Its not the speed that kills you, its the suddenly stopping that does

Speeding isn't dangerous.. Driving dangerously is dangerous.

It's not black and white like that; there should be a "both" option.

Stupidity causes accidents, speed escalates the severity of the crash.

Often go hand in hand tbh

Speed doesnt kill, its the misapplication of speed that kills.

You've got to accommodate for the fact that there are always going to awful drivers on the roads, and accidents are often out of your control.

Everybody thinks they're above average drivers, anyway.

Speed/Stupidity Doesn't Kill People, Rappers Do.

I saw it on a documentary on BBC 2.

Inappropriate speeding is a major part of the problem. If you were permitted, then doing 120-130kmh on a dual carriageway wouldn't be a danger, given the correct weather conditions. Doing that around the ring of Kerry would be stupid.

Earth is moving around the Sun at about 67,000 miles per hour a few extra mph in a car not going to make much of a differance

In addition to thinking they're better than the average driver, most people also believe they're blessed with "common sense," which often seems to nothing more than their arbitrary worldview.

Its the speeding because that is stupid, speeding kills you. Slow down folks, plan your journey and there's no need to be speeding, unless you want to take that chance to have an accident which is stupid

Speed is brilliant, as long as its done stealthily!

By speeding do you mean driving faster than a number written on a sign decided by someone years and years ago and then brainwashed into the majority of people as being some magic number below which is ok but above is some crazy warp speed,

or do you mean driving at a speed which is inappropriate for the conditions, the road, the comparabilities of your car etc?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 334 ✭✭Ollchailin

I'll tell ya what's stupidity- that poll. It's not as black and white as one or the other.

It's the stupidy at driving at an inappropriate speed that kills. Driving 120km/h on one road is sensible, but on another road is stupid- and even if it doesn't kill, is highly irresponsible & completely disregards anyone else using the same road as you.

    What movie is that from?

On topic, a new entry: arrogance. The belief that the speed limit does not apply to you because you're a better driver than everyone else. Until...

    Same with drunk driving.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

It's being stupid enough to think that you are so invincible that you can speed on busy and/or dangerous roads, possibly aided by alcohol that kills.

Speeding is dangerous in itself but the lack of common sense of some young drivers doesn't help.

The poll needs more options IMO.

This is the problem. Most people think they're better than the average driver, and most people think they possess good common sense. There has to be some form of restrictions put in place (whether the limits that have been imposed are reasonable is another topic for debate) or everyone would be flying around at whatever speed they feel like because they think they're personally capable of doing so, when in fact many of them are suffering from illusory superiority.
But I'm talking about the often quoted "speed kills" saying
It is a contributory factor in serious road-traffic accidents. You can't just tell people to stop being **** drivers; this is something that needs to be addressed at a licensing level.

Any idiot can release the pressure on the accelerator, though.

Chicken and Egg scenario here really. Driving with too much speed is a stupid thing to do.

From a physics perspective, You are less likely to have full control and will have less time to react to a problem if you are moving faster. That is undisputable fact. Therefore, if accidents and road deaths are caused by the driver losing control or not having enough time to react, then yes, they speed they were going at is a contributing factor.

It really annoys me having to listen to these Clarkson mouthpieces spouting off about how only good drivers should be allowed on the road and then we'd all be allowed do what ever speed we like. Its nonsense. The only reason people want to drive faster is because it feels awesome. Trying to pretend it is in anyway safer than obeying speed limits is absolute nonsense.

I'm actually in favour of zero tolerance when it comes to the roads. People wouldnt take stupid risks if it carried a 4 year sentence.

There is no doubt in my mind that speed kills and if stupidity prevents anyone from seeing it then perhaps they are stupid people driving fast who have yet to be caught.

Most accidents happen on rural roads not rated for speed

If it was up to me, there'd be no speed limits, cause a crash and you're fined a big sum of cash, cause a crash that kills someone and you're off the road for good

Obviousy by your latter example, going too fast for the conditions at the time is speeding, like not being able to stop in time and not being able to think ahead about the implications of how fast you are going in a certain situation

The speed on the signs are a load of bollix for a lot of the roads around ireland

That would not be enough of a deterrent because, as I keep saying, everyone thinks they're a great driver and car crashes aren't for them.

Excessive speeding IS stupidity. In my opinion, the fact that so many people here (and in the poll) disagree, shows that we have yet to learn proper respect for the dangers that can exist on our roads

no speed limits .. some dodgy roads then.. what would happen to young women driving cars with a loud baby trying to concentrate on the road................

I often do 140 on a 120 motorway when the conditions allow it, i don't see any stupidity in that at all
