Be careful if you get Boags on this offer, it's €1.80 per bottle normally.

They're now "Wells & Young", but the Chocolate Stout is still branded with the Young's side of the house, yes.

I quite like it. The chocolate can be a bit artificial-tasting, but it's hefty enough in the stout department to carry it. You hear all sorts of opinions on it, so I can't begin to guess what you'll make of it. Enjoy!

    I quite enjoy it myself.

Sundrive, Walkinstown, Knocklyon, Lucan, Blackrock, Ballinteer and Bray should all have them in and probably Greystones and Naas as well if you get out that far. The reason why Ranelagh doesn't have them is probably because it's a smaller shop so it's beer range doesn't have the relevant selection in.

Just asked about the stock - Superquinn should have fresh stock of all world beers in stores by this Friday.

We are still an very small minority in Ireland...why is the selection in our pubs so bad?

I was thinking this at the weekend. I was at a wedding in Naas and staying in the (fairly nice) Ospery Hotel. I asked the barman if they had any imported beers and he told me "Oh, we wouldn't be doing that sort of thing." (!?!?!?)

The selection of beers in Dublin has improved hugely in Dublin in recent years, not so much beyond the Pale.

PS- more info on the SQ offer. It includes ALL imported specialist bottled beers, not just the ones on that list, and also includes the porterhouse beers AFAIK.

why is the selection in our pubs so bad?
Because most beer drinkers deem the selection to be acceptable. Almost none of them will walk out when faced with a poor selection.

Well, as the years progress there are more and more pubs opening which are prepared to serve different beers (I take it by "bad" selection you mean limited selection rather than all pubs having a selection of bad beers). Each of them seems to be doing pretty well out of it.

The biggest surprise to me was O'Neills on Suffolk St which is a fairly well established pub which suddenly decided to sell a different range of beers.

IMO it would be great to see the standard boozer do something like what Wotherspoons do in the UK - serve mostly cheap drinks to those that want them, but also have a few unusual beers to try out. That way, even if they don't have your favourite beer, they will at least have something that you might not have tried before.

Was in Superquinn, Ballinteer earlier, a decent range of the 6 for 12, got some St. Peters Organic ale (yum), Wells Choc stout and o haras red ale.

Just tried it. I have to say i really enjoyed it - as you say, tghere is enough stout there and the chocolate taste isnt overwhelming, you just know its there. I went up to SQ in Swords Pavillion but they were out of it last Monday - is this special going into next weekend?

Also tried the Banana Bread beer; bit sweet for my taste but her indoors loved it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭eightyfish

Picked up 8 x Innovation Pale Ale. Delicious hoppy pale ale with a slightly mapeley after taste. Also 2 x Cruim Gold Wheat Beer - sweet and honeyish for a weissbier. And 2 x O'Hara's Red.

Will be picking up some more Innovation before this offer is finished.

I wish they stocked the O'Hara's IPA as I reckon I would be filling a trolly.

So do I, the stuff is really growing on me, and is the absence of Galway Hooker getting bottled, this is a great substitute.

On the bottom of the ad it says valid until 10th August (today). Where'd you see 12th September?

Said it in the shop online section of their website when I looked there 3 days ago is gone now though.

ESB for €2, oh yes!, but...........

    http://superquinn.ie/StoreLocator/165:mad:

They've some neck saying that they've got stores all over the country

Amazing that they haven't even got a store in either Galway or Cork

Wasn't in their branch in Knocklyon yesterday, went in and none of the staff had heard of it, even when I pointed it out in the magazine..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,641 ✭✭✭Turbulent Bill

The Blanchardstown branch has an excellent selection if you're out that direction. I bought a selection about a fortnight ago (not 100% if it's still on), great way to do a home tasting on the cheap.

From the posts above it looks like every craft/world beer is covered, but it's not clear from the signage on the shelves. I might check with the staff next time.

Offer is finished, was really badly organized, when I was in Baldoyle Superquinn it wasn't marked which beers were part of the deal, I asked 2 staff and they didn't know, I don't think Superquinn really give a **** about promoting good beer.

What's with the asterisks when I used a mild swearword in the above post? Bit puritanical for my taste.

    Offer is finished
Bought 12 beers for €24 (Adnams Innovation and Chimay Bleu) about 45 minutes ago in Superquinn Sundrive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,475 ✭✭✭drkpower

Anyone know if this is still going anywhere else? Particularly Sutton or Killester.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭eightyfish

Offer still going in Sundrive. Limited stock left, though. Picked up a Porterhouse selection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,019 ✭✭✭Polar101

Still on in Blanch, got me some O'Hara's Red.. €2.99 normally, so €2 a bottle is fine with me. :)

It's a bit confusing at it says "selected bottled World Beers", but doesn't list which are included - so I just decided Irish beers are included as well. Porterhouse beers were included too, but they're €2.29 normally so only 29 cents off on those.

Still going in Walkinstown, topped up my supply. Plenty of stock.

That's interesting, I am sure they were €1.89 in the Lucan branch. €2.29 is too expensive for these. The celebration stout & Brainblaista might be €2.29 as they're 7% (higher duty).

In Sundrive, they had a list of what beers were covered under both the 6 for €12 World Beer offer and the 6 for €10 nitro keg range as well.

I think it was only the Plain that was €1.89 and the rest of the range was €2.29.

But I find a lot of these supermarkets have a habit of chancing their arm with offers ...

Big sign saying 3 for the price of 2 ... on closer inspection you may find it only applies to the X and Y yet they have X, Y, Z & W all on the same display ... if you get my drift.

The SuperQUin offer never even listed what was included in the offer but had a sign with a picture which a member of staff obviously guessed at by say it was all those and pointing at the picture, When I asked which ones were included.

That's probably right.. I only saw €2.29 bottles, but didn't notice Plain.

€2.29 is pretty steep for a 330ml bottle.

It is, especially when you consider that Aldi are selling 4 bottles of their very fine Traditional Irish Ale for €4.69. Which is also brewed in Ireland by O'Hara's.

I do enjoy the Porterhouse Plain in bottled format it must be said.

I had the same problem on Saturday, couldn't work out which were on offer (or someone to ask...). Ended up getting a mix of O'Hara's Red/Stout (great), Adnams Innovation (great) and St. Peter's Organic Ale (meh), got the 6 for €12. I think everything must be in the offer as Innovation is pretty expensive normally.

That really is great value for Innovation. Usually around 3.50 a bottle I thought. Some of the Adnams beers are really good from what I've tried but innovation is outstanding.
