Mercury Poisoning From Fillings?

When I first heard about this I thought it felt a bit conspiracy theory and brushed it off. Recently a friend of mine went for some heavy metal poisoning tests, it looks like his levels are above normal. I'm not asking for advice, he'll talk to his doctor.
But it has got me thinking about amalgam fillings again. Is there something to it? YouTube has some scary looking videos showing gas being released from fillings.

I've found some bits and pieces that look like removing fillings would be a good idea... Or at least removing them before becoming pregnant?

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19105536

Googling it shows an awful lot of "alternative medicine" sites pointing out mercury is poisonous, which is nearly enough to assume it must be bull. I trust my dentist. But is there a real debate there?

If they might be dangerous, removing them seems better safe than sorry.

    Opinions?

A friend of my mums had to get 9 fillings removed and replaced because of mercury. It could be down to just having lots of fillings that are amalgam.

    No they can't.

Sorry I didn't realize it had been done to death. I searched for mercury and it didn't come up with any threads so I posted this. I'll search for amalgam.

Why not put it in the charter if it isn't up for discussion? Or a read these threads before posting? etc.

That's why the Catholic Church frowned on cremation in the past. (not anymore , now that we have composite....)

Would they not be concerned of turning all the alter boys into girls with the oestrogen in the composite....:D

A lad I work with had his fillings replaced by a 'biodentist' and lost 5% bodyfat quite soon after with no changes to his diet and training.

Just for added info - we both work in a gym, so test our body fat every two weeks. He trains hard and eats right yet could not come up with another reason for his good reduction in body fat.

Read this and learn some scientific philosophy:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hoc_ergo_propter_hocThen get some studies to back up what you think about amalgam fillings. Then come back and I will have 4 or 5 times the amount of evidence than you to say that amalgam is safe.

    See you soon.

    Hi Fitzgeme,

Please, please don't close the thread this time. The last time this came up I nearly bust my bonded retainer with laughter. I was thinking of claiming some cpd credits after reading the biological dentists website. Let this one run.:)

I will leave it open...unless it get really bad.

Serious question here then, if a toxicologist tells you you have mercury poisoning and that the first thing you need to do is get your fillings removed.

Is he definitely lying/a quack or can people be sensitive enough to mercury for fillings to cause a problem? Getting a second opinion from another toxicologist would be very expensive...

I'm gonna let the enthusiastic ones quote the studies over and back, but here's a simple fact:
More mercury is released during their removal than that which may leach out over their lifespan. How well aware are any of us of the potential in composites??
I think i'd be more worried about the ****e in our drinking water and the air we breathe etc....... Complete non issue me thinks!
To all non-dentists (lucky fcukers) I'm a dentist. I needed a filling there 2 years ago and both my colleague and I decided on the amalgam. Its longevity appeals most to me. I agree it looks ****e, but you should see some of the horror composites I come across, especially the eastern european ones. They're a nightmare to rescue.
If anyone thinks people look down on you coz of em yer nutz!!Fair enough if you're rosanna davison, but for most of the rest of us we'd be better off eating better and exercising more if we wish to improve our appearance. Hope i'm sufficiently off topic for y'all:D

I inform him/her that your dentist has told you more mercury is released during their removal than that which may leach out over their lifespan and see if they still recommend removing them.

Amalgams components like any metal (particularly nickle {cheap jewellery}) can cause a sensitivity in a very small percentage of the population. This is generally localised to the area of gum that is in contact with the metal. Whether it warrents changing the filling is something you shoulddiscuss with your dentist. If you do gold is the only fully biocompatible material dentists can use. Bit expensive though

Just curious about what are dentist's thoughts on posterior composites?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭digzy

When done well they're top class. There's a few clowns who just lob them anywhere. Amalgam is fairly foolproof esp where there's an issue with moisture control. Comps take longer too.
Anecdotally, I see much more faulty comps than amalgams, esp those eastern european horrors!

I am a big fan of taking an impression of the cavity and doing the composite indirectly, seperating the model and building up the bulk of the composite and contacts in the lab, then luting the sandblasted and sialinated "inlay" it in with relyx. I bet you I can do it faster than a cerec machine.

I milled an modp cerec inlay/onlay in 8 minutes yesterday. Total chair time 1 hour 10 minutes. Beat that Fitz. :D

On another note, I had a patient yesterday who was told by her chiropractor to have her amalgams replaced. I don't go around telling people what to do with their backs. What makes this quackopractor think he/she has the right to comment on the mouth of one of my patients?

hilarious, imagine someone, in the greatest area of quackology feel they have the authority to instruct people on their dental situation, they're almost as nuts as the people who give them money and actually listen to them...tut tut.

osteopaths are pretty bad at this too. three pretty good friends of mine are osteopaths and i asked them where they got these notions. turns out it's just one fool and their ideas, they they're never taught anything along the lines of dental opinions. like a biodentist i'd imagine!

ps, i'd highly recommend a good osteopath for the oul wear and tear on the back and shoulders.

mercury fillings are lethal for some people-they nearly killed me and I know loads of people in similar situation.
They give off mercury vapor all the time and it is one of the most powerful neurotoxins known to man. Sweden banned them in year 2000!!
most dentists in ireland and u.k. will still tell you they are safe.
If you have amalgam fillings you should get your breath tested for mercury before you go mad (mad- hatters disease)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,535 ✭✭✭btkm8unsl0w5r4

Nope your madness was caused by something else, please don't necropost....closed
