Dublin versus Tyrone

Suprised it doesn't have its own thread yet.

    Tyrone to win by 7.

Most Dubs fans would be happy enough with that which would indicate a marked improvement on previous years and more than we expected in the first year of rebuilding.

Anything even approaching a close game would be a fantastic achievement for this new team given the class and experience of Tyrone.

I know its taboo for a Dub to predict a Dublin win but i'm full of hope Tyrone aren't what they used to be. I'd stress hope because if they are as good as ever they will win and win decisively.

Starting well is absolutely crucial for an inexperienced Dublin team but I reckon their hard work and commitment might inconvenience Tyrone. Certainly they didn't play to their usual standard when Cork outworked them last year so heres hoping.

tyrone by 6 or 7 for me. Dubs are a bit light yet, but they will put up a good fight and show progress from the last 2 years.

maybe just maybe, they have one huge performance in them however to throw us all off?

I think most of us Dubs in the land of reality would be happy with a good performance and a respectable scoreline.

Having already relegated Tyrone this spring it's probably too much to even consider knocking them out of the Championship too.

If Saturday is to be out last game this year well then lets hope we put in more effort than 2008 and 2009.

I'm going in with no expectations, and won't be too surprised to see us win should it happen. Having been at all games bar Cork in the league and Tipp in the championship I just don't know which Dublin team are going to turn up. A mix of the team that played Kerry, Tyrone and Louth would be nice. We live in hope.

Once it doesn't rain like in 2008 we should all be happy :p

Ah yeah forgot to add that. Got completely drenched that day I did but I'd take another drenching if it came with a Dublin win!

Dublin to be beaten by 6 or 7 points.

My head says Tyrone by 7 or 8. But I have this lingering optimism bubbling away in my gut that Dublin could just sneak it, maybe!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,224 ✭✭✭DH2K9

I think that Tyrone and Kerry are neck and neck for the best team in the country but I would put Dublin on a par with Cork. Going to be in Killarney for wweekend so going to miss the match after going to fkn O'Byrne Cup:mad::mad::mad:. I expect Tyrone to edge a decent match. Tyrone by 3.

I can see Dublin putting up a good fight as long as they keep their heads up... and play the 70 minutes. They seem to fall away in the second half weather their in front or behind :/

....let me see.... Tyrone + 3 points, in a very close match

Well, in the Q/F as Ulster Champions is the time to play them. Poor record at that stage.

I can only see a Tyrone win here. The movement of Tyrone's forwards will be too good for Dublin and the inexperienced full back line will be pulled all over the place. I'm just hoping for a more respectable performance than our previous two All Ireland Quarter Final appearances.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭Magi11

In Dublin's last two defeats at this stage; Kerry last year and Tyrone in 2008, they conceded an early goal in both games. If they can avoid this they have a chance. Tyrone might struggle to repeat the Ulster Final performance and probably won't face such a naive management team again. Monaghan won the midfield battle and Kevin Hughes is one of a number of players who would have to step up, Mugsy, Sean Cavanagh and Dooher will all need to have far more influence against Dublin. Tyrone kicked far too many wides against Monaghan and the lethargic performance against Kildare at this stage last year wouldn't do either. Basically I think that people think that Tyrones performance against Monaghan makes them the finished article, but Monaghan were fancied by many partly because of several question marks that hung over the Tyrone team. I'm don't think all those questions have been adequately answered. There's also the motivation question. Everyone is going for Tyrone, which doesn't suit Mickey Harte, but it might be harder for them to get up for this game as whenever they have really needed to best Dublin in the past, they have. If they get through this they have a score to settle against Cork and a final against Kerry but this is where they could be caught.
The Dublin team and supporters are going to this game more in hope than in confidence which is a stark contrast to the jingoism of the last 2 (5?) years. I can remember watching the Tyrone game in 2008 and it was 2-5 v 1-2 (and dublins goal was a pox) before I realised Tyrone might, (might!) win!!!This was because I had been so taken in by the media's coronation of Dublin. That's not going to happen this Saturday. I still fancy Tyrone but these predictions of 6-7 points are way off the mark.

Have to push all the hype factor, the rustiness, the favourites tag out of the way and analyse the two teams strengths and weaknesses.

I for one believe that Dublin do have a fighting chance against Tyrone if we turn up.Obviously this new Dublin team is not unacquainted with beating the big teams as seen in the league and I just hope that that belief carries into this game.I think Tyrone will have it on their minds moreso than we will.

I can't see Pascal McConnell conceding any more than one goal,if we are lucky to get it.We need all forwards firing on all cylinders and I just don't think our forwards (on form) are scoring enough. We need a huge effort from all this time. There is no point on relying on 2 or 3 guys to get it done.Obviously we know the game plan of opposition in the past is to mark Bernard Brogan out of the game.Louth did a great job of this but Dublin to their credit hit in ball to O Gara and Flynn and used Alan Brogan to link up attacks.

Alan Brogan will need to score more and not get himself in impossible angles. He will also need to PASS the ball more as his selfish head down runs will be ineffective against a swarm defense ike Tyrone who will turn over posession and use it more wisely and effective than ourselves. We have to be economical with our chances and possession.

I'm concerned that if Tyrone do get a goal or 2 this will end us.They are the best point scorers in the champioship and are very good at making space and taking clever passes.Adding a goal or 2 to this will surely be an insurance policy for them in a high scoring game.

