Seamus, take your dummy teams, your fake injured players, your fake fit players, your insistence that no one plays for their club and thus making a mockery of the league, your stunt with the jerseys in 2007, your stunt with taking Tyrone's dressing room last week, your disgraceful treatment of Sean Gorman that was just to get the spotlight on you, your complete lack of tactical awareness, your obsession with Rory Woods, your failure to play Paul Finlay in his correct position, your disregard for anyone on your panel who wears 23 or higher on matchdays, your delays fielding for the second half at EVERY game, your treatment of James Conlon and your total lack of planning for Monaghan's future and leave as soon as you can.

What's the stunt with the jerseys in 2007? Just curious!

I think he'll go after this - and I don't mean the thread :) - in any case. They put in a very poor display today. They should have beaten Kerry in 2007. That was probably their best chance and performance in Croke Park.

I presume that the jersey thing is when Monaghan played in their traditional white in the 2007 Ulster Final against Tyrone eventhough they were meant to play in the blue and resulted in the Monaghan county board getting a hug fine.

I agree with some of the OP's points, but he has done some good for the county, just lacks the edge to bring them on to the next level.

With a few name changes, this would be a perfect template for Mickey Ned O'Sullivan :)

The fake injured players; there has been so many its hard to remember but Shane Duffy was out of the Ulster Final and lo and behold he plays. The fake fit players? Shane Duffy is then declared fit to play against Kildare, when a blind man could see that failing a trip to Lourdes he wasn't going to make it. He didn't! I'd say that really threw Kieran McGeeney having to plan for a change in Monaghan's goalkeeper, I'm sure that's why Johnny Doyle kicked so many wides!!!! And don't for a second think that McBennett wearing a White jersey wasn't deliberate. Like someone said the jersey thing was that we broke an agreement we had with Tyrone on 07 that we would wear blue to their red as both counties normally wear White. We broke this which led to a €5,000 fine and more importantly a pissed off Tyrone who despite being slow starters, scored 1-4 of their 1-15 total on the first 9 minutes.
Last week, we took the dressing room allocated to Tyrone, I'd say that showed them!
Do you know how many of these stunts have worked? The same number of Ulster titles we've won in the last 20 years! Or the same number of similar stunts that Mickey Harte has pulled in winning 3 All Irelands!
It's the culture of the cute hoor that thankfully has been shown to be redundant

As usual people mistake a colourful character with a good manager. Apart from run a Kerry side that hadn't played in 7 weeks close 3 years ago what else has he actually achieved? His record in Ulster isn't great yet every year before the season starts we're treated to the same old rubbish about Monaghan being one of the 'contenders' and there is 'something different about them this year'.

I actually don't mind Monaghan football and their supporters are good craic and very sporting (unlike another team from the north-east) but I find it very hard to cheer for them when this clown is in charge. Hopefully this is the end of him.

To Luke Dempsey, Mickey Moran, Tommy Carr and all the other muppets who have achieved nothing- don't even think about it. Jason Ryan, Joe Kernan, Pat O'Shea or Malachy O'Rourke would be possibilities.

If you're talking about Pat O'Shea former Kerry manager, I'd say forget about it completely.

Has a fairly young family and from what I know of him would have pretty much little to no interest in managing another inter-county team let alone Monaghan especially given the insane distance he'd have to be commuting.

Some very valid points there OP, didnt hear about the dressing room stunt last week but agree with you its childish and dont think you'd see Tyrone or Kerry at that sort of thing.

hope ye get big JOE as he is not worth the money from Galway's point of view compare and contrast him to John McIntyre a Tipp man but look at his reaction today after the game and he is just getting expenses

Reuniting Joe and Grimley would be the ideal scenario but I don't think we can afford him. Although he would understand the Monaghan player more readily than some other managers. As a previous poster said Pat O'Shea is a pipe dream and although I rate Jason Ryan very highly, geography will probably go against us there aswell. That leaves Malachy O'Rourke who took a very average Fermanagh side to an Ulster Final and in doing so has proved (like Ryan) that he can get big performances out of unlikely teams.
I think whoever comes in will be facing an uphill struggle. In my opinion, the more established Monaghan players should opt out if the league next year and concentrate on Ulster. Granted, Tyrone are a far better side but this years display will dampen down expectations and who knows except that the Paul Finlay's and Tommy Freeman's of this team need another slog of a league campaign like they need a hole in the head.

