The Japanese made cosplay known to a wider world and that is what they called it...Costume Play. Fancy dress has slightly different meaning, cosplay was for comics, anime etc in Japan. Then Americans started doing it at conventions too and used their word for it.

It is a bit different if you think about it, some of the definitions out there explain it a bit better. I'd never known before looking it up this evening why it was called cosplay.
