Thinking of changing my car - a 06 1.4 corolla hatch petrol. Want to change to diesel cos doing more milage since moving house and want to save on tax.

Have been lookin at 08/09 Focus or Golf. Budget is 8 - 8.5k.

    Any advice?

Work out how long it takes to make €8K up in diesel and road tax savings and then think are there any other reasons why you want to change the car ;)

Was changing car anyway so figured I might as well change to diesel now.

A friend suggested a mazda 5? Not sure what they're like though, don't know anyone who own one

Not wishing to seem funny but I think you might struggle to get to an 08/09 with your budget, but good luck anyway! ;)

Regarding Mazda's, the 5 is a nice car in petrol guise (1.8) but they can be a little thirsty around town. I would avoid the diesel one though. There are known issues with that particular 2ltr engine in the Mazda 6, and personally, I wouldn't risk it.

    is 8-8.5k plus a trade in ?

Ya, budget does include trade in, garages i've been to are giving 7.5 - 8k for corolla.

Have seen a few posts here about Mazda so prob will avoid that one

As RoverJames said, work out how much you will actually save from road tax and cheaper diesel.

If you were upgrading anyway and considering a petrol or diesel then that would be different, you'd only be talking a couple of grand or only a few hundred quid (easily made up over a few years) but if you are spending 8k to 'save' money then you need to think about the 'savings' a bit more. Will you keep the car long enough to make the 8k savings?

For example, the price difference between my diesel car and the 'equivalent' (for want of a better word) petrol car in the range was only a few hundred pounds, therefore as I was going to be doing serious mileage, the diesel was definitely the best option in tax and fuel savings :) However, in your case, if you are only changing the car to try and save money then you aren't actually making any savings as far as I can see.

As i said before, was upgrading anyway.
I'm doing 35 mins each way to work and other running around too, reckon it's worth changing to diesel for savings on fuel. Constantly seem to be putting petrol in corolla. Drove hubby's 2.2 diesel for a while and was spending less in that

Well if you are upgrading anyway then you're fine and RoverJames' figure of 8.5k savings is not the right comparison to make.

Instead, work out how much more expensive the diesel car is to the petrol equivalent and how long it will take you to make a saving on your spend on tax and fuel :)