Sure isn't that why us Dubs call yee "Moanagain".

All Banty ever does is whinge, all the players ever do is whinge especially Clerkin and Tommy Freeman (the hard man that he is, someone will clean the wee diver out of it someday).

A shame that there are facts behind it:

Banty whinges as there was only 6 days between games in the qualifiers (guess what Séamus, you're not alone)

Clerkin whinges about kids entering the pitch at half time for a kick around / puck around in Parnell Park last year. FFS, he's a member of the Garda Síochána and shouldn't be intimidated by little Dubs with hurls and footballs).

Freeman is a diver (as witnessed by how easy he went down for 3 late frees in the NFl1 game at Parnell Park in 2009) and everytime he plays the big man he puffs out the chest as if to say "C'mon and take me on". Someday he will get his comeuppance!

I would agree totally with this post.I never liked Monaghan apart from the tests they gave Kerry in 2007 and 2008 but otherwise I have found them to be up there with the most cynical of teams with their blatant diving and whinging.Their physical stance in playing the player and not the ball has led to dangerous tackles and clumsy accidents. Get well soon Paul Griffin.

Banty can go on and on about how this team had its last hurrah this year but in all seriousness, the rebuilding process should have started in 2009 and a new manager appointed then. The Monaghan team in 2008 and 2009 were involved in dirtfests with Derry and this took a lot away from the championship.

Dick Clerkin is one of the biggest whingers in GAA.Hopefully we won't be seeing much of him anymore in a Monaghan jersey.I always put him on a par with Dennis Glennon in terms of whinging. The kids who have a kickabout in Parnell Park at half time are well behaved. In fact much moreso than Mr Freeman,Mr Clerkin and co.

That's a wee bit harsh in fairness, blackbelt.

The incident between Finlay and Griffin was a simple accident and could not be put down to any part of Monaghan's playing "style" (I use that word guardedly).

Maybe my idea of whinging differs from yours. In my book it's giving out about something that most people wouldn't care about.
So everyone agrees that the 6 day turn around is unfair so I don't think Banty is guilty on this point.
Secondly, Dick Clerkin is a chemical engineer. Is this one of your "facts"?
Lastly, Tommy does go to ground easily as does Colin Cooper and all good forwards. In the game in question Tommy bought 3 fouls because of the braindead defending by Dublin. The last free came from Tommy getting a ball and having no shooting opportunity so he took advantage of over zealous defending and dived knowing that a) the ref would welcome making it a draw and b) Paul would score it.
A lot of Dublin fans gave out (whinge would be another word) about this but it's how the top players behave and shows the naivety of Dublin about defence in the years before this one.

I agree with the OP and what is been said there. To me Monaghan are a team that dont have any heart. Should have beaten Kerry in 2007 and then in 2008 they didnt have the belief that they could beat them. A change of management is needed there now. Banty carried them so far but he hasnt got it when it comes to winning important matches.

So the plot thickens! The clubs rebelled at last nights County Board meeting. They voted 29 to 19 to seek nominations for the post of Senior County Manager. By my reckoning that was Banty's own club, Corduff and the executive voting for his appointment and EVERY other club in the county voting for other nominations. A slap in the face for Banty, hopefully he'll smell the coffee now and sod off to Laois, Cavan or whatever county has been taken in by his bull over the last 3 years.

Statement from the Banty this evening.

'Statement from Seamus McEnaney 17th Aug 2010

I thought long and hard about my own future as Monaghan team manager after our exit from the 2010 championship. I listened to people whose views matter to me. I listened in particular to the experienced players. For me the most important people in any football environment are the PLAYERS. I came to the conclusion that with a further 3 years we had every prospect of making further progress on the strides we had made over the last 6 years, considering where this team came from to now being one of the top teams in the country. Monaghan football is in a great place right now and what is most important is the future of Monaghan football and the continued progression of this group of players.
The decision of Monaghan GAA County Committee to now ask for nominations for the job that I have been privileged and honoured to hold can be interpreted in different ways. One perspective is that there are some who feel that I may not be the man to continue to lead this team.
Do I wish my name to go forward and perhaps be part of a “competition” for the post I have held for the last 6 years??
Well, that’s a prospect I will now have to think very carefully about.
There will be no further comment about this issue at this present time.'

