If its anything like the UK, we'll be getting carrier-locked and sim-free same bat-time, same bat-station.

The Irish Apple store has had the statement that iPhones sold by Apple directly are SIM free for awhile now:
When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it SIM-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.

Your guess is as good as mine! as apple don't really have an official Apple store (someone correct me if i'm wrong!) i wonder will be be able to preorder from their certified sellers. I see that o2 are doing 'first come first serve' so who knows what apple themselves will do.
    Maybe preorder for delivery??
If the white doesn't come out at the same time, i'll still wait. Been waiting this long, what's a few more weeks!?!?

I was only in Compu B (Official Apple Reseller) in Limerick the other day and they thought it was only going to be available locked to networks. She said apple tell them nothing and are very tight lipped about everything. Came as news to them that the 8gb 3GS was even available sim free from apple.ie. Really hope i catch the pre-order when it becomes available. Surely it will be put up soon to give them the best chance to see what kind of demand there will be in Ireland.

Doesn't sound a reliable 'source' to me.

Come on CompuB, at least make sure your staff are giving informed advice. Great work on the new stores (I've visited Cork/Dublin so far) and they both look fantastic but you have to make sure your staff know what they're talking about.

hmmmm. I've one preordered in the belfast store. If I preorder through the irish store will it be delivered or would I have to collect it somewhere(as there's no physical irish apple store)?

Also whats the story with micro sims??? If its been release in Ireland on 30th then will o2 have micro sims available?

I know what you're saying SolarNexus, but in my experience (YMMV) CompuB have been OK so far, but they really must be sure their retail staff are up there with the 'fanboys', they just have to know more about the product than the customers.

Thats the theory, in my experience retail staff usually fall way short of the customers in knowledge of their own products. With possible exception to Maplins' electronic boffins, who are few and far between too.

Just my experience, though I've never shopped at CompuB so I cant say what they're like.

So frustrated..... waiting 2 years for the new iPhone and they release it on a day when i'll be out on the country.

O2 is selling it first come first served. There is no pre-orders for O2. Confirmed to me by several O2 Dublin stores since 7pm.

Anybody know how they will get iPhones to you ordered sim free on apple.ie?

What does everyone think about Irish stock levels? (i know pure speculation) With the bad press i'm hoping I can still get one from a O2 shop on Tuesday 3rd August.

I imagine they will take upgrade preorders for existing billpay customers.

Delivered to your door, like everything else they sell.

30th July is a Friday, you haven't a hope of getting one 4 working days later - O2 & VF stores are open presumably for the Saturday, Sunday & Monday

Excellent! May not have to take a trip up to belfast so to pick up an iphone if there launching on 30th here. I would assume that apple.ie store would have them for ordering on the same date?

Ya i usually find them ok. She said their boss had told them as far as he knew they where locked. She also said Compu B will be dealing with 3 and Vodafone from now on so its through them you'd be tied to those networks. I think she is just trying to keep all the iphones to herself ha

Thanks for the response, but O2 aren't taking pre-orders for anybody. I'm on a O2 upgrade bill pay. It's first come first served for everybody.

That's a disgrace. ya should just be able to get a swap. When you get your phone and pay nothing for a sim.

I dont recall anyone saying you cant get a swap?

Maybe not yet, but when its released here, I cant see why not.

I thought the O2 guys confirmed that a free swap was possible, though I'm not sure what the story is with prepay customers - don't they always have to pay for a new SIM?

Carphone Warehouse in Carrickmines yesterday didn't even know Apple had announced launch in Ireland on 30th July.

Think we'll be waiting until after to see it in the shops! :(

As regards to iphone 4 release date. The apple press conference was held after close of business by all the operators head office working hours. It didn't start till 6pm GMT. Chances are we'll hear something official this week.

The micro sims are available (on o2 anyway). I was pondering getting a sim free iphone 4 from the north and found out before hand from an o2 store that they had micro sims available for o2 customers that purchard an iphone 4 sim free up the north so that they could use their existing number in the phone and that it was free.

Only thing i'm unsure of is how do we avail of the free cover/bumper.

One more thing :D I did over hear staff saying that stocks iphone 4 may be hitting stores next weekend and that maybe the 30th was a date that Apple would have release in the extra countries by - cold be total bull or a case of chinese whispers, so pinch of salt eh?

i think you contact apple for the bumpers via the website, but dont quote me on that

It doesn't. It just says purchasers will be entitled to a free bumper thingy. I'd imagine you'd still have to apply for one. Apparently, they don't have enough of them to go around anyway and you'll be given a choice of case/bumper.

yeah Jobs said you go on their website and I imagine be asked for your IMEI or serial number and bang they send you off one. If you can order an engraved iPod from Apple.ie surely it can cope with giving out free bumpers. I think Apple in this regard are going beyond what is neccessary to keep customers smiling. Notice how Jobs never said "customers", its always "users". ANY other manufacturer would have just said, if you're not happy bring it back for refund, consumer rights, blah blah blah.

I know you'll all hate me but i'm hoping the Irish release gets delayed until the following week! I'll be in Scotland for the whole weekend so would have to wait weeks for stocks to replenish!

Give the networks a chance to update, guys! It was announced about 7pm on Friday evening. Most offices work Monday to Friday!

I have mine sorted anyway so yay! Plus I've a backup one too! :)

half of one percent of 3million iphones owners have reported a reception issue and dropped calls are one more per 100 compared to the 3gs on at&t and thats the worst network in the world.

i will be having one and i have still to see any irish people moan about the ones they bought in belfast.

If numbers are as tight as they are saying, it may be that we won't see anything at all on their websites and instead they will just use their 'register interest' email to distribute the supply.

Hmmmm. CompuB said last week definately by the end of the month. Its really hard to know. It would be nice to get some kind of statement from apple in Ireland. Whether it be an exact release date or to even say not by the 30th of July......something anyway. I know if i go to the hassle of getting one from the uk or the us or wherever, a few days later it'll be released in Ireland.

They probably just said that to encourage you to buy a 3GS or something else off them now. I wouldn't believe anything Carphone Warehouse told me. I bought my 3GS from them and the amount of bullsh*t I had to listen to was unbelievable. Never again. I doubt they know anything about when the iPhone 4 is out anyway.

They told me you can't get a micro sim till the end of the month.Went to an o2 shop straight after and got 1 straight away.
    They haven't got a clue
