If you're fat, would you mind being told you're "fat" BY A MEDICAL EXPERT?

Doctors and other health professionals should tell people that they are “fat” rather than use the word “obese”, a British* health minister said today.
Anne Milton said that the term fat was more likely to motivate people into losing weight, adding that it was important that people took “personal responsibility” for their lifestyles.
Insisting that she was speaking in a personal capacity, Ms Milton told the BBC: “If I look in the mirror and think I am obese, I think I am less worried [than] if I think I am fat.”
    * Word "British" was inserted by myself to make it clear its an English source quote.

    - So (leaving aside the average on the street person) if you were at the doctors/hospital and you were really too large, would you feel insulted if that MEDICAL EXPERIENCED PERSON called you fat?
    - Would that motivate you into trying to do something about your weight more so rather than they just saying your "obese?"

If I was fat, I would have to say, being called it by a trained person in the medical field would probably make a difference.

Source article that made me pose the question, wondering how others would feel themselves?

No if they called me fat would be the truth if i was fat,so therefore if i was fat would help by been told by someone in the medical profession as i would know they didnt say it for no reason.:p

hmm dunno, its kinda like a doc diagnosing you with "the clap" instead of gonorrhea...
    funnier though!

...Yea I know what you mean and agree, but there is always the person who will either feel genuinely insulted or get on their high-horse about it too.

If I was fat, I'm sure I'd know about it so no, a doctor saying it to me wouldn't come as some big shock. When I hear the word 'obese' I always think 'extra fat', so maybe I'd find just being fat a little less insulting!

I love the way they think people need to be diagnosed with obesity by a doctor.

When I was fat, I figured out I was fat all by myself, now someone give me an honorary MD!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,102 ✭✭✭afatbollix

But obese is worse than being fat??

when you have over 30% body weight in fat is when you're obese..

If I was called fat I would then say thank god Im not obese..

have to admit the fat comment would upset me more. obese makes it sound like a medical condition and therefore not my fault

No if they say its glandular or medical reason, then its not your fault. If its because you eat and eat and do no exercise. Then people should take responsibility for their choices and except its their fault.

i wouldn't care. fat/obese pretty much means the same thing like every other politically correct term.

Yea, that was the point of the medical experts and others in the article at the bottom of the first post.

that seems like a bad reason to do it tbh. why would you want to upset a fat patient? i think it would make them eat more..

Anyone who is overweight has probably been at the receiving end of "fat" insults; it has become primarily an emotive and insulting word. It has no place in the relationship between doctor and patient, which should be a place of trust and confidence. That said unhealthy weight should definitely be flagged and addressed, but the words used should be scientific. Obese is the clinical term, I think it's far more alarming than fat anyway.

I would be offended. I don't agree that it would motivate people more.
I would probably resent my doctor and be less likely to follow his/her advice.
    Bad idea imo.

    How about Horizontally-Challenged?

    Nah - Fatty-Fatty-Bum-Bum is better

    In his clinic, no.

    Walking down the street, maybe.

Make some of them eat more maybe? Yes, maybe so.
Some also over-eat for other reasons besides emotional distress as we know.

I'd find some random person asking me am I pregnant more effective than a medical expert telling me I'm fat to get off my arse and do something...

yeah, but i still think it's a half-arsed idea. i think if you're in the frame of mind to lose weight then you're gonna do it whether your doc calls you fat or obese.

I really really hate, when i see someone i havent seen in ages and they have that kind of tummy. And i dont know whether to congratulate or shut up.And then whats worse when you dont congratulate and they say, dont worry i am not fat i am pregnant.I actually asked someone aww can i feel your belly how long you have to go.:o

Obese and fat mean the same thing, but fat is more insulting to some people, even though it does mean the same thing...
If I was overweight, however, I would not take offence at a person in the medical profession telling me so, and advising me on how to best lose weight.

That's why I hate fat people. They deal with being fat by eating more to make themselves feel better instead of losing the weight.

i believe that most fat people are simply wasters. it doesn't take much effort to lose weight, the genes that are supposedly at fault in the opinions of the fat can be beaten, and pussy-footing around fat people doesn't make them any skinnier. being fat is the single worst thing anyone can do for their health, and although i don't smoke myself, i get extremely pissed off when a fat person comments about a smoker.

"you know smoker, those smokes will kill ya." = socially acceptable

"you know fat person, those wedges will kill ya" = WAR

always with the fcuking potato wedges and mayonnaise.

and btw, they're not cuddly, curvacious, voluptuous or any such bollix, they are fat. and it doesn't matter, because nobody is attracted to fat people.
