Think you need to be further north than Ireland to see them. I know Norway is a good spot.
It'd be somethin i'd love to see, but you could be waiting, they aren't too reliable.

At this time of year, this part of the country, localised entirely within your kitchen?

    Can I see?

People used to be able to see them further south but it got further and further away, I know my granny has talked about seeing them here in Ireland years ago and their is that song about the lights in that Scottish town that I forget the name of.

No. Its more about weather conditions. My gf is from Minnesota in northern midwest usa and they get the northern lights regularly. Long brutal sub zero winters and they're the same latitude as northern france.

It's probably unlikely that it will be seen from Ireland although I did see it here years ago :)

Well tonight and tomorrow night is one of those solar events that could be similar to the times your gran experienced.

I saw the northern lights in Donegal a few years ago. Only green though, think it's more colourful the higher you go.

Why would it have anything to do with the weather ?

These are charged particles fired from the Sun, hitting the Earths magnetic field and being channelled down to the magnetic pole.
When they hit the upper atmosphere they react and cause the light show.

That's well above the weather systems.

The only weather it has anything to do with is space weather.

i suspect he is talking about weather in terms of viewing conditions. when you think about it the number of cloudless nights in ireland are very few, the number of cloudless nights in winter (best time to view the lights in this part of the world) are fewer again

    "Location: Dublin"

That's our word for you Dubs! :p

But yeah, I remember looking out the upstairs window at "the big glow" as we called it when I was younger. Must dash up to see if I can spot it again.

And you call them steamed hams despite the fact that they are quite obviously grilled.

I think the solar radiation is slowly killing the current hamster over at Boards Towers, been running slowly the last hour, will need replacing soon:p

I'd like clear or clear-ish skies tonight to get a view of this, would be awesome!

The state of the atmosphere at a given time and place, with respect to variables such as temperature, moisture, wind velocity, and barometric pressure.

    Known in Ireland as "rain".

Erm naw you can see them i think further north than 53 degrees and at best around 55 degrees which i am further north than.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,900 ✭✭✭InTheTrees

    Did you read the article?

The whole point is that this is an unusual event and the northern lights should be visible much further south.

I know they've been visible in Sligo before, not a spectacular lightshow but a green haze on the horizon which is cool in itself.

You won't see it anywhere near a town anyway, although you might see a rather spectacular orange streetlight glow

no - this is a special instance of it.. - there was a big eruption basically on the sun on sunday and the waves and stuff is really strong so it's going to be visible in ireland this time..

last time something like this happened it put the power grid down in quebec because of the really high dose of electromagnetic radiation...

that happened in 1989 so it's a very rare occurance this because the erruption has to be facing directly at earth for the waves to come to earth

Nice clear evening here. Hopefully I might see some northern lights tonight.

They were visible here many moons ago but people still talk about: "The night the borealis was in the sky" :)

I plan on going north sometime and seeing the aurora up close and personal.

I'm also a big fan of Philip Pullman so the thoughts of being able to see the lights here in Ireland gives me a fuzzy feeling inside.
