Dublin area - looking for a good pro for lessons

Sorry, another one of these threads.

I got a lesson from my club pro a few weeks ago, and unfortunately what he's shown me just isn't working, so I'm going to go somewhere else. I live in North Dublin so that area would be ideal, but if there are particularly good coaches in South Dublin I'd drive over. Any recommendations appreciated, thanks.

I go to Michael Allen, in Leopardstown driving range - Puregolf. his top class, loads of recommendations and always booked up a week in advance... his on M50 for you......

Great, thanks. About what price are the lessons there?

I'd highly reccommend Michael Allen in L'Town aswell, I've just started golf this year and have had 2 lessons with him. Found him excellent...that said I've no previous experience of lessons!
€45 per half hour lesson, they did mention discount for booking a block of 4 and will let you bring along ANother if you want to split the 30mins between two.

Karl O'Donnell (Newlands GC) is pretty good, and unlike most club professionals was a really good player in his day

€45 for 30 mins ??? He wanna be top class for that money.

I use David Lewis out of greystones, he recently re opened greystones driving range and teach's from there. He is €35 per 30 mins and every lesson I have received lasts an hour for that money. Never watches the clock and always has lots of advice to help with what you have ! Always drops me a text to see how my game is and my results and just has a genuine interest for coaching !!

    Couldnt recommend him enough !!

Not a massive difference between 45 and 35 per Half hour...also not a clock watcher but is booked out solid (i read into that as being a good sign) so cannot let it spill over too much.
Anyway, was asked my advice and thats who i'd reccommend.

Just stating I get the hour every time for 35. Nor was I criticising but its expensive in my book. Glad you find him excellent !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭GorHugh

I'd recommend Krishna Padayachee in the ward golf centre on the old ashbourne rd , top drawer coach , He sas got me down from 21 to 17 with 1 lesson , Heading back next week for another .

What i wud say though as pro/coach is only as good as the hard work and practice you put in after the lessons....

Kevin Foy up in Stepaside Driving Range 35 euro in half hour. Very good coach who doesn't go into technical detail just gives you simple language.

yeah i think we can all work out the difference,it is expensive though, don't know the man but i'd say the ladies up in Lep keep him booked out handy enough, the place is swarming with them, that said i'm not dissing him as a coach

They are mainly on the course! Mick is well known all around south Dublin, excellent coach and a solid player too (so other pros have told me)... I have tried a few but he was the best so I stuck with him... 45 quid is not cheap but whats a tenner difference really, two pints?? His booked up because of his reputation and cathchment area...

I have lost 7 shots in past year under his coaching...18 to 11... he was recommneded to me by a 6 handicaper in work who swore by him.... so I'll leave it at that.....

    John Kelly in St Margarets.

More geared towards better players and expensive: e100 per hour. Widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the country and a good player too.

Also check out Anthony Martin or Karl Herbert at the Kinsealy Grange (in Portmarnock)

Got a lesson off David Lewis last Saturday, very nice bloke.
Has a good chat with ya about your game and where your at, smacked a few balls and then he gave me his advice, initially i wanted to correct a slicing with the driver which i had developed and asked if i wanted a quick fix or a more lasting solution.
He watched me smack a few irons which i hit well, but he explained i needed to change a few things to improve my game long term, so he changed my grip, stance ,posture and just about everything needed addressing the ball and explaining each change made.
I took to the changes very quickly but he tells ya it will hard work making such changes on the course and sticking at it is the key.
Showed me a video then of swing when i first hit a few and then with the changes he made , massive difference between the two from slouching over etc to a more professional looking setup very similar to that of Chris Woods.
He also said he would keep an eye on me when i visit the range as he is collecting baskets etc he will stop me and correct anything if neccessary without the need of another lesson although i will get another one anyway in a while after i adjust to new setup on the course and give him some feedback on it.
Money well spent anyway and off now to practice the changes :)

I used Sid Baldwin a few years ago. Used to be pro in Hollywood Lakes years back. I think he works out of GolfVision in Swords now. I dropped from 18 to 12 in 1 calendar year after 5 lessons from Sid.
I've also used Brian Boshell. Used to be pro in Hollywood Lakes till recently.
    Both are good coaches.

I would definitely second this recommendation. Krishna keeps things really simple (some coaches give you 15 things to remember in 30 minutes!). Very good rates too... think it's only 25 or 30 euro per half hour lesson or so. Just off the M50 finglas exit, so if you're Northside it should be handy enough.

Should mention Joey Murray in Hollystown too. V good.

I would recommend David Mortimer in GUI Acadamey. He keeps things very simple and and turned me from someone who had a huge slice to a slight draw.

But no matter what pro you go to you really do have to practise hard. There are no shortcuts.

I couldn't hit the ball out of my way after my first few lessons as my head was full of technical thoughts on the course. This was soul destroying but David told me to believe in what he was showing me and it would work. I practised hard, and now I only think of the target when swinging as I trust my new swing and the improvment is unreal.

Pricewise he is reasonable as well. 6 half hour lessons are €200.

I have a lesson with David this evening and am very encouraged by your post as it sounds like the approach I would like from him. Thanks.

I would recommend Sue Bamford ex Ladies Tour Professional, works out of Roganstown and Elmgreen Driving range (087 0563412)

    35e for 30mins

Ive had various swing probelems over the years and she normally spots the issue quickly and gives me swing thoughts to correct them.
    good luck

Dave Kearney @ the grange is top draw! €60ish for 50 mins. coach to the Irish Ladies team as well so has good credentials, seriously worth a phone call

I've had a few lesson's from Conor Russell, the pro in Sutton. Fount him to be very good. Teaches in the old portmarnock driving range, so handy enough for you.

Neil Manchip up in Carton. Streets ahead of anyone else out there and well worth the extra few quid.

Bit of a sweeping statement, no ?

I've heard both good and not so good things about him from friends who have been to him. Mostly good though.

I honestly think with teachers that, in general, most pros will tell you broadly the same things and it tends to be the manner of communication that influences the pupils opinion. Also, for no apparent reason a pupil might happen to be timing the ball good on a given night and think the pro is great, or the timing might be completely off and he'll leave thinking "that guy's f--ked me up completely".

Also some people learn better by feel, some people need to have the technical stuff explained before they can grasp something. They'll automatically lean towards a pro who teaches in the way they like to learn.

Best advice for the Op is to certainly way up the opinions and try one or two of them out and see how you get on. One person's good pro is another's waster.

You obviously mix in small circle of people ,

I reported back here on a friend of mine who had a 1 hr lesson (including the video analysis) and a Full 18 hole playing lesson with BP done 2 weeks apart , He had nothing but good things to say and his game has improved no end .

    You are nothing but a G O B S H I T E stirrer ...

So, you having heard good things carries a greater weight how exactly?

There was a thread run regarding opinions on BP a few months ago and funnily enough there were more good comments left for then Bad , Far more then 5 people .

I played with the lad before and after the lessons ,there is a serious improvement in his game , coupled with the good feedback on the thread for BP , I would say your opinon is YOUR opinion and shudn't be shared in the tone it was ,

Mud sticks Lad , and no pro plying his trade be it good or bad or indifferent needs some stirrer coming on here and putting people off trying that pro out for themselves .

There was a thread ran on boards about BP and the consenus was he was a good coach/pro .. obviously not all comments were good , but a far larger share of the comments were good .

So that is a collective of opinions from boards and not just me .....

lads i think a thread like this is a no no,it's very competitive out there at the mo regarding lessons
this thread leaves it wide open to promote or diss any pro you might be in competition with or you don't like.
