End of the road for Gillick?

is it the end of the road for Gillick? this year he failed in two major championships, World Indoors and European Championships, when much was expected of him. He's just turned 27 and is nearly past his prime as a sprinter. If he carries on, he'll be 29 in 2012 for the London Olympics and 31 for the next European Championships.

No way. He ran 44.7 this week. He will be flying come London. He is world class. Loads more to offer.

I'd say he defo has 1 more olympics and maybe 2 euros left.
Always did want to see what he'd be like over 800 ;)

    Definitely not!

It'll be interesting to see if he runs Euro indoors. And if he does, will he avoid trying to barge everyone off the track!

Its really hard to see where he goes from here, in the next couple of years I think he should maybe focus on running quick times at Diamond League races, and then to see what happens come the championships, can;t see him ever winning a World outdoor or Olympic medal. And the Borlees and Rooney will have European 400 running sown up for the next while, plus the Russian guy who beat him is only 20. He has been a pioneer for Irish 400m running over the last few years and hopefully his considerable achievements will inspire younger generations of Irish one lappers.

He has the ability to run a good hurdles. Gillick would need to see a shrink if he moved up to the 800. Why would he when he still can reach finals and compete whether on the flat or over the hurdles.

this thread really annoys me.Gillick is running faster than ever.irish record holder !!!
Ok he will be first to admit he didnt perform near what he can but either did the red hot fav from Belgium and instead his twin wins when being the rank outsider.
So what do you expect Gillick to do?
1.hang up his spikes?(by the sound of your post seems like the best option)
2.change distance or event when he finished 6th in the world!!!
3.re focus and aim on breaking his Irish record(short term)
4.aim for next championship and long term aim for the olympics

Gillick has been the main focal point of all our elites over the last couple of years as he has competed throughout the whole season running superbly and breaking new ground in the uber competitive world of 400m running.. Derval tends to reserve her moments for the major champs although I hope she will make some hay in the diamond league now... He has been truly world class, maybe he has slightly underperformed in the champs, but the man deserves the height of respect for what he has achieved, especially against the clock.... It does not lie... Critiscism of him should be tempered.....

Michael Johnson set his 400m world record at 32.

I'm baffled by all the hurlers-on-the-ditch who continue to slate their country's athletes who have an off day, and some who even suggest retirement!
The same people probably slated Derval when she had a poor Olympics in 2008 without knowing the full background.
As my signature suggests, I have a passing interest in one of Ireland's top sprinters, and I know how much work they put all put in. Part of that work must be putting the negativity they come across from certain people, and getting out there and trying their best.

Irish sprinting has come a long way when we are dissapointed by two sprinters failing to medal.

Desperatly disappointed with the result, I dragged all my children in to see what I thought would be a gold or silver medal for Ireland but alas was not the case. Having said that I think David Gillick is inspirational and I'm sure there's nobody as disappointed as he is, he was obviously capable of better, and I'm sure we'll see it in the future....

Great post. When people suggest should they retire or they are past it you wonder do they understand sport and particularly athletics at all. Gillick ran within 0.02 of his PB. It's never plain sailing. The bumps and knocks along the way make it all the sweeter in the end.

why would there be outdoor europeans in 2012 clashing with the London Olympics?

To promote the sport within Europe. Most of the elite athletes think its a good idea. Won't clash with Olympics, will be on the same time as US Trials which goes on for as long as the Euro Champs. That never affects the US athletes. Will provide Irish athletes with great chance to get qualifying times in relays especially.

    I like the idea.

look this thread was posted with the title 'End of the road for Gillick?' with the question mark saying it all. I know the guy has done well and his achievement in bringing on Irish 400m running is astounding in that he has constantly broke national records in the last 4 years and broke the 45 second barrier. However, Gillick is now 27. Mid 20s is the usual peak of most athletes. Now I know Micheal Johnson ran a world 400m record at 32 but he was an extraordinary athlete.

Gillick will be 29 in the 2012 olympics and will be facing more rising worldwide 400m athletes such the 20 year old russian lad who finished ahead of him in the Europeans. He'll be 31 when it comes to the Europeans in 2014. With his narrow failures this year at World indoors and European Championship, Gillick's career as a top class athlete able to compete at the very top may be over.

