Walk on water?! You were 18 feet below sea-level.
But seriously, that's just showing off. We don't want to know where you were on your holidays. :)

Just an idea on how it records a track race

Don't think i ran in lane 8 during the race :)

Garmin are a great guide and training aid but stop watch and jones counter for races :)

By the way, when GPS came out first, it was restricted by the military so only they had the most accurate measurements, but that hasn't been the case for over ten years. High end surveying equipment based on GPS can be accurate down to centimetres.

Over the years, the difference between military and civilian GPS has lessened. Most importantly, selective availability was discontinued in 2000. But they're still not the same. Civilian recievers use the standard positioning system, whereas the army have access to the precise positioning system which is better able to compensate for atmospheric interference. Or at least that's what I read.

The slower you move around a track the more sample points there will be, less overshoot, hence a higher accuracy.

Well in that case, then, my Garmin will be 100% accurate when I do track sessions! :(

For an accurately measured course you need to invest in a Condo131

until the condo131 becomes a commercially available measurement device ;)).
Will that be cheaper / lighter than a 305?:D

...rumoured to be dirt cheap ....what context...dunno

Current model is a bit dated and about a stone heavier than when at its best!

I'll see if I can borrow Mrs Garmin's watch this evening for my 15 mile run. It's identical to mine in all but colour (though I should check the bios/gps versions). We may end up running at the same time though, so I'll have to try my experiment some other time.
Wore my own and my OH's 405 for a run this evening (opposite wrists) but otherwise, no difference, for a medium long run. Over the entire 2 hour run, there was an 80m discrepancy in distance, which is around 0.3% (16.55 Vs 16.6). Closer than I expected. Two identical watches worn on exactly the same run, both with the exact same software.

I ran in the Clonmel 1/2 marathon today as part of my training program for Berlin so my Garmin (can I use that as a noun?) had it as a scheduled workout. Was happy enough for most of the race as my average pace was what I was after. But then I got a bit despondent when I realised that the Garmin was telling me I only had a few hundred meters to go whereas I knew I was somewhere between the mile 2 & mile 1 markers

To cut the story short after I finished, heard from others that the race was mistakenly sent on two circuits of the town centre rather than one so we actually ended up running ~14.3 miles! A friend of mine was waiting for me at the finish line & told me that several of the top 10 looked disgusted as they checked their watches crossing the line, probably wondering where they had dropped 6/7 mins.

Slightly disappointed as this was my first ever 1/2 so figured no matter what I was guaranteed a PB but it doesn't feel quite right now. Of course I will have a PB for the more uncommon race distance of 14.3 miles!

For anyone interested, the first 13.1 miles of the inaugural Clonmel 1/2 marathon is here :)

This is a total disgrace,i was considering doing this...thank god i didnt.
Shows the inexperience of race organisers....absolutely no excuse.
    I would be livid

Yeah just spotted that! Guess it was doing two laps of the town at the start sent me over the edge :)
