad as them.

Start off slow and buid up your work capacity in terms of exercises and try to simply cut back on what you eat for the moment. Worry about the harder stuff after you get into a proper eating and exercise routine.

Good advice above, you got to remember that it is not impossible to lose the wait and try and put the surgery thing out of your mind.
I really think you should consult a doctor first before attempting serious exercise.
Start of with a bit of brisk walking and write down everything that you eat for a week.
Do some general research on the net on correct foods to eat and try and steer clear of processed foods,my theory if it was not around 1000 yrs ago check the label for food ingredients.
If you are able to join a gym in the next couple of weeks this is where you will be able to attack the weight issue and make ground towards a healthy physique.
Your young enough now to make these changes and limit the damage,I wish you the best of luck and do not fret about it as the weight can come off.

    Hi Killer Pigeon,

    some points that might help:
    • Set some short term goals: by next saturday lose that 5.8lbs
    • Medium goal of Friday the 27th August, 275lbs. I think you could hit 270. You've realised that you need to change things so thats the start.
    • By Christmas, I'll be 250lbs.
    • Get a small notepad today and record everything you eat or drink, no cheating, you'll be less inclined to snack on unhealty items if you have to record it.
    • Not sure on your work situation but every lunch time go out for a walk, nothin fancy, but a 60 minute light walk over the course of a week will make a difference.
    • All the exercise in the world won't help if what your eating is counteracting any good.
    • You only 19 so it's a great age to turn things around.
    • If your serious about getting healthy, then create an account at bodybuilding.com where you can record your stats, and after a while you can look back and see your achievements.
    • D'ont be afraid of the weighting scales.

    Best of luck.

Some other great advice I heard from an interview with Jim Wendler is simply get a few of you're favourite albums, pick one a day and simply go walking till the album is over. That's roughly 40-60 mins and I can guarantee you won't even notice it go by.

Firstly I'd get a full medical from a doctor including bloods just in case theres any underlying conditions. Check that your heart is ok the begin an exercise routine.

Plan what you want, as per the previous post on goals start reading this subject straight away. Your journey is not a remote control click away but months and months and probably a few years. Only well defined goals for the short medium and long term will keep you focussed and on the right path.

At the same time learn everything you can about nutrition. Start with the stickies here.

Gently introduce your body to exercise. Cardio to strengthen your heart, the most important muscle in your body. consistency and gradually building up the time and intensity. If you can walk fast for a few minutes then great, do that for a few weeks and then 5minutes and then....

Resistence training. start with a simple whole body work out at home. get some water bottles for weights and spend 20-30mins every other day doing this. Find a routine on the internet consisting of around 10 different exercises that wotk the legs, core, arms, chest and back.

Log your progress once every two weeks.

    Read your goals every day.....

If things are done right, then it won't take that long, at that weight, the first 2-3 stone come off at a lightening quick rate, if things are done right, plus he's only 19 which will aid him even further. It's been done in 4-5 months..

True and if so then great but the human body never ceases to amaze me. My wife has been eating clean and working hard at the gym for months and put on weight. Every way you look at it it's not possible, underlying medical issues. Tricky little things, like traditional nederlands shoes 'sabot' making a mess of conventional wisdom.

Why do people even bother to make that point when it's obvious he's not carrying a lot of muscle?
