BSOD On XP Setup boot..

    Hi Guys,

    I'm stumped on this one.

    Booting XP setup disc in HP Pavilion and i'm getting a BSOD with stop code 0x0000007B. According to this it's something to do with the hard drive.

    Any idea on how to overcome this? The post I mentioned says that the hd could be failing but I doub't thats the case. Also, it says there could be a virus infection on the system. Don't think thats the case either but it's possible as the Vista install is riddled.

    Any suggestions here?

    clean install or upgrade / repair ?

    for xp/2000/nt I'd say you need hdd drivers , press F6 etc.
    software raid 0 ?

    I'm trying a clean install on a laptop with Vista currently installed.

    Do you think I need HD drivers? There's no option to press F6, I don't even get as far as an XP setup screen. At startup the screen is black for about 5 mins with the CD spinning then I just get the BSOD!

    I wonder is there anything else that I can do?

    For some reason I think there's a virus in the boot sector. Would CHKDSK /FIXMBR fix this? How do I get the prompt for that?

    EDIT: I'm half way through this thread. And it seems the solution is to change the storage settings to IDE. Since I don't have this option in the BIOS it seems I have to splitstream drivers to the XP install..is this the only solution..?
