Been years since i first played it on my playstation, the original 4 cd box..
I've searched online and even square's website, but nobody seems to sell it at all.. only second hand dodgy copies.

Does anywere actually stock it on any format, i remember it was on the PC for a while too, albeit fairly rare.
Anything i can do to get get a copy thats not second hand, and not costing me more than 50 quid?

Oxfam shops. I bought one there not so long ago. And have seen one or two copies in them over the past year or so

Edit: sorry, i seen you were lookin for a new one

yeah, am quite suprised i cant find a new copy, or "whitelabel" release of it, i remember a mate of mine bought the platinum one for 20quid about 10 years ago for the psone.

surely there must be some way of legally buying the game without spending a fortune on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,128 ✭✭✭thorbarry

Yea, I suppose they publish a certain amount over the years and then stop. Great game, much better than the recent final fantasies which have been pretty poor

Good luck finding one new. The game has been out of print for over a decadeand the PC release is quite rare compared to the PS1 game.

so i noticed, there's nowere that sells it digitaly (legally i mean)?
seems like there should be, apparently i'm not teh only one looking for it as its being sold on ebay and various other places second hand in seriously crazy prices, seen one for 500 quid sterling.. i'm sad but not that sad lol

You can buy the download on the PS3 & PSP, saw a pile of the game new in Japan but don't think they re-released it anywhere else. I don't think you'll find anything apart from used copies in Ireland, without the PSN download you'll have to use an emulator.

not sure how the ps3 and buying stuff from it works, how much did it cost, and i guess its about 3-4gig yeah?

It's €10 and is about 2gig, have FFVIII from PSN and it's just shy of 2 gig.

I only have the stupid 3 disk platinum version...

You need free PSN id that you sign up for, then use a credit card to add money to you PSN wallet or buy a € card in a shop for €20 or €50 of credit for the wallet. All the FF games are there for €9.99 each and 1700 MB for FF7.

some people are selling them for 500 sterling.. dunno what kind of price you'd get for it, but its pretty much golddust if its mint condition Melion, worth a lot more than you bought it for anyway.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10,259 ✭✭✭✭Melion

I paid €6.99 for it when i was working in GameStop :D

It came in pre-owned, absolutely perfect. Not a single scratch on any of the cd's and id say the manual was never even opened.

I have all the games, the PS1 are platinum but still won't be selling them till i can get more than £500. When i can buy a house i'll think of it.

Nobody will buy FFVII for 500 quid. It usually goes for 40-50 euro which is still a stupid price for the game. The game is the second best selling game on the PS1 ever with almost 10 million copies sold. You can usually pick up as new copies from second hand stores or other places if you look around for 5-15 euros. Other than that it's going cheap on PSN. I'd recommend the US version which is full screen and full speed.

You'll have to find some one pretty stupid to pay 50 euros let alone 500.

So what if I am, what's that got to do with this thread? All I've mentioned is about the price of the game. Just trying to help to not spend stupid money on the game.

I found a copy for €7 last year, so just keep looking, its the black label edition too and in perfect condition. Got it in Blackrock market. There's so many copies of it, you're bound to find one in a charity shop or car boot sale at some point.

Not really, you'll get 20 or 30e on averts.ie...maybe a little more ebay. The ones going for 500e are just chancing their arm, they wont get it.

The original release, black label of FFVII in mint condition (no tears, marks or discoloration) is worth a small fortune on ebay...assuming you put up lots of hi-res photos of actual item.

Amazon has gotten very good for vintage game sellers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Around how much is this small fortune for the black label? The copy I have is mint, just as you described... I'd be tempted to sell if and just replace it with the platinum edition if I got a decent amount for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭Aurongroove

you can download Final Fantasies 7, 8 and 9 on the Playstation network and play them on your PS3. they're about a tenner each

if you already have a PS3 it's great, I'm currently half way through FF8, and i plan on tackling FF9 next.

Just checked for you there and they all seem to have dropped in price, guess people dont have the money these days. Last i checked black label in mint was goin between 80e and 120e at least. If its actually in Mint id try even now for 80e, just make sure you use hi-res pics of everything close-up.

Whats the FMV quality and loading times like? The PC port FMV quality was awful, couldnt see anything in some of them.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

On the PS1 versions the quality gets much better as the games go on. FFVII is weird, some cutscenes look good but others have a lot of artificing. The movies were made piecemeal over 4 years by different companies so vary wildly in quality. FFVIII there's noticeable artificing but the video quality is much improved over the previous game. FFIX uses some phenomenally good compression and the video quality is the best I've seen in a 32-bit game. However all the videos are going to suffer on a HD screen and the 2D backdrops will be blocky. You'll just have to live with it.

I've only played VIII so far, but the loading times and FMV's are compleatly fine.

Ironically, every copy of FFVIII I've ever had had faulty FMV, and I've never seen the ending all the way through, but I now can with my PSN version.

make sure you set up a memory card before you begin (it's just a few button clicks, to tell your PS3 to set aside a few kb to act as memory card for the virtual PS1).

