Someone linked home test kits here before. Have you that link perchance whoever you are?

Friad not Khannie - maybe it was temple?

You can get your levels checked with your GP if you ask for 25-hydroxxy vitD blood test but it costs a few squid.

**** that's just one test? are there any that offer multiple testings, so you can see how your preferred treatment/supplementation is working? 65 a go is not cheap!

That same place does 220 for 4 tests. I haven't searched much more tbh.

There was a discussion about sun exposure on women's hour the other week. A woman was using vitamin d defiency as a pro-sun bathing arguement, the specialist dismissed it immediately saying unless a person is living indoors 24/7 and if they do go out they are covered up completely there isn't a possibly of lack of Vitamin D.

given the summer we had so far surely its unlikely?

Studies consistantly show that we are D defecient here. For Vit D you need UVB rays so you need unprotected sun exposure for a few min between 11-3. UVA rays are strongest after that. Prob is most people have sun protection on between these hours when out which largely negates Vit D production in the body. Levles will be higher in the summer here obviously but we get n owhere near enough for year round going.

It turns out one UK agency warning was just copied from the Australians, who obviously get far more sun than us so would have to be far more careful.

    http://www.healthresearchforum.org.uk/reports.html
The SunSafe Advice – Safe and Smart
    1. Sunbathe safely without burning – every day if you can.
2.The middle of the day is a good time for sunbathing in the UK.
    3. Start by sunbathing for 2-3 minutes each side. Gradually increase from
    day to day.
4.Don’t use sun screen while sunbathing.
    5. If feeling hot or uncomfortable expose a different area, cover up, move
into the shade – or use sun screen.
6.When abroad, where the sun is generally stronger, expose yourself for
shorter times until you find out how much is safe.
    7. Children benefit from sun exposure, but need guidance.
8.A tan is natural and is generally associated with good health.
If you read those reports you will see people are actual at risk of rickets in Scotland, and presumably here too. Darker skinned people are at a higher risk as they do not get the same vitamin D production.

I have psoriasis and it is now almost completely gone after getting a UVB light. I have read a book and articles online saying psoriasis and dermatitis gets worse in the winter due to the air being drier which I think is nonsense now, I am certain it is mainly due to the lack of UVB. There are also warnings about UVB/sun/Vitamin D and pregnant women saying babies born at a certain time of year are more prone to MS due to a lack of vit D in the mothers during pregnancy.

There were warnings in those reports that in years to come there might be a huge rise in health issues since parents are slathering kids in suncream and putting on "sun suits", thats if they get out of the house at all, driven to school, playing computer games etc.

Yep. I think there were 8 reported cases of rickets in crumlin childrens hospital last year. Don't quote me on that, but there are still cases of rickets in Ireland.

I've been taking D3 now for the past year. I vary the dosage from 2000 - 5000 IU daily then take a two week break. The D3 form is much superior to D2 as indicated in the article from the web link. I've noticed marked improvements in alleviating ME symptoms and general vitality.

Seems it was 23 cases of rickets....

    http://www.fsai.ie/details.aspx?id=6984

The FSAI (Food Safety Authority of Ireland) recommends supplementing vitamin D for infants at 200iu's. The American Paediatric association recommends 400 (it had recommended 200, but decided based on recent research that this was not enough). I supplement around 3000 iu's per day myself (I have a fine "farmers tan" :)). I do get some sun during the day most days though. If I didn't I'd go for 5000 iu's.

Just adding a D3 supp improved the colour of your skin? I'm going to order some soon so, that sounds great.

Im convinced its down to the d3 (nothing else has changed in my lifestyle really) and iv always been pale my whole life. Even during the summers i was always pale, even after i burned i was always pale but ever since taking d3, iv gotten colour to my face. I wouldnt say it was a tan, my face simply now has colour, a healthy glow so to speak for the forst time. Im told my face does not look 'like death' anymore which can only be a good thing. Iv been taking d3 since mid march i think.

    Jeez, that is unbelievable:eek:

On a sort of related note, did anyone else read this article in the indo http://www.independent.ie/health/latest-news/fad-diets-could-lead-to-osteoporosis-2269962.html

Didn't Gwyneth herself not say in another article (on Goop?) that she had was extremely deficient in Vitamin D and that her doctors had attributed the onset of osteopeonia to that???

I'd imagine her training regime had something to do with her Osteo too. Her trainers says - 'gwyneth never uses more than 2lb weights....' This from a so called celebrity trainer.:eek:

It's starting to look like i work for a vit.d supplement comapny!!

It could be the fact the we have had more prolonged sun this summer or it could be some other by factor but iv never tanned when abroad on holidays before etc. I dunno - but i have noticed a gradual difference since i started taking ot and so have others. Who knows - by winter i could be as pale as a ghost again. Here's hoping i am not!

I dunno where I read this (possibly over on the forum at Mark's Daily Apple?) but some folks who have switched to a more paleo/primal diet have found that they don't burn as easily as when they were eating a standard diet.
