Does anyone know has it been confirmed that Setanta have any Magners this season? Just weighing up my options with regards Sky, since you cant get S4C or BBC Wales on UPC.

I'm not sure if Setanta have any games to be honest.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/club/7813469/Celtic-Rugby-secure-improved-broadcast-deal-for-Magners-League-coverage.html

Seems as though you'll be fine with the provinces home games with RTE, TG4 and BBC NI but you'll need BBC Alba/Wales and S4C for the Scottish and Welsh home games

No info on the Italian matches though

Edit: Setanta have deferred coverage of the Magners
http://www.setantasport.ie/ just click on 'our sports' and it's says they have deferred coverage of Magners and live Top14

Get one of those free to view dishes costs about €100 and you will get all the BBCs and S4C free.

wixfjord, can you add channels manually on upc?

I have sky and done that a few times (including BBC2Wales). You can get the frequencies on the web.

    Think you mean Free-to-Air.

Best spending a bit more than €100 for a half decent set-up. Those cheap ones from Lidl/Aldi/B&Q were for the German market with system language set to English.

Ask as many questions as you want here OP

they'll be on RTÉ or TG4 I'd imagine, the deal means one broadcaster can take the feed from another, BBC NI will take the feed from RTÉ or TG4 when Ulster play the Irish provinces, same will happen with RTÉ or TG4 taking the feed for Irish away games off BBCw/S4C/BBC Alba or Sky Italia (just assuming they have the Italian rights, could be wrong though).

Is it time to start petitioning UPC to add S4C and BbC Wales?

Is it time to start petitioning UPC to add S4C and BBC Wales?

They never will because they only buy rights for the uk.

The easiest way to explain it is RTE cant go FTA (free to air) on satelite because people in the uk could then recieve it.

The problem with this is that say RTE buy the rights to the simpsons, they only pay for the rights to show it to 6 million people,if the uk were able to receieve it,up to 50m could and so the distributors lose money.

i.e bbc would pay x12 the amount that rte would pay for a tv show because of the audience base.

So if S4C were to go on upc then s4c would have to pay for the rights of an additional 6m viewers.

S4c can be viewed online as a last resort.

    Something like this
    http://satellite.ie/acatalog/Free_to_air__Freesat_Compatible_DIY_kit.html#aSatellite_20DIY

would allow you to get the channels, putting up the dish is a piece of piss.Loads of info on youtube and even videos on the site I listed.

That's all well and good for people who don't live in an apartment. S4C could go on UPC if the will is there. They broadcast mostly Welsh language programming so the rights would not be significantly expensive. If there was a demand for it the carriage fee UPC would have to pay should cover any additional rights. They already cover Ireland wrt satellite broadcasting, so the precedent is there. If the demand is there it can happen.

Hmmm. Not sure if ours is listed...

Either way, the parents went for NTL, and I'm too broke to pay for Sky. Ah well, pub it shall be. :pac:

Every game is available online on S4C player anyway so I don't see what the fuss is about.

Well not with that attitude it isn't. I've watched games in pubs on S4C, as already mentioned it's available to Ireland online (although doesn't look as good on a laptop screen beside a nice big screen tv) and available on satellite. What harm does firing off a few emails to UPC inquiring about it's availability do? What harm is there in getting other people to do the same? What is the worst that can happen, UPC inform the government that Ireland has a large number of Welsh speaking sleeper cells, using guerrilla tactics to expand their territory westwards. Well I've fired off an email asking them about the possibility of adding S4C, I'll let you know if I get any response. Have to go now though, a helicopter has just landed in the car park and a load of soldiers have jumped out of it and are running this way. Hmm, I don't recognise their uniform, the crest has a picture of a dragon with a line crossing it out. Anyone know where they are from? ;)

I already explained why it isnt available but you just rubished it.Waste your money on ringing up UPC if you want, its not going to happen because its a rights issue, also S4C is funded by the British government making it even more unlikely to happen.

People in Scotland and England on Virgin cable (UPC) equivalent cant even get it.
They pay for the rights for Wales only, people in the rest of the UK and Ireland can get it on Freesat because they cant lock it to wales only but they arent supposed to be watching it.