Judging by that statement the man is obviously in the wrong job. With that ability to speak and yet say nothing of substance, he should be a politician! He could live in Corduff but claim expenses from his second home in Cloud Cuckoo Land!
The players are the most important?
Was Sean Gorman important? Because that's what hung him above all things last night!
Was Gary McQuaid important? Vice captain all year but when Vinny Corey was out for Ulster Final, Damien Freeman gets to lead the side! With no explanation given. Mainly because he doesn't have one.
Great day for Monaghan football yesterday, the clubs took back the power!

Monaghan fans should consider the position they were in before they lambost the banty.
Before he took over they were in the bottom 5-10 teams in the country.
He totally built the team to be within the top 6/7 teams in the country as they are now.
In my opinion, he is to be credited for his role. He achieved alot with a very limited panal.

What Banty done, was he got the team playing to their strenghts. If they went out and played traditional football, the likes of Kerry would have beat them by a point a man.
Banty put his unique brand on the team and devised a cunning game plan. However this game plan would earn him much critism in the nations medid and from many supporters and outsiders, as most of it was focused on defensive stratagies and a high work rate.

For the past couple of years especially in his reign (07 in particular) Banty and this team gave the Monaghan people many great days.

The only mistake Banty made, was staying too long in the job. If he had to have left after 07 or 08 he would be realished as one of the best managers of all time at that stage and arguebelly the best Monaghan ever had.

By staying on through 2009 and 2010, the team struggled with Banty. He made what I would deam huge mistakes this year. With team selection in peculiar. GoalkeeperGate was the low point of all his insane decisions over his time.

I though after this year, he would have left with a slight bit of Dignity in tact.
This wasn't the case however, not only did he look to stay on. He wished to stay on for 3 further years.
Rumour has it, he only wanted to stay for the money. With his personal businesses suffering in the recession, the Monaghan job was his only steady income.

The most shocken thing to emerge from this was the rumours going around regarding his pay. As it was only rumours I won't quote it. But the enormity of the figure shocked me.

I am not a Monaghan man, but I did fall in love with their "us against the world attitude" and liked what Banty done with a poor team.

Exactly what is your point here? You say we should remember where we were before Banty arrived. We do remember, Banty did an outstanding job in getting the pride back into Monaghan football but some people seem to think that is a good enough reason to keep him on.It isn't. its a sad fact of life that if you raise peoples expectations then they will be disappointed when you don't meet them. Monaghan fans only care about an Ulster Championship, the league is window dressing and is only important to those countys who are in the mess we were in 4-6 years ago. We have gone nowhere since 2007. You can draw Bantys career into 2 equal sections. 2005-2007 we made rapid progress due to a good manager but also to a very talented bunch of players. This is not a poor panEl. Tommy Freeman and Paul Finlay played for Ireland v Australia in recent years. 7 Monaghan players were on the Ulster All Star team in 2007 and 4 players were nominated for All Stars that year with Tommy getting one and Gary McQuaid being totally robbed. From 2008 to now, we have stagnated at best and probably gone backwards. We were probably fooled by having to face the worst Armagh team that ever pulled on an orange jersey and the fact that for once we did to Fermanagh what we should do to them. We are totally one dimensional tactically. He has NEVER made a significant tactical change in a match, save Vinny Corey to FF v Tyrone in 2007 and that was only made as Vinny was on a yellow card at Full Back. It was crying out for a change at halftime v Tyrone this year but neither he nor his expensive hired hands did anything. He then passes off the defeat as a poor 35 minutes. Shoving all the blame onto the players and absolving himself of any. Banty is never out of the papers. He's rentaquote at this stage and it got tiresome a while ago. His treatment of Sean Gorman was a complete disgrace, trying to justify it afterward he said he only does things in the interest of Monaghan football. If that is true he must resign. By the way, all the rumours you are hearing are true and I bet you don't know the half of it.