Midfield is an area I am very confident on.I think we will beat Tyrone in this department with or without McConnell.I feel he is getting better and better with each game and hasn't been given the credit merited. How Tyrone stop McAulay is anyones guess.I feel he will be double marked with Tyrone bringing an extra man in the middle.Cluxton may kick out more to the wings to counter this from time to time.

Half back line should do ok.I just hope Cahill and Cullen are on song.A bit worried about our corner back positions rather than our full back to be honest.I think Tyrone will use a lot of diagonal ball into the corner.

I'm going to go with a Tyrone 4 point win and put more hype/pressure on Tyrone.:D:D:D:D

This is a very interesting tie. And it's also interesting that this thread is so quiet so far.

I expect Tyrone to win. In fact I think they might win Sam this year. I say might because I'm not fully sure about them yet so tomorrow's match will help me decide as to how good they are.

As for Dublin, I can't decide at all as to how they have improved since getting knocked out of Leinster. Their wins in the qualifiers have been just what they needed -- a steady string of results. It doesn't matter that they haven't looked awesome in winning. But the big question for me in relation to Dublin is their (in)ability to put up a fight against better teams. They utterly capitulated to both Tyrone and Kerry in recent years. On top of that, they took a hammering from Meath this year.

There's a mental weakness to Dublin. It's utterly understandable too. There is a ridiculous amount of expectation placed on them. However, this year seems a little different. Maybe tomorrow will be Dublin's chance to break the shackles of stage-fright and give Tyrone a right good fight.

Speaking as a Kerryman, it would be nice to see Dublin win. Their heavy defeat last year to Kerry seems to have done a lot for them. It got rid of the hype and bullsh*t and has allowed them to mature and become a lot more focussed.

Although if I was putting money on it i'd back Tyrone.

Roll on to-morrow, I'll be in the pub for 2! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,260 ✭✭✭PatsytheNazi

Tyrone and Kerry have at least plateaued I think (if their still improving then the rest will never win an AI again!) but are the deteriorating and if so by how much. I think both have gone back a bit from what they were, they must have and the question is have they gone back enough to be beaten? I think they have and I think there are question marks over this version of both Tyrone and Kerry. Many have asked about the quality of teh opposition Cork have met well the same could be asked of Tyrone. Armaghs defeat to an out od sorts Dublin puts Monaghans abilities into question. Have Tyrone really beaten anyone of note?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

While most pundits are going for a Tyrone win Dublin are under no pressure whatsoever from their own fans or the media and based on this I reckon the Dubs could upset the odds tomorrow and win by 2 or 3 points.

tyrone seem to be a bit of a lazy team in that they only seem to do as much as they need to do. they havent bothered with the league and are moving on in the championship without too much hassle so its very hard to say what their current form is.

I dont think we'll see how capable they are until some team puts it to them - and not too many teams have so far in this championship. I can see them beating dubin, but it'll probably only be by a few points since i suspect tyrone will just do enough to keep ahead, and reserve energy for the last couple of games.

I would definately not call Tyrone a lazy team!!

It's all about building fitness towards peaking late August in September.
And they have done it suberbly in the past.

Almost impossible for amateurs to maintain top level fitness without burnout from January to September.

More smart than lazy in my opinion.

Totally agree, but as a tyronian I didnt want to put it that way

On paper you gotta say it's Tyrone's game to win. But as they say, the game is played on grass not paper so ya just never, never know. Roll on The Dubs. There'll be at least one surprise result this weekend and I hope it is us. Managed to organise brilliant tickets too for me and my daughter so a great day out awaits.

I think Tyrone are overhyped. They are not the force they once were.Dublin really have shown nothing to suggest they're any good but I don't think Tyrone have either. They won an Ulster title without beating any good opposition.

Tyrone to scrape a win by a couple of points.

Recently dublin haven't shown me anything that would make me believe that they could beat any of the top three teams currently. Cork, Kerry and Tyrone would beat the dubs. While they might put in some good performances I would expext dublin to lose the vast majority of matches against those 3 counties. Tomorrow I think they will lose to Tyrone, albeit with a spirited performance, but 5 or six points. Tyrone are not the team they once were, but are still better than the dubs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭bohsboy

Its a strange year with the usual hype gone and much smaller crowds. This has suited Dublin and I think they might peak tomorrow with a battling display. Could be a draw or the Dubs by a point or two.

I'm siding with Dublin here, they'll be dying to get past this stage, and could have a huge performance in them.

Wheres the optimism lads! I think Tyrone will win (actually where is it?!?) but not by 7 or 8 points. I think and really hope we can give them a good game and have them sweating towards the end but rekon they will win by 2-3 points. If it comes together i can see Dublin maybe scraping it but will need a solid game from us. Unlikely, but ill keep the fingers crossed!

Pat Gilroy has been keen to stress all year that this is a transition year for his Dublin team so it would be very hard to make a case for Dublin this Saturday. However, I believe that reducing the burden of expectation from Dublin will help them perform to their potential, something Dublin have come nowhere near to doing in their last two quarter final appearances.
Most logic will convince you that this is a bridge too far for this Dublin team and they are only a stepping stone for Tyrone to overcome on the way to bigger and better things.

Early in the game but very impressed with the application of the Dublin players so far . .

Just goes to show that when you work hard, dont have any hype and play as a team you can play above yourself . .

Still expect a Tyrone win, but alot of positives to take so far . .

Enough reason for Brogan to be booked there surely..

    Brogan.

Wouldn't mind timing the frees the Dublin keeper takes, all very silly.

All coming from the silliness of having a keeper out for taking frees.
Then someone else does get a yellow for nothing.

Could've been another yellow just now for no. 10 that wasn't given.
