    More like a teaser!

Speaking personally, I'm not a Zack Snyder fan. I enjoyed 'Dawn of The Dead' but found '300' and 'Watchmen' pretty damn average. 'Watchmen' definitely had it's moments, but '300' was just turgid muck!

This doesn't look particularly inspiring - yes, full of gorgeous women (Emily Browning ftw!), machine guns, space and ummm.. dragons - but... actually, no.. that does sound pretty good if pulled off right!

Anyways, Snyder does know how to do impressive visuals.. so that trailer has that in abundance.

Would it be a Zack Snyder trailer if it didn't? ;)

I'm a fan of Zack Snyder, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this. It'll be interesting to see what he does with his own material, given that his first three films have been adaptations of other work.

You gotta hand it to Snyder. He knows his audience, and he knows how to deliver what they want. As to whether the film will be any good... who knows. Will have to wait to see it. But on a personal level, I really liked the trailer. It's pure trash. But visually gorgeous trash.

I admit, visually it looks savage. A giant samurai thing with a monster gattling gun where a girl in scantly clothes leaps at it in slow motion?...............pure thrash that might just be watchable :pac:

Alas, I cannot get excited about a Zack Snyder film - I hate his over stylisation of everything. Trailer has fun ideas, but it's Snyder's delivery that turns me off.

Seen this earlier on and just thought to myself..........this could be my fave movie of 2011. After all, Zack Snyder did it to me with Watchmen & 300. Definately looking forward to this. Along with Thor, Captain America, Transformers 3 and the final Harry Potter, it looks like i'll be spending a lot of time in the cinema next Summer

Sounds like a summer or all flash and no substance.....

Just watched the trailer. Looks very very impressive visually, but so did Watchmen. and that was awful!

    Still, should be fun!

Watchmen was not just one of the best comic book movies, but one of the best movies full stop of the last 10 years. I understand why people didnt like it or 'get it', but it can not be called awful. I just wont accept it :p

Samurai wielding miniguns? WW2 bombers against dragons?

Jeez I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I would be betraying my inner nerd if I didn't get completly excited by that trailer.

It's trashy, showy, geeky, massively grindhouse and yet I love it already.

    meh

I'm in the not a big zack snyder fan crowd

I thought dawn of the dead was fine because he didnt try to do what romero already did and went with his own film. But it was a film I liked because it was fun, it emphasized quite nicely the zombies + shotguns = fun (i emphasize shotguns over simply guns...it needs to be shotguns)

But 300 was only ok but started a worrying trend that what he did on his own in these adaptations tend to be a rather poor affair, hence 300 had the leadweight of the whole parliament wife standing up support the war by jingo bollox.

And I didnt like the watchmen adaptation because I dont think Znyder got it rather then me not getting it.

To be fair this trailer looks better then his other film at the moment (which is all slow motion practically) but this one just screams quantity over quality and just does not have me interested.

but I could be pleasently surprised as this is his first film in a long time that isnt him adapting someone elses work so it wont have that clunky merging of two ideas that 300 and watchmen suffered and might work better as a film.

I didn't know which you meant.. but he's directing Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. I saw the trailer for this before 'Toy Story 3' in a packed-out IMAX theatre in the States.

And I've never seen a room of 1000 people fall into such an awkward silence.. people didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It didn't help that it was sandwiched between 2 trailers for comical animated films.

This is.. something else entirely.. maybe it's what they're going for, but it did nothing for me!

Watchmen was awful - way too long and I had to stop myself from falling asleep. Having said that, I totally enjoyed Dawn of the Dead.

That owl thing is truly a big old pile of WTF.

    Legend-of-the-Guardians-Hugo-Weaving-as-Noctus-4-3-10-kc.jpg

It looks well animated and all, but honestly: owls? And the most longwinded title ever to boot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

yeah i meant legend of the guardians which screams zack snyder cause its insanely OTT with the slow motion.

The new Happy Feet?....it's for kids, it might have charm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,339 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

    That owl film looks.... weird!

It seems Warner Brothers were making a kids film... but forgot to tell Snyder.

And Snyder was making a "slick" action film, but forgot to tell WB!

So it just looks like a pile of piss!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,732 ✭✭✭fluke

The Sucker Punch trailer looked like pure colourful trash.

...and then there's the Owl movie with the generic rock...

As for Watchmen it wasn't altogether bad. Snyder did follow the book as best he could but at the same time apart from the that great intro the movie was just lame. I haven't really gotten the idea that he's a visionary director as he's being titled before.

I like the look of the owl one. I think they've removed "The Warriors of Ga'Hoole" bit from the title since,so now its just called legend of the guardians. Apparently its a series of childrens books.

I like snyder's work so far, I think Dawn of the Dead was great fun, 300 was visually stunning(style over substance but so was the comic) and watchmen was as good a movie as it could have been considering the source material(apart from the use of Hallelujah).