By the way, all the rumours you are hearing are true and I bet you don't know the half of it.

My point is essentially the same as what your saying.
He was great untill 07 from then on things have remained the same and now gone backwards. Think we could both agree on that one?

The other point I made, is that he had a very limited bunch of players. I don't know if you agree with me here. Where did your so called star players Finlay and Freeman go this year? Both were absent for the Ulster final and Kildare game. They weren't much better against Armagh or Fermanagh either.
To add to this point, the mid-field was a huge problem all year. As was goals, center back, the whole half forward line and argubally the whole full forward line.
What banty got going was very good, where the team was greater than the sum of the indivual parts.

In terms of rumours relating to pay. Both Banty and Grimley were getting the salary of top-bankers. They should be hung out to dry like Sean Fitzpartick and Co over this.
Instead of paying 2 men ridiculous wages, why not pay one decent man.
Get Micko in the hell. He would be cheaper than paying Banty, his large assistant and a bloated back-room team.

We will have to disagree about the strength of the panel. Neither Tommy or Paul played well against Tyrone or Kildare, but we were dead men walking against the Lily Whites, our season finished with the final whistle in Clones. (technically it finished at half time that day) Our season this year was Ulster or Bust so we were going to lose the following week no matter what. Monaghan have done the gutsy qualifier run and there's nothing for us there anymore. Tommy scored 1-4 v Armagh and 0-3 v Fermanagh. Paul scored 0-7 v Armagh and 0-6 v Fermanagh and was the leading scorer in the Ulster Championship. So I'll have to disagree on their performances in the earlier rounds.
The problem areas you highlighted: Midfield was good all year, the goalkeeping situation was totally of Bantys making as was the centre half as the man who should have been there was stuck in goal, half forward line was poor but the full forward line was on fire before the Ulster Final where I say once again, we were totally out throught tactically and our overpriced management either froze or didn't know what to do.
Grimely went to the highest bidder and we bought him. The last thing Monaghan need is Micko, this team have a lot of miles on the clock and need to be "minded" in the next year, they don't need to be doing 40 laps just because it was good enough for the Kerry boys.
I would like to hang Sean Fitzpatrick though:)

Is Grimley just a great no.2 though. Think that was the thinking when he was not given the Armagh job.

I'd say he's kicking himself now that he didn't stay on at Kildare with Geezer (although maybe Monaghan suited him better to be closer to home?).

A former Armagh senior and Crossmaglen player, that shall remain annonymous, informed me that there was an option for Grimley to return to the Kildare fold (Geezer was really keen to keep him) after he didn't get the Armagh job. But he declined as he was finding the distance an issue.
Personally I'd like to see him get a crack at the Monoghan job and given time to build a good team that can challenge in Ulster consistently.
Think there is an attitude of underachievement amongst Monoghan supporters, which does a small bit of disservice to what Banty achieved, given where Monoghan where when he took over.

You may have guessed from this thread that I'm not Banty's biggest fan but looking at the mess Mayo are in, they could do a lot worse than him. If you want someone to install a lot of passion and pride, he's ideal and to the outside observer these seem to be missing from Mayo at the minute. Alternatively just get Micko in to run the ****e out of them!!!

I think the cat could be out of the bag about Grimely. Kildare seem a far more potent attacking threat this year without him and although Monaghan played some great stuff against Armagh and Fermanagh they were tactically found wanting against Tyrone, and if you're paying the insane amounts we were to him you need more than one playbook and I don't think he has and that makes him over paid, over weight and over rated!!!

I predict that Magi will be yearning for the good old days under Banty by the time Eamonn McEnaney is finished with the Monaghan team.

Terrible, terrible move from the Monaghan board. By all means get rid of Banty if you plan to replace him with a proven manager who has the potential to push Monaghan on to the next level but to get rid of him in favour of a man who was very poor in his last management gig with Louth verges on insanity. Monaghan to be in Division 3 by 2012.
