Shop around if you get 3 refusals a company has to quote you under the law Skylines are hard to insure simply because there seen as a boy racer car another way is to just buy the car and transfer the insurance over from a Bravo want model Skyline are youu looking at is it Turbo

Have you tried on a 200sx?

 read the charter OP or even post a comment in the help and feedback thread.

In regards to your question. Skylines dont tend to be usually well driving by young people to powerful, back wheel drive, boy racer rep. Also insurance companies dont think highly of this comment "since im clearly a safe driver"<that would set alarm bells ringing to me of a driver why thinks their good(and therefor a little cocky) but is clearly in need of more experience before getting their hands on a skyline.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 Haynesey

im keeping the bravo though aswell its just a 2.5 litre non turbo a 200 sx jus aint the same as a skyline its the car i want and nothing could change my mind not even my girlfriend!:D

Do you actually know anything about cars? If the skyline is a boyracer car I'll eat a cowboy hat.

Skylines are hard to insure because they're in the highest insurance risk bracket. If you want a quote on it - Ring quinn, ask to speak to a manager. He'll quote you if you already have the car.

so he would only quote me if i have the car?

There are a lot of insurance companies who wont quote anyone of any age or experience on a car like a Skyline; I know when I was trying to get insurance on my Integra before I gave any information to the company I told them the car and most said no straight away.

As has been said you could try transfer the insurance from the Bravo to the Skyline as they have to allow you to do this, but that is not to say they wont charge you big money to make the change and then for your renewal. Same goes for them having to quote you after 3 refusals; nothing to stop them asking for €7k or something.

Find a broker in your area who deals with Setanta and try them. Also try Britton. If you can handle their terms and conditions then XS Direct are another company who will probably quote you, but you could (and probably will) end up with a €4k excess on the policy.

I sympathize with you tho; I was 26 with 8 years driving experience behind me before I even got a quote of any kind for an Integra Type R. You may just have to put that dream car on ice for a while!

A 200sx would be a much better buy than a 2.5 n/a straight six Skyline, you get the same power but in a car thats cheaper to tax and vastly more tunable!

Are the 2.5 nasps in the Slyline as powerful as the 200sx ? I'm surprised at that, I'd take the 200sx personally. Can you get insured on the 2.0 nasp skyline OP ?

I know a bit about them alright

Most Skylines I see have Loud exhausts dump valves bodykits lowered suspension therefore are seen as a boy racer car in the Eyes of the general public and Im not getting into this whole boy racer v modified car enthusiast debate

Ive seen pently of muppets drive them same with any high performance jap car

so its the general publics fault i cant get insured damn them all to hell!!

Not being a boy racer but having owned a lowered Celica with a noisy SS exhaust

    and a Prelude

    2008_0721Prelude_clean0002.jpg

    I would agree with

23 year olds with only 2 years NCB is hardly very experienced for a rwd sports car to be honest, surely you can appreciate that.

i can appreciate that how much experience do u need to drive a car 80mph? cause i wouldnt b speeding or doing it around corners!:D

You can lose a rwd at an awful lot less than 80mph ;)
How much are you paying to insure the Brava ?

Yeh they are both around 200 bhp, most 200sx's will have min mods that will have them putting out around 220 - 230bhp but a completely standard one is circa 200bhp.

Unfortunately Skylines have fallen into the hands of the boy racer brigade too, there is no denying that, especially R32's and R33's.

R34 GTR's though they are safe still :D

I drive an old BMW, 90 degree right turn every morning from a level road to an uphill road on a very quite stretch of road, in the wet anything over 20mph and away she goes unless your very gentle with the steering and throttle. It's onto a steep hill so the temptation is to sink the shoe. If I was 23 and driving two years I wouldn't be able to resist being quite honest.

i had a friend stopped in an old bmw 3 series for a 90 degree turn his excuse was he sneezed!:D

On a serious note, do what we all have to do and wait a few years, alternatively just pay whatever you're quoted?

What has the fact they were driving a skyline got to do with anything.

I get the point, you want special treatment because you're CLEARLY a safe driver.

    Point noted, point rejected.

At OP would you not consider the likes of a is200 or 318ci instead much easier to insure and more forgiving

To do with the cost of insurance.

OP, to answer your question, they took it for a test drive one night.

ring quinn and ask 2 get third party extension!!! my friend had a gtst skyline nd he got insured on a 1.5 almera and had third party extension (like open insurance) and it only cost 1600 but the skyline had to have tax and test and not registered in your name and if it has none of that then your not insured to drive it!!! and he was only 19!!! you mite be able to qualify for open insurance!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

What you describe is not open driving, its being allowed to drive other cars with third party cover. Open insurance means that anyone can drive the car you have insured regardless of who they are.

The trick you describe might and probably will work, but its also entirely possible that the insurer will put some conditions on the other car meaning that a car like a Skyline will not be covered. It also means you are paying two lots of tax and NCT. And lets not forget its against the rules so if you get caught doing it, no matter how slim a chance there might be of that happening, you could end up uninsured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭mantua

it works because one of my friends got pulled by the cops and they said that the skyline had to be insured but he rang quinn legal advisor on the spot and put him the cops and they told the cops that he is insured!!!!so it does work and thats only a couple of months ago and he not the only guy i know who's doing this!!!

If the car is stolen, damaged, set on fire, broken into though you have absolutely no cover.

Oh dear. So he "had" a skyline, but he registered it in someone elses name? Do you not think the insurance company will find out about this should he make a serious claim?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 17,861 Mod ✭✭✭✭Henry Ford III

I agree. In the event of a 3rd party claim where a 19 y.o. was driving a Skyline or similar on a 3rd party extension, the insurer would investigate.

    It's extremely dodgy ground.

Any excuse not to insure you and they'll hang you out to dry. I wouldn't risk it as any insurance court case could count you out for life or being severely loaded.