Reckon I'll go see both of these. Cutting down on the slow-mo would be no harm though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,612 ✭✭✭uncleoswald

It really does look like he's just hired some good concept artists and thrown the result up on screen.
Snyder seems to take others good work and at best adds nothing original to it and at worst takes away all the nuances to leave a pretty but shallow end result.

Zacks Dawn of the dead remake was awsome , 300 passable, his watchman as good an adaption as could have been made of that book but in no way perfect , as for this I'm airing on the side of WTF, I can't make heads nor tails of it, I mean it looks pretty spectacular but whether it will all hang together like a proper film should is another thing it my just end up as a series of increasingly bizarre and manic set pieces .

    Time will tell .

This is the first time he's made something of his own, all his other films were adaptations/remake so should be interesting to see what it turns out like.

Quite true, this could make him or brake him .

How so? He's turned a profit on all his films thus far. It could tell us wheter or not he can direct a decent film based on an original screeplay, but it's not going to be his last film even if it flops.

Besides directors work from storyboards all the time, there's not much different in using a storybaord adapated from comic book panels and using a storyboard created from an original screenplay. I dunno if people saw this or not but there was artwork released after comic-con that looked a lot like what could be a comic-book cover, so I'm thinking that Snyder works best when he has a source material to work off of.

What will be interesting is to see how he directs a film where there is nothing to remain faithful to, as with his previous films he had a story in place already that he couldnt really diverge from too much without alienating fans of the original.

I dunno, the Comic Con trailer seems to confirm for me the idea that Zack Snyder, were he not a director, would be posting fanboy art to Deviantart.com and the ilk. Probably also featuring samurai with mini-guns fighting hot girls. He's the (comic / film / gaming / internet) nerd done good.

He seems to be trapped in the mindset of the adolescent boy who over-fetishises women (all the women in 300, Laurie in Watchmen and now all the women in Sucker Punch) and enjoys grandiose, explosive, action-packed visuals for their and the technology's own sake. With all the slow-motion shots, he's almost like the anti-Michael Bay. In the specific case of Laurie from Watchmen, he showed the slavering-fanboy ability in presenting her the ass-kicking sexpot, but was completely incapable of writing of her demons and vulnerability.
I'm not sure where Dawn of the Dead fits in with this, although if he is the personification of the comic/film/internet nerd, then zombies fits in quite nicely.

To be fair, his movies have always been great to look at & as much as Watchmen was turgid, dull and a great cure for insomnia, every scene looked fantastic.

But then he does want to make a movie with a steampunk Vanessa Hudgens fighting dragons in slow motion, so I must admit - I am feeling conflicted.

honestly that trailer really put me off.

For some god awful reason I kept thinking it was some disturbing adaptation of Dakitana mixed with American Mcgee's Alice.

Its plot comes off more like a videogame then anything, here are 5 action packed levels over 5 different time periods, you need to collect 5 items, one from each world to unlock the good ending.

    take this

    combined with this

    and voila suckerpunch!

    my jaw dropped D:

that is like the ultimate combination of all types of wet dreams together in one movie!!! i cant wait now!!!altho i will go with the expection of some bad editing/overlength, Watchman editing was really bad imo.

Comes across as a Steampunk version of The Fall in many ways from the teaser and trailer.

I also like the fact that an awful lot of the sets are actually built to scale and are not just CGI creations.

One thing about Synder that I love is the way he can get a look to his films that often seems like it should be in a film with a bigger budget.

Just seems that the bigger the budget he gets, his ability to get the maximum from each dollar improves.

From lower budget like his $28m take on Dawn Of The Dead to his one mega budget, the $130m Watchmen, he always brings great value in terms of visuals and sounds, and I love watching his films as they are generally an immersive visual experience in the cinema.

This is the movie equivilant of Megan Fox........ looks amazing but there's not much else!

I have to say though, it's a really good trailer. Actually makes me want to see the movie even though i kinda get the feeling it'll be a bit rubbish.

Additionally, if you saw this trailer in the cinema without knowing ANYTHING about it, the first think that would come to mind is "This has to have been directed by Zack Snyder!"

Don't be so quick to trust RT.

When Snyder's remake of Dawn Of The Dead came up, it had a terrible RT score, similar to what Sucker Punch has now. Then a run of great reviews pushed it up to the 76% it is today.

Lol at the ham-fisted attempt at female empowerment "Look these girls are so bad-ass, they can like, kill stuff and sh1t... but they totally have to look hot while they're doing it and have sexually-suggestive names!" Fail.

Though I suspect the audience Snyder's aiming for couldn't give two sh1ts about that. I'm put off seeing this purely cause it looks it has way too much stuff going on, like he just wanted to cram as much "OMG!Zombies!Nazis!Dragons!" stuff into the film as possible. It's like "Inception" on steroids or something.

I liked "300", "Watchmen" was quite good if far too long, this just looks a bit ****e, tbh.