Yea its a pain in the arse. I still had to watch the games online even though I thought I'd get the bleedin channel.

My apologies if you thought I rubbished your comments, it wasn't my intention. I just dislike the attitude that when something is really unlikely to happen it's not worth trying. It is my experience that outside of in mathematics there are no hard and fast rules that can't be thrown out the window if there is a sniff of making a few quid out of it. It wont be as easy as calling UPC and suddenly it appears on my screen, but as I already said what is the harm?

Could they not lock by encrypting it and making it FTV with cards registered to Welsh addresses only able to receive it? Don't forget its available on Sky as well as Freesat.

yeah, and you don't even have to manually tune it in, Sky include it in the Irish EPG.

If it was meant to be Wales only, S4C Digidol would not appear on any EPG outside of Wales. But as we all know it does.

Thats because i think they have exclusive rights to the Welsh home games generally rather than exclusive rights to the Magners League in Wales

it also sees that Setanta will ahve deferred coverage of irish games and highlights of all games, which you may not get in the other channels

tbh I made most use of setanta through repeats rather than live, as I attend games

People seem to have short memories. The old analogue S4C (which broadcast a mix of Welsh programming in peak time and Channel 4 programmes off-peak) was widely carried on cable in Wicklow, Wexford, and Waterford in particular right into the 2000s. Local cable companies (and later CMI Cable) took it in preference to Channel 4 simply because they could recieve a far better S4C signal off-air than Channel 4, these being the days before satellite reception was possible. Irish Multichannel built a microwave network to relay Northern Ireland channels to its cable and MMDS head-end so I'd imagine it was dropped in favour of Channel 4 in those remaining towns it was available (which were Arklow, Rathnew, and Wicklow) after the formation of Chorus in 2000.

AFAIK Casey Cablevision in Dungarvan was still carrying analogue S4C up to recently. The channel closed at the end of March so I don't know if they have switched to Channel 4 or S4C Digital - I'd imagine they are now carrying Channel 4 however.

The relevant point of course is that S4C has been available on cable here before. Nothing to stop it being available on cable here again other than negotiating the rights issues and a carriage deal.

As to answer the OPs original question, Setanta (according to themselves) have highlights and delayed rights to the Magners' League from September.

no one else can broadcast those games live in UK or Ireland

S4C hasn't been on the Casey lineup for years.

I would be very surprised if RTÉ or TG4 couldn't show any on the Irish provinces if they were playing in Wales

Setanta could not show such games live either

as an example here are Munsters fixtures

go to any away game and note the channel that the games will be on

I don't know what you're talking about, Setanta did show the games from Wales involving Irish sides whether they were on S4C or BBCw.

As has been pointed out before, the broadcasters listed in the link on the Munster website or the ML website are merely the host broadcasters. Secondary broadcasters are not yet listed, which were mentioned in several articles once the rights deal was announced. RTÉ/TG4 can take the feed from BBCw or S4C for games in Wales and vice versa.

I wont be surprised just yet.

That is a list of the host broadcasters for each game. I remember the original press release stating that broadcasters can use the pictures from another. For example Scarlets v Munster, RTÉ or TG4 could use the S4C/BBC Wales pictures.

You're absolutely right. The host broadcaster is listed for certain matches but other broadcasters can show these matches. From ML website -

"TG4 will provide comprehensive coverage on each of the 22 Magners League weekends. Full match coverage and analysis each weekend will track the progress of the Irish provinces, home and away.
Match commentary will come from Gearóid Mac Donncha and Gary Mac Donncha, and there will be previews and full match coverage featuring all the latest enhancements , as well as half-time and post match analysis and interviews with players and coaches.
In addition to hosting live coverage from the grounds in Ireland, TG4’s rugby offering will also include the Irish provinces’ away matches.
TG4 is available nationwide on terrestrial television and on all other delivery platforms throughout Ireland (Channel 104 for UPC cable and Sky subscribers in the Republic) on channel 177 for Sky subscribers in Northern Ireland and on channel 877 for ntl: cable subscribers in Belfast."