There are also a few other Countries (dont have links im afraid) which i can understand as it will seriously dent either the chances of the Olympic hopefuls who do compete or the competition itself for the athletes who for go it to be on top form for the Olympics

By your username, I'm guessing you run and you are 22. I really hope that when you are 27, run within 0.02 of your PB but have a big disappointment that you wouldn't quit.

Gillick ages at the next majors:

    World 28
    Olympics & Euro 29 (peak)
    World 30
    Euro 31
    World 32
    Olympic 33.

He has two more cycles in him. If he was a loser and a waster, he would quit. He isn't a loser or waster.

Thats Charles Van Commenee, he is a rare old fish and while their leader not the official opinion of GB athletics. What about the GB athletes or even the Irish athletes for that matter. They are very happy in the majority.

Yes you would be correct. Im 21 nearly 22 and im a sprinter. I wouldn't like to quit at 27 but im not saying Gillick should quit at 27. What im saying is it may be the end of Gillick's career at the top of the 400m and his chances of getting major medals outdoors. I can't see him doing the Olympics at the age of 33 in 2016 nor should he be allowed. Gregan by then I say will be around Gillick's standard now and possibly even better.

I think its a bit mixed in terms of the athletes with regards to there events. My previous statement was probably a bit bias to distance (gotta stand up for us sloggers :p). Though you are right there are quite a few in favour of it (especially Chambers considering his situation)

Its a truely shocking idea. Most of the best athletes in Europe will skip the event as they wont want to interupt their training programmes for the Olympics. The Europeans should be only on during a year when they are the priority of that season. In 2012, it will not be the priority.

The comparison with the US trials is pointless. The US athletes have to show up to the US trials and finish in the top 3 or they wont make the Olympic team. There is no such requirements for the top athletes in Europe with regard to attending the Europeans, so expect to see many skip it.

Any medals won in 2012 Europeans I'll be putting an astericks beside it. No way will it compare to Barcelona or Gotenburg where all the best in Europe were there.

Very true, we need to have perspective here. Interesting what Michael Johnson said to Christian Malcolm and he is only 31. He said he is still a young athlete.

You're clearly an idiot! If you clearly would read my original post it stated 'end of the road for Gillick? importance of the question mark. Maybe you should read all of my posts in this thread in which i've had constantly stated my position that being this will be Gillick's last chance of a major medal, should he carry on past his prime? he's 27, or should he continue as the guy who finishes 7th or 8th.

I'm sure David Gillick doesnt see it as his last chance of a major medal. On his day he can mix it with the best in the world. Why cant he go to the Worlds and medal? Less of this Irish negative attitude, and more of the Derval attitude please.

Gillick has had more than 1 bad race - He blew up at the last 2 Indoor championchips and this year's Europeans.

Considering the Euro's and Olympics are on in the same year -
I think this can benefit Irelend as I dont believe Ireland will medal in T&F.
The Irish athletes should concentrate on the Europeans where they will have a more realistic chance of winning a medal.
The will then have a 2nd bite of the cherry with Olympics weeks later.

If you cant aspire to be the very best you can be then why bother. The Olympics are the pinacle of these athletes careers, and that is what they have trained their life for.

    Your attitude is pathetic.

    Also for London 2012:

Rob, Olive, Derval and Gillick can all medal. Granted it may be harder for Derval and Gillick but they can still do it on their day. Try telling Derval not to focus on the Olympics!

Agreed. Can the moderators lock this thread?
Gillick will learn from this and good luck to him in the future. Remember, he's over in the UK for most of the year. The least we can do is to give him moral support as we can't provde him with sufficient facilities etc here.
The real question is 'could the Ireland team management have assisted him better in his pre-finals preparation'? Could he have been shielded better form the media? Was there anything that caused him distress? Were the other teams doing something we weren't?".

Ah come on? Are you seriously blaming the team management because Gillick missed a medal. This is just non-sense in the extreme. The message is: Hard luck David. Better luck next time. He is still a world class athlete.

