To save space in the iPhone 4, and many other devices SIM's have been shaved. Micro-sims still offer the same functionality as original SIMS but are slightly smaller.

You can transform an existing SIM to a micro-sim with cutting.

    iphone_ipad_micro_sim.jpg

former, normal sim. later, micro-sim ;]

Just make sure to update your plan. I did the same thing before and was on a normal plan. Got charged a bit more for data usage :D They might even change your wife's number to an iphone package which would make her's more expensive

Apparently they are not just the same functionality, but they are actually capable of a bit more than the older ones.

that's what the phone companies tell you here to cover up their incompetence of not being on the ball with this one.

me: rings up meteor, "when will you have micro sims for voice plans available for people who have micro sim compatible phones?

meteor rep: can you hold the line and i'll check.

    me: sure

    me: waits 5 minutes.

meteor rep: do you mean micro SD cards? you can buy them in any meteor store or any good electronic store.

    me: facepalms.

That's not a problem as I'm giving her my 3Gs so being on an iPhone plan won't be an issue.
I presume you can get any number associated to a micro sim as you would be able to with a regular sim.

One thing to remember her Vic, if your wife gets the phone, she will be the one with the micro sim, which obviously wont work in her phone. Make sure to tell the store, they wont care about who get the phone.

got a micro sim from meteor yesterday @ 9am as a replacement sim, they charged me 3e and told me it would swap over within 6 hrs. at 6 pm i rang customer care and was told that it was impossible to switch my number over. after arguing for 15 mins that it is possible to do, she said it would happen overnight. at 9am still nothing, rang customer care yet again for 15mins to be told i had been givin a wrong sim, and to go back to the shop for the right one. on arrival in meteor they tried to charge me another 3e for another broadband sim that wasn't going to work, he rang technical support who comfirmed that "it is impossible get a meteor micro sim for voice, only data" and "that it might be possible soon". is a micro sim really that hard to get on meteor. it astonishes me!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

They won't have voice stock until Friday, and I don't think there will be replacement sims for about 3 weeks.

Does o2 have microsim availability in stores now for PAYG customers now that launch day has arrived?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭fifth

Going into local meteor store today to see what the scéal is around these.

edit: was told to call back in a week or so and they'll have the blank ones, they can transfer it all in store

Anybody any idea do O2 charge you for switch big sim to micro-sim? I'm not buying the phone off them and plan on doing it in a carphone warehouse. The guy on the phone in CPW didn't mention a charge to me?

The transition from a standard sim to a mirco-sim should be free of charge.

Should I backup my old iPhone with the Big sim card in it first, before swapping to microsim? Do both sim card work at the same time, in other words.

I'm afraid I won't be able to backup my iPhone 3G once I change to micro-sim, because i'll need a working sim in the 3G to back it up.

Any advice? Should I backup first then go get the micro-sim? (phone shop is on the way home :( )

All the data on the iPhones is on the phone not the SIM. You can use the phone without a SIM so you can still back it up.

Grand so the sim is only required for activation not backing up

Any word with what Vodafone is doing with micro SIMs? On their site they only mention them in relation to data packages for the iPad, no trace of them being available for switchovers from the larger SIMs...

No, they actually do have a little extra functionality as part of the standard, though I'm not sure if much or any is being used yet.
The specification that standardized the micro-SIM form factor continues to evolve. Some features introduced recently include:

    * a micro-SIM form factor
    * allow for multiple simultaneous applications accessing the card through logical channels;
    * introduce mutual authentication as a way to eliminate carrier spoofing by allowing the SIM card to authenticate the cell tower to which it is connecting;
    * add a new PIN protection with hierarchical PIN management with a universal PIN, an application PIN and a local PIN; and
    * expand the phonebook storage of the SIM card with entries for email, second name, and groups.[2]

SIM is only required to access the phone network. Your iPhone without the SIM is like a fully functioning ipod touch. You can still plug in into iTunes and back it up or add apps and songs on Wifi. With my change from my 3G to 4 I have taken out the sims plenty of times and the iPhone still keeps going just no phone coverage.

Thanks everyone, turns out O2 give you a micro sim within a regular sim within a credit card sized sim. So you can down size as much as you want.

I've got a micro-sim in my iPhone 3G now, until later...... cue crazy laugh!!

The credit card sized sim is only for holding the sim in place I believe, I don't think there is any device that accepts it in it's entirety.

Sorry didn't make myself clear -

Micro-sim < Regular sim < Credit card sim.

You punch out / peel off bits of the sim to make it smaller, but you can't make it bigger without using a third party adaptor.

