Mods, this app it so good that I feel it warrants a thread of it's own for now just till word gets around.

Telly Eireann is a new free app for the iPhone that puts all the programmes available on RTE's iPlayer into a single app.

Nothing official about it. Otherwise, it'd carry the broadcaster's logo and would likely be called the RTÉ Player app. Still... great little app :) RTÉ should take note!

Don't think that's possible. 4od runs off Flash.

Bah, phone needs to be on firmware 3.1.3 or higher. :(

Does it actually allow you to watch content on the RTE Player? How are they managing that if the Player is based around Flash?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

    Excellent.

    Thanks.

You can watch it. And I was wondering that too. Something converting it on the fly?

I wonder if RTÉ will get it taken down. Or follow O2 and get it on board and develop it as an official app.

The actual player is Flash, but I'm guessing the stream is H.264 so this app just provides the controls via the Apple Movie Player.

edit: Yup, Had a look and the content streams are MP4, flash is just used for the interface.

I don't see this lasting very long in the AppStore, RTÉ have had apps pulled before for using their RSS feeds.

    Works flawlessly over wi-fi on my 3GS 16gb iOS 4.1 :)

Apple don't allow video streaming over 3G unless you detect and provide a lower bandwidth version.
Since the author of this has no control over the source it will probably remain wifi only.

Looks like you need 4.0.1. Pity, it sounds great.
Oh well, I'll wait for the jailbreak, but RTE will have pulled it by then:(

Download it now, just don't sync it to your phone (or sync it but don't use it) until you're ready to update your OS.

This is a great idea. Often in the past when my phone was jailbroken I would come across an app tha was either at a reduced price or free but was designed for higher OS's.

Download through iTunes and have it for when you do upgrade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

I'd download it now while ye can, RTE will probably pull this soon as they wont have the rights to show the imported content on Mobile Devices so the content providers will want it gone.

Working great for me but geo-specific In Belfast. Will not function on iPad.

Am convinced that it's a tribute to Father Ted and "Telly Éireann" that appeared a few times on it.

would be nice if there was 4oD and bbc iPlayer alternatives as well though :)
