Sorry, I forget that we were talking on a p/m basis for electricity,
ESB bills are every two months, so it's €85 p/m.

Is there not a daily standing charge for the gas connection even if you don't use it?

yeah, this is of course. but they actually owe me back money for over estimating so it cancels out more or less for the last 2-3 months :)

is that total or divided up amongst the residents already?

That's total, just me in there.

Actually I forgot to say that heating is not included in that. In Germany you have what's called kaltmiete (cold rent) and warmmiete (warm rent). Cold rent is the rental price and the warm rent includes heating, building maintenance, garbage and cable with the rent.

I don't know what my cold rent is, but warm rent is 800 per month, apt is around 67 sq meters. At the end of the year you either pay extra or get money backed based on what heating you have used.

I ditched the phone line and didn't bother with UPC either:

    I got a Linksys PAP2 and use http://www.justvoip.com

1 Euro does you for landline calls for 6 months and mobiles are very reasonable. Plugs into your broadband and you plug your phone into that and thats Landlines to pretty much all over the world + mobiles in the US/Canada.

20 euros does me for about 3 months with fairly frequent usage, plus each time you top up you get more free days ! :), i have 340 free days at the moment, use the credit ringing mobiles only really, bonus is you can ring country only numbers on it too, so like 1890 numbers when your outside Ireland.

Also on the TV thing, just stuck up a dish and recieve freesat ;)
    http://www.freesat.co.uk/

Setup the dish myself, took a total of 2 hours, 5 beers and some patience.

I was paying 560 / month for a two room in Duesseldorf, but was hardly there so my Electricity was 90 euros for 7 months ! :)

    Heating was included as well.

    Interesting exercise!

My two-bedroom flat in Madrid averages out at:

    Gas: €17
    Electricity: €24
    Water: €14
    DSL/Tel (No TV).: €45
Annual council tax (no monthly rates): 340

Think it's also worth mentioning that we get our rubbish collected 6 days a week (7 in the summer) and the council collects all unwanted furniture on the first Tuesday of every month...

This is great. It could really shave off some money from my monthly bill.

Forgot to mention you can get a landline number with them aswell for 1 euro per year, I have a Dutch one at the moment. Think the Irish one is the same.

Great features on it though, kicks the pants off skype as you can use your normal landline phone at home, also you can set it up on your Nokia Series 60 phone (E71, E72, N90 etc) so you can use it off free wifi when abroad and also register a foreign mobile number with local dial in, so if in ireland i register my Irish mobile number, dial the justvoip number and then dial anywhere abroad for the price of a call to Dublin ;)

Justvoip is a reseller for a German company called betamax, I find them fine but if you want to find the VERY best and cheapest deal theres a comparison site:

im just about to move into a one bed on the navan road northside dublin, this is giving me an indication of what it will cost me on utilities...

i wanted something south facing as the sun heats the rooms so you spend less on heating (didnt get it unfortunately) but did get a second floor apartment which has better insulation than a ground floor...

looking to find out the cheapest tv package i can get... probably saorview ?

Electricity @ 63 euro per quater in Hamburg
Electricity @ 72 euro per quater in Madrid

    Gas @ 33 per quater in Hamburg ( !!!! )
Gas @ 51 per quater in Madrid

What ever about voip ( i use blueface myself - 25 euro per month - irish company, and i get a geographic no. - i.e your local prefix, or and out of area prefix, i choose dublin no. + a voip no. 0766, + a fax no. - fax to email, + 5 euro worth of credit incase i do ring a mobile or some no. with charges, the line comes with free uk and Ireland landline calls, unlimited, no time limit like eircom etc.)
One thing is pretty clear from a quick read of this thread, we are getting fleeced here in the republic of Ireland, on a grand scale.
    << shakes head >>>
I asked my daughter the other day how she was getting on with the 48 go conqour contract - 10 euro a month unlimited calls any networks / unlimited texts and some data, she said no difference to the meteor really.
I pay 37 for the same with emobile, and i'm quite happy with the service - Its a pity i can't turn back time and become 18 again ! (terms & conditions may apply )
