Whats a healthy supper?

    So its 10pm, I'm about to knock off to bed in half an hour but I'm feeling hungry.

    Whats a healthy thing to eat at this time?

    Carbs? Maybe a few slices of wholegrain bread and jam

    Protein, some cheese maybe?

    Some veg....

    Whats the right thing to eat if you are hungry just before going to bed.

    The classic supper for bodybuilders is cottage cheese. This has casein, which is a slow release protein, so it will keep you feeling full (or rather, not hungry) for hours, while providing your body with protein. It's low in carbs, so you don't get an insulin spike, and it's not a binge trigger, so you don't eat one and then follow it with a packet of hobnobs.

    Not to be stating the obvious, but you should eat more earlier...

    You should not be eating so close to bed time as it will mess up your sleep as your body processes the food as you sleep [etc]..

    The best supper is no supper IMO. Go to bed hungry. Wont do you any harm.

    Speak for yourself. If I go to bed hungry, I wake at least six times a night.

    I'm one of the 'can't sleep hungry' brigade too. Obviously it's best to get a big enough dinner in the first place but sometimes that doesn't work out.

    Best trick is to eat a little amount of carb, like a quarter of a banana or a little bit of plain potato. This will trigger a tiny insulin rise which will help you transport the amino acids from the protein (tryptophan) you hopefully ate earlier into your brain so that it increases the production of serotonin and leads to more refreshing sleep.

    That's a tip from a great book called 'Potatoes not prozac' (the title is pretty misleading as besides the little bit of bedtime potato, it's a pretty low carb plan).

    Yeah, but I bet going to bed hungry is a great incentive to get up early the next morning and kill something!

    Seriously, I don't sleep well if I'm really hungry. It doesn't have to be a lot, but a snack does make a difference.

    If im hungry (or even a little peckish for that matter) i won't sleep ... at all. I have tried but awoken in the middle of the night unable to get back to sleep. Oatcake with cotage cheese or peanut butter or 2 boiled eggs or heated almond/rice milk with spoon cocoa. I treid some herbal teas but found that i needed something with actual calories. If im not hungry i obviously won't eat before bed.

    Actually, I meant something like a fish or a rabbit, that you could eat for breakfast. Not that annoying brat across the street that insists on playing music at high volume at 2am.

    I'm very much the same - I won't sleep well if I'm hungry. Instead I'll lie there and think about all the wonderful foods in the world... foods that I'm not eating right at that second! For me, personally, it's better to get up and eat something small.

    I find that a piece of cheese or meat or even a glass of warm milk will do the trick. No bread or anything that resembles a meal... just a few mouthfuls of something to get some calories in will do the job. I'll sleep much better and won't have dreams where I'm chasing a pizza through a chocolate factory.

    Thanks for the answers folks......the lesson I will learn from this is oat biscuits and cottage cheese.
