    Afternoon all,

The good lady wife has had a sore back/sholder for the past 2 weeks. It started on a road trip when she feeel asleep in the car in a bad position.

Any way, after being in bits she finally gave in and went to see some one. I said a physiotherapist, but she went for acupuncture. Chines medicine :(

They have told her she has a twisted vertebrae and need to go back to them again on Monday and it could take many sessions!

Just sounds a bit hocus pocus to me.

Any one else dealt with acupuncturist for back related problems.

    Cheers,

    Pip

    Sorry mods if wrong place..

I have been to an osteopath who does acupuncture.
It can help, although the success he has had with the needles has usually been with local & acute muscle problems. It worked wonders on some elbow and shin trouble I was having.

And spinal/shoulder problems I have had have usually reacted better to manipulation which is more like what a Physio/Osteopath would do.
A chiropractor* would also do such manipulations.

These manipulations may need to be repeated a few times before they get things properly sorted.

Beyond that not really much help I can give.

*Please don't anyone go off on one about chiropractors.

Accupuncture claims to be able to remedy many ailments. For the majority of these claims the scientific evidence suggests that it does no better than placebo.

There is a small amount of evidence that it works for some nausea and lower back pain, although conventional treatments such as anti-nausea medication and anti-inflammatory drugs are as effective and much much cheaper.

Rest and ibuprofen if it is not serious would be my call (I am not a medical professional)

A visit to your GP or a qualified physiotherapist if it persists.

I feel compelled to go off on one........

Your wife should not consider spinal manipulation (chiropractic) as the poster above suggests.

Its up to people to make up their own mind, but I would point out that
    a) Chartered Physiotherapists use Manipulation, as do osteopaths so its not just chiropractors.
    b) Thats an opinion piece and as such an awful source.

I have seen professional golfers getting on the fly manipulation on the course.
    Never seen one die though.

Needless to say, Manipulation is not necessarily chiropractic.

Just had my back "cracked" by a physio this morning. Though when I say "cracked" it was more like she was moving me through my range of motion and there was a pop, and not the high velocity low amplitude (or whatever it's called) style manipulation that chiro uses. But I'm getting off topic...

I think you should try and get your wife to see a physio. It's been my experience that they usually take a look at the problem, then give you a set of exercises and tell you to call them if it doesn't improve, instead of booking you in for another 6 appointments straight away (though this does sometimes happen).

If she goes to the physio and gets a second opinion she can then decide which course of treatment she wants to go with.

Cheers for the replies and feed back.

I've just spoke with a highly recommended Physio and talked to him about it. Now got her booked in for tomorrow afternoon, and listen to someone I trust. See what their take is.

Poor wife is now down thinking her back is fcuk'ed for life.... Nothing like scare tactics!! of course, they may well be right about the twisted vertebra, in which case I shall eat my words.

Well the guy she saw yesterday was outstanding. An hour session went on for hour and half, and at €55, was well placed.

He said the twister vertebra was a load of bull. So I shall be popping to see our my Chinese friends on Monday and getting the €75 back!! one I hate people ripping off, and two, they scared the sh*t out of my wife making her think she had permanent problems.

So, although she was a little tender last night. She has got from 20%movment to around 85%. Job well done.

    Thanks for the replies.

If any one need the number of the guy (he's in BlackRock) pm me.

    Cheers,
