Decoding a Region DVD Player

Not entirely sure if this is the right place to post (Mods, feel free to move).

Anyhow, I got a few dvd's in Canada and they r Region 1 coded. My dvd player wont play them as it is a Region 2 dvd player. The reason I bought them in Canada was because they were A LOT cheaper over there and the guy in HMV said that there is a way of decoding a Region 2 dvd player to a Region 0. He said something about the serial number of the dvd player and getting a code from the dvd player brand website (its a Sony).

    Any help would be great.

There is a way of doing it that requires some messing with software, but this is the easiest way...
To use this hack you will need a one for all URC - 7555 (€13.45 Power city)

First set up remote to control player:

    1. Press DVD device button on remote
    2. Press and hold Magic button and wait for double blink
    3. Enter device code 0533

Now we need to program Macro Buttons A-E with the following codes, read below for instructions:

    A - 189
    B - 255
    C - 095
    D - 221
    E - 079

This is how you program those numbers into the Marco Buttons:

    1. Press and hold Magic button until double blink
    2. Press 994.
    3. Briefly press Magic button (don't hold).
    4. Enter 3 digit code from list above.
    5. Press appropriate Colour button to store it.
    6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 until all 5 Macro Buttons programmed.

    Re-program the player:
    1. Remove any disk in player, put player on standby.
    2. Press Macro Buttons A,B,C,D,E in sequence - SUCCESS is displayed on DVD player and player starts up.
    3. Press Macro Buttons A,B,C,D,E in sequence again - player shuts down (and may restart again) and you're done!

If it's region unlocked it won't matter

Region locks only effect the region not the tv system.

Having said all that the op probably has nothing to worry about. Most newish/dearish tvs can play NTSC