You can also play the game on PSP, or, via Remote play which can be great if some ****er is taking up the TV.

Cheers for checking, sounds like it might be a serious collectors item in years to come if its commanding that already. Think I'll hang onto it for a few more years and let it become even rarer. Although from €7 to €80 would be a pretty nice profit...

I doubt it. If you look at things like vinyl records, tapes etc, or even older video games, sonic the hedgehog etc

no one wants those old cartridges if you can get digital copies of the game. the Physical copy of FFVII will probably quickly be forgotten about with the on set of digital copies on PSN, and pirates Rom copies aswell.

Not true at all...real collectors will always want the item in its original release format in mint condition and willing to pay big money!

Not if it's as common as muck like FFVII.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭Aurongroove

    meh.. original release format?

I think only if it really is mint condition and only then perhaps after like 60-100 years.

what you need to factor in, is how important digital information is effecting media. will anyone ever pay good money for an original music cassette of songs easily bought on itunes?

not unless it's seriously old and seriously rare, and even then, who really cares?

the first thing you learn about antiques, if daytime TV has taught us anything, is antiques, except for a very small, extremely rare extremely few examples, sell for disappointing amounts of money.
19th century vases for 60 - 80 euros, letters written by historical figures for 25 quid.

it's useless. you might see the equivalent of 100 euros for FFVII in like, 80 years. If even that.

common as muck maybe, but incredibly hard to pick up for less than 100€ outside of PSN.

anyone could easily get a non-legit copy, however trying to get a legitimate copy which isnt damaged or in bad nick is really tough going, especially for the pc lol
there are as i said earlier, some people selling their copies for up to 500£.

Pretty optomistic pricing but who's to say there isnt someone out there that would pay that much considering the difficulty in getting it anywere else since its been out of 'print'

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

As I said before it's not actually very difficult to find. Go to car boot sales, raid second hand shops or look on buy and sell or adverts.ie and you'll eventually come across one in great condition for a tenner or less. If you are going to buy it for over 15 euros well what's the saying again, a fool and his money...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭carbonkid

Alot of people where fools with their cash during the economic doom years...im with degrassinoel on that FFVII in original release mint condition, as in 'as new' (sellers can have a very different idea of what mint is), people are asking for about 100e and sometimes even more.

Most people rarely took any care of their games during the ps1 days...we were too used to leaving cartridges on the floor.

Well if you think it's worth it then go for it. You just have to have a little bit of patience and you can get things for reasonable prices. I picked up Panzer Dragoon Saga with 3 other games for 25 euros and just today got Devil Summoner 2 for 30 euros when it goes for 50-80 euros. FFVII is the second best selling PS1 game of all time, do you really think there's not that many copies in good condition in the wild?

LOL...i picked up a second hand platinum copy ages ago for about 20e i think. Plan on passing it onto a mate later this week ^_^

Where do you normally pick up your older games?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Anywhere really. Adverts.ie, buy and sell, ebay, car boot sales, raiding second hand stores. I know some people on the arcade and retro forum have even done some skip diving and found perfectly good consoles at dumps.

i may have done things like that in my youth, but it would look a bit whacky if a middleaged guy was rooting around in a dump or someones skip for a playstation game lol

besides that, isnt it a bit cheeky to be rummaging through someone elses skip?

sorry dude, the secondhand store would be a good idea, but again, when something is on your wishlist to play, and you dont have patience enough to drag yourself across town and back again for a game you can download for a tenner (if ye have a ps3) and wind up getting a fairly okay deal, then it turns out one of the 4 cd's isnt working.. which could quite easily happen with or without scratches.
(offtopic - i bought fallout2 a few years back, for the pc in game on dawson street, brand new at the time '97 or something, when i got home to install it, it was a blank disk with the fallout2 logo on it, returned for new case np)
Another time, more recently i got company of heroes gold edition, disks were fine but there was no serial code lol..

see where i'm going with this? my luck isnt great when it comes to gaming lol

Anyhow.. its probably time i bought a ps3, cheers for the help all :)

I've nothing against getting it from PSN but if you are a collector looking for it then it's the best way to go. As for skip diving, I wouldn't do it myself but there's no law against it. Anything you throw out is fair game. As for scratched discs you can also send them into a game store to get them resurfaced or if you have patience do the toothpaste trick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,761 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

    lol whats the toothpaste trick?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Basically using toothpaste as a polish, only works with light scratches and takes a lot of applications. You can also use sandpaper, working from a coarse grain polishing down to a very fine grain. It's basically how other companies resurface CDs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,761 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

might try the toothpaste one lol, wouldnt trust myself with sandpaper on cd/dvds

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's basically the same thing, toothepaste is a mild abrasive. Look up videos on youtube to do it right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 175 ✭✭conbob

might pop into town to try find a copy of final fantasy 7. what second hand shops would you recommend. game, gamespot, extravision etc?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Don't bother, you won't find one. Any second hand game shops that sell games have been raided for decent PS1 games years ago. Some other second hand shops that don't specialise games might have it but you have to know where they are and be prepared to go diving around the backs of the shops.