Media exposure and all these conspiracy theories are utter nonsense.

No. I'm asking questions that should be asked after any major championships. It's a basic quality assurance approach. I'm hoping that the AAI will also be asking the same qustions of their management team. As already discussed, the difference between winning a medal and being an also ran in the final comes down to tiny details. Could we have helped better-in any way? Perhaps the answer is no. But the question needs to be asked- and answered.

I hate thread titles like this completely OTT and reactionary in my opinion. Physically there is no reason Gillick can not aspire for PB's and NR's for at least another 4 years.
Mentally where is Gillick though? He could do alot worst than spending a few weeks training with Derval and learning what makes her tick; time management of your season to peak at majors etc.
Has he offered a reasonable explaination for the the 4x 400m no show yet? Someone got to be made an example of here. If it was for no reason other than he didnt feel like running AAI should make the tough decision and cut his funding next year.

Your right though it's all about the Olympics.
I never said to skip them - what I did say is that they are more than likely going to medal in the Europeans than the Olympics.

To say Gillick is going to medal in London is deluded.
If Gillick made the final it will be an achievement.

I think Heff and O'Rourke are possibly are only realisitc medal hopes.
A get the feeling that Loughnane has settled for her World Silver and has now lost her hunger (I would be wrong though.)
Ciara Mageen is an unknown and might be a little too early for her.

You are obviously a long way from the action if you think Olive Loughnane is finished. It bemuses me on this site when people comment on athletes hunger, dedication or ther such aspects of their makeup that they know absolutely nothing about. I would question your basis for the statement and quite frankly conclude that you know nothing about her.

Could we ask that morons desist from slating our finest athletes ...... even for one week?! If you want to do something positive for the sport coach an athlete, organise a race, etc etc.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion, I have no issue with differences of opinion. However, a lot of athletes read this and criticism sometimes affects even elite athletes e.g. Thomas Chamney considering retiring. He is in a bad place and JK has his usual cheap shot and that was a further kick in the teeth.

I do feel coming on here and stating that somebody has no hunger for competition without any knowledge of what they have done in preparation is at best very foolish and unhelpful.
Many posters on here take offence to any criticism of them or their posts but have plenty to say against our top athletes who give everything they have in pursuit of international success. I find that moronic - but thats just my opinion

I don't think the top top athletes are too concerned about what the pundits say never mind what is said here. Having read his blog I think Chamney would be best advised to find a positive motivation rather than a bitter one if he is ever to make an impact at a major. I mean what Kernan was saying back home was the be all and end all for him!
The talent is undoubtably there with Chamney its a case of getting the head right I think.
Loughane comment was silly I agree!
Anyway we are all gone completely off the topic (End of Gillick)

JK is entited to his opinion alright and if Thomas Chamney wants to retire then let him do so.
He should be man enough to take critisism on the chin and so should all the other athletes for that matter.

Do you realise the commitment and sacrifice that athletes put in? They earn less than the dole from the sport so they are not in it for the money as would be better off in a secure job where they can actually work towards supporting a future for themselves pass their retirement from the sport. They commit to training and a lifestyle which is isolated.
The return they get is abuse from some person hiding behind a internet forum what gives you the right? Chamney has been preparing for this all year doing everything right and gets unlucky by getting ill at the wrong time despite improving his times this year.
We have a handful of top class runners in this country yet you are so willing to turn your back on them. No wonder athletics is a minority sport with mentalities like that

The point I was trying to make is that he needs to toughen up mentally.
If he gets upset by anonomous posts on a internet forum then he the chap has no chance..or by comments made by Jerry Kiernan.

Just look at some of the abuse some of the footballers get week in week out - they have brush it off and not let it get to them - and if they did they would end up in a mental home or worse..(I'm referring to Aiden McGeady in this example).

And secondly I'm an ex-athlete aswell so I know only too well the commitment and hours needed to succeed.

Its time for me to bow out of this conversation. If I argue with that level of ignorance, i'll get dragged down to that level and beaten by experience. :D

    That response is pathetic.

Probably best thing to do for you is to bow out alright. Horsebox is the one talking sense here no doubt about it in my opinion.
