If it was any other British club I would no doubt be met with a chorus of 'so what', but felt this is of thread starting significance tbh. He's an U17 international Alan Smith from Crumlin Utd. Great to see. :)

Best of luck to the kid. With the present situation at Rangers it might be a very good move as he will get chances to play top level football quicker there than with most clubs given their current financial situation.

Its not going to be easy for him, I rekon he'l get a tough time from certain parts of both the Rangers fans and Irish fans, if he ever plays for Ireland

Good luck to him. Hope he wont be too upset by his new club's fans singing about the Irish famine or telling fellow Irish to go home. Bit odd for a young lad to make this decision but genuinely good luck to him. i dont forsee any hassle if he eventually plays for Ireland.

I look forward to giving him the traditional Rangers welcome by booing him at the new Lansdowne Road on his senior debut.

    (joke)

Wayne Rooney seems to cope fine with Utd fans singing about scousers robbing and eating rats.

Good to see from Rangers to be honest. Didn't realise that Danny Wilson, who was one of their best players last year, was a Celtic fan either.

    I dont support this.

Fair play to him. Good footballing decision anyway. As mentioned in the thread earlier he'll get to play at a higher level quicker in his career than he would otherwise. Great stepping stone

    But it will.

I think it's a fairly strange decision, tbh.
He'll probably get abuse at Ibrox, definately at Celtic Park and probably in Lansdowne if he ever plays for Ireland, I'd say he's been getting a fair bit around his own home as well, neighbours that support Celtic and thee likes.

    Good luck to him, anyway.

I'd assume this is down to Alan Kernaghan being Rangers under 17 coach.

Best of luck to him. This country needs new goalkeeping talent as we can't rely on Given forever. Let's hope he makes it and encounters little hassle along the way.

Welcome to the club Alan, it would be excellent to see you break though in the future.

Best of luck to the lad. To be honest, the less we hear about this lad for off the pitch reasons the better. I'm sure if he performs and does well for the club then the fans won't give a **** where he's from. But it's good to see that what would be an issue for some, isn't for him, shows he has good mental strength at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,689 ✭✭✭sky88

fair play to him who cares if he went to rangers

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭DB10

Judging by the first page of that Rangers forum, they have already taken to him....
disgraceful.... this club is going to pot...signing a republican is the final straw

He's going to have people on his back like this one if he even makes it...

Anyway Steven Davis and Kyle Lafferty are Irish....

Decent start to the young lads career, he might make it big one day and play for Celtic:pac:

I'll never understand this obsession Irish people have with a foreign league that only contains 2 competitive teams.

Best of luck to the young lad if it furthers his career, gives him a few bob and helps him get in to the national team to make us all proud.

Oh, and yes, I do know the history behind it all.........................

Each to their own I say. Plenty have the same feeling of the PL or even the "Irish League".

I suspect he'll take every bit as much stick, if not more from certain elements of Celtic fans, i suggest you take a look at "Generic Hun Thread: Volume 6485183" on whichever one of their forums it is.

Thats besides the point however, the majority of Rangers supporters, along with the majority of Celtic supporters will doubtfully give a toss where he is from.
If he is performing well for the club, then he will win over all but the most bigoted of supporters at Ibrox, and he'll probably be hated by Celtic supporters for the simple fact that he is playing well for their greatest rivals.

Im fairly sure i could nip onto any forum, aimed at any football club, and find a single post which i can sensationally use as a way of saying "fans of X football club are nasty, twisted, horrible people".

Interesting that you skimed by half a dozen "Good luck" messages before finding the juicy morsel of sensationalism that you were after eh?

Fair play to lad cant be an easy decision to make but if crumlin united were happy for the lad to go down that route and sign then whats the problem they have probably sent hundreds of kids to england and scotland so they must think its a good move for him and obviously warned him on the negative points.
The only people that would have a problem with this are some of the dinosuars that travel over from the republic and northern ireland each week not your born and bread glasweigans goodluck to the lad.

    ..

You mean as opposed to the EPl that will have at least 12 teams battling it out for the title this season??? NOT. Most leagues in Europe are dominated by 2 or 3 clubs .

well he'd have to gradually move up the footballing spectrum

perhaps from rangers to a championship side, then to a lower premiership side, then to someone challenging for europe

Funny thing is most the people who may abuse this player dont even go to Mass or church.

Who cares who he plays for. Best of luck to the lad and hope he plays for Ireland and turns into great player.

We dont live in dark ages no more

Good point and hopefully he doesn't receive any abuse from Celtic or Oirish fans either, would be bad form/

No, what I am saying is that loads of Irish people support clubs from nearly every tier of the English League because, at the time they got interested in the game, that team may have been to the fore and they have stuck with them since. IMO people support the 2 team Scottish league for other reasons