I punched out the regular sim from the credit card sim (used my iPhone 3G this way), then peeled away the edges to make it a micro sim and use in my iPhone 4.

Why's everyone making such a big deal about getting micro-SIMs? It's fairly easy to cut down a standard SIM to size!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭marty2002

This dude shows how to cut the regular sims down to a micro sim, theres also a link to download a template. I used it myself, very easy to do.

Sometimes it's nice to have carrier provided microsim in your 700euro phone than a potential botch job that unless done correctly could fry your iPhones internals

    I wouldn't go that far.

The only down side is that if you don't cut it properly you will have a usless piece of plastic for a sim.

    Nothing more.

Anyone on Three know what the default SIM PIN is on Three mobile Micro Sims?
I rang Three customer care about it and you'd swear I was asking for the meaning of life, they are gas craic.
I just want to put a SIM pin on my phone, Sims used to come with a pin.
When I go to put a sim on my IP4 it's looking for the old one. I wasn't given one.

I'm sure you've tried looking, but is it not in the sim documentation you were given? When I got my micro'sim from O2 the information was all on the "big" credit card sized pin, like the plastic that was left behind, if you get me.

What's the story with having a micro sim and also a regular sim for the same account and both activated at the same time? This would be handy for if you wanted to use a cheaper phone at a music festival for example instead of a very expensive Iphone 4.

You get an adaptor to transfer the single sim from micro to mini. If you had two going at once which phone would ring when you got a call, where would the text go? Thnk about it!

Well the idea would be to only have one one at a time but outside of that I don't know why they couldn't have it work so that the first one that registers itself on a cell would be the one that is active?

it is technically possible (had two sims for one number on a german network)- you can give one sim the priority to ring first with a keypad code - after that the call jumps to sim prio 2

but this is a special service your network has to offer (i paid 3€ for it a month)- nothing you can sort out yourself.

went to meateor blackpool yesterday and they didn't have blank ones for transfer - just new numbers.
lady was surprisingly knowledgeable and she'll ring me, if she got news

there is a chinese telephone shop on paul strett (en route to tesco) and he said he's getting a proffessionell sim cutter (stencil) today.

sorry this is cork- forgot that this thread is national

same thing. dropped into a meteor store today in liffey valley. they werent too sure, but lady gave me a sim pack (micro sim) with 3ff voice post pay sim pack on it and asked if i could ring customer care as they havent received any training on this at all.

duly did that and the nice lady in customer care tried a couple of times then asked technical support. the one i have is a sim pack with a number allocated to it, and as yet they dont have blank voice ones yet, but it is in the pipeline but she is unsure as to when that will happen.

i guess ill take a scissor to my sim and if i botch it, i can always get a new sim pack to replace my normal sim.

I went into Three today and asked for a 3PAY micro-sim so the guy went and got me one. He was about to sell it to me when the manager said he couldn't - they were only selling them with iPhone purchases

    IDIOTS.

So I got a 3Pay sim which I'll just cut myself.

Why are people so god damn stupid.

    Can I ask why Spipov??

why i cost 3 some cash by taking a sim and not using it (snicker) or why am not going to stick with the iphone 4?

well the reason is simple enough, (and do NOT flame me even though this is an apple forum). i just plain do not like the restriction placed with the iphone.

i like having my calendar appointments as a widget so i know whats coming up next, as i have 30 minute appointments seeing patients. however, i had to buy lockinfo to make that work on the iphone, AFTER jailbreaking.

anything needed is in an icon, you cant use widgets, some things are not available,

actually, do you know what, instead of typing all of this, its simple. unless you jailbreak, and then remember for the rest of your life not to update the iphone and lose the jailbreak, you are so restricted from customising the phone the way you like that it becomes painful

granted every developer is putting out apps for the iphone, yet i feel shackled behind itunes, and the iphone interface, and i dont particularly like it.

You cant browse your files easily, to load up my ebooks (which are all in .txt because ive had them for the last 6 years and read them on different devices), ive had to install goodreader, and that involves then going to your browser to upload your files to the iphone.

its a great retina display, its got great battery life, its a great "look, i have an iphone 4, im better than some, yet ive fallen prey to the notion that having an iphone makes you cool".

but do you know what, ive had the 3g, ive dabbled with the tethered jailbreak on the 3gs until i got sick of it and got rid of it, ive had the iphone 4 because of the hype, im sure when the 5 comes out in a year or less, ill probably get that too and then rant again about ITS shortcomings.

steve jobs, how in god's name did you manage to hold so many people by the b*lls with something that could be so much better but isnt yet?
